12 best acoustic strings
Acoustic guitar strings are a crucial component of an acoustic guitar, as they directly impact the instrument's tone, playability, and overall sound quality. Here's what you need to know about acoustic guitar strings:
String Materials:
- Acoustic guitar strings are typically made from various materials, with the most common being:
- Phosphor Bronze: These strings are known for their warm and balanced tone. They are a popular choice for many acoustic guitar players.
- 80/20 Bronze: These strings provide a brighter and crisper sound compared to phosphor bronze strings.
- Silk and Steel: These strings have a softer, mellow tone and are easier on the fingers. They are often preferred by fingerstyle players.
- Nylon: Nylon strings are used on classical guitars and produce a soft, mellow sound.
- Acoustic guitar strings are typically made from various materials, with the most common being:
String Gauges:
- Acoustic guitar strings come in various gauges or thicknesses. Common gauges include light, medium, and heavy. Lighter gauge strings are easier to play but may sacrifice some volume and projection, while heavier gauges can provide more volume and a fuller sound but can be harder on the fingers.
Coated vs. Uncoated Strings:
- Some acoustic guitar strings come with a protective coating that can extend their lifespan by preventing corrosion and dirt buildup. Coated strings often retain their brightness and tone for a longer time.
String Winding:
- The winding of the lower strings (usually the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings) can vary. Common winding styles include roundwound, flatwound, and half-round. Each type produces a slightly different tone and feel.
Tone and Sound:
- The choice of strings significantly affects the tone of your acoustic guitar. Phosphor bronze strings, for example, offer a warm and balanced tone, while 80/20 bronze strings produce a brighter and more pronounced high end.
Playability:
- The gauge and tension of your strings can impact the playability of your guitar. Lighter gauge strings are generally easier on the fingers and require less finger strength to press down on the frets.
String Changing Frequency:
- How often you need to change your acoustic guitar strings depends on factors such as how frequently you play, your playing style, and the type of strings you use. Over time, strings can lose their brightness and may start to sound dull.
String Brands:
- There are numerous string manufacturers, each offering a range of strings with different characteristics. Popular brands include D'Addario, Elixir, Ernie Ball, Martin, and more. Experimenting with different brands and types can help you find the strings that best suit your playing style and preferences.
String Maintenance:
- Proper maintenance, such as cleaning your strings after playing and storing your guitar in a suitable environment, can help prolong the life of your strings.
In conclusion, selecting the right acoustic guitar strings is essential for achieving the desired sound and playability of your instrument. It's worth trying different string materials, gauges, and brands to find the combination that suits your playing style and musical preferences.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come in some sort of holder? What material |
Answer: | No, the adapter costs extra. I can’t remember how much however. |
Question: | Do the bridge pins fit a yamaha acoustic guitar? I read something about the pins being to skinny |
Answer: | Plug for 9 volt adapter is on right side of pedal next to input. |
Question: | I have an electric acoustic Yamaha will the strings work |
Answer: | Probably not the sustain your looking for. In that price range you would probably like the pigtronix bass compressor better. |
Question: | Will this work for everyone |
Answer: | The pedal Nerd in me: Depends on your finger attack. Of course when playing with active pickups you get a hotter signal so you would see more indicators for compression. I played an Fender American Elite P-Bass and when switching between the two (passive/active) there was a significant difference in signal compression requirements which is reflected by the indicators. The musician in me: If it sounds good ROCK IT who care about lights |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the guitar tuner accurate |
Answer: | They should work with most guitars. My guess is they will be way too long, but can be cut down. Make sure you do it after stringing and cut both wires on the wound strings so they don't unravel.I had to cut off about 8 inches on my acoustic Seagull. |
Question: | Do these guitar strings are long enough for 38" acoustic guitar |
Answer: | I have a 45 year old Martin d-28 I use the extra light strings EJ 15 3 Dbecause I like to fingerpickthey have a very good warm soundif your guitar is fairly new try the light gauge strings they sound very good too and you can buy 3 packs for under $15 at Amazon. D'Addario makes a good string and I find they last a long time. I highly recommend! |
Question: | The 3 in 1 guitar picks look nice. Is the sound clearer when sweeping the guitar strings? Will it break easily |
Answer: | When you put on a string, you have to allow enough slack for the string to coil around the tuner post. Feed the string through and leave enough slack so you can pull the string about 4 inches above the fret board and then slowly wind it up and as it tightens, pause once in a while let the string stretch. Some strings can take a day to stretch, some don't. Be patient. Good luck...but if you don't leave slack for coiling strings will break. |
Question: | What size is the thumb pick |
Answer: | Yes, this is a full set.Specifically this is a set of 3. If you want just one select the 1 pack. (I tried to include a link but Amazon defaults it to the 3 pack for some reason)It is possible to look up and find individual strings, but honestly that ends up being more difficult in my opinion and for the cost you might as well grab a set.I am fairly new to guitars as well, so let me just take a moment to say these strings are highly recommended. Great choice. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I put nylon strings on a guitar that use to have metal |
Answer: | I've tried both, and I'd say the polyweb coated strings are less bright. I prefer a brighter sound so I go with the nanoweb. |
Question: | Are the first 3 strings nylon |
Answer: | Because Jeff Bezo's needs money to pay for his expensive divorce. |
Question: | What would be the best string size to use on a used acoustic guitar to be played by a 9 year old boy |
Answer: | I have used almost every brand of strings on my various Martin acoustics. Elixirs stand above the crowd in terms of tone quality. 80/20 bronze bring out the best but need changing about every 2-3 months max for a daily player. Phosphor-bronze have less nuanced tone but still excellent, and seem to last almost twice as long. Recommend 80/20 for the regular player who wants the most "detailed" tone, P-B for more occasional playing and longer life. Discerning players will be happy with either in any case. |
Question: | What would be the downside of putting these strings on an old classical guitar I bought for $25. Would it cause the neck to bow |
Answer: | 80/20s bronze will initially be brighter. Phosphor bronzes will be warmer. 80/20s become warmer after use more quickly and may become undesirable to use more quickly because the strings are no longer giving you the desired tone you started with. Phosphor bronzes hold their initial tone longer, but are by design, warmer. Projection (beyond gauge of the strings~heavy vs medium vs light vs extralight) and ease of fingering have much more to do with the guitar you're using, style of playing (use of a pick/how hard you're strumming/finger-picking), and setup (tuning~you drop down a half a step, the strings will have less tension and will be easier to bend). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why are the 'light' $24.99 and all the others (extra light, etc) only $14.99? also, can i purchase extra individuals of the high g string |
Answer: | I use Martin Light (MA540) and Martin Custom Light (MA535) strings on both my D16RGT and my HD28. Both sets of strings are ball end. Years ago I used Martin Medium (MSP7200) strings and they, too, were ball end. Awhile back Martin changed the product numbers on all their strings and what was MSP7200 is now MA550. I would strongly suspect that the MA550 strings are also ball end. You might check with a local music store by phone to see what they can offer. |
Question: | are these strings balls or ball less |
Answer: | It should fit with no problem. |
Question: | How do you know what size string to get |
Answer: | Im guessing the question is: “Are MA550 Strings made of silk and steel?” If that’s the question, the answer is No. Silk and steel strings, for what might be termed “folk guitars” have the model number MA130. |
Question: | How do these new strings compare to exp, or is it just marketing same strings with new package? people report issues with breaking strings, humm |
Answer: | The main difference is how much string tension, so the low tension will be thinner strings, think of a light set of strings and the medium will have more string tension and be approxiamately equal to a medium set of strings. It depends on your preference but I would recommend the Mid tension as they seem a little lighter than a standard acoustic string set. They sound great and really well balanced, you will notice a positive difference |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I buy it here |
Answer: | It should work just fine. If you are a novice, you can find instructions for string replacement on YouTube. You get a lot for the money. Some strings are color coded to make it easy to identify the different strings. Read instructions for help. Since I think that you might be a novice, I use a battery powered device that you can buy that will easily show you if a string needs to be adjusted for proper sound. Good Luck |
Question: | The pack i got from guitar center has a green circle, are these the same |
Answer: | Two separate controls for Attack and Release. |
Question: | Worth buying |
Answer: | The one I received is just like what is pictured. Input and output Jack's are black. |
Question: | Is this a pack of 6 strings (e, a, d, g, b, e), or is this just a single string pack |
Answer: | No. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this set have a wound third |
Answer: | You can. You will need to do a neck adjustment to makeup for the lower tension. These strings are metal that the question was asked under. |
Question: | I am very sensitive to high pitches and tones. I'm looking for warm low mellow strings. Which set of strings (type and gauge) do you recommend |
Answer: | No, they are plain steel as in other acoustic sets. Nylon would only be found on classical sets. |
Question: | how many strings in the pack |
Answer: | The lighter the guage...the easier to bend. The easier to bend...the harder to control. Since its an acoustic guitar, i would start with 10's ...try .10 to .46. Thats a pretty standard guage. He should be able to tell if he would like a smaller guage in which case go to 9's. Better yet....take him to a guitar shop and let him try some different guage strings. If hes just strumming, he may like the 10's. When hes ready for more sophisticated play, and until his hands get larger and stronger, he may need the 9's. Happy playing! |
Question: | are these ball end or do these come in ball end versions |
Answer: | I have never had a neck bow on me but I feel it is safer to go no smaller than .010 on acoustic guitars. One of my acoustics has delicate, thin wood and is doing fine with these strings. You'll be OK. |

Question: | What is the difference between exp 16 and exp 16 3d strings |
Answer: | The strings I purchased have a large blue-rimmed circle. They are "Custom Light" with a purple circled "11". Strings are MA175, 80/20 Bronze. |
Question: | Do the d'addario *coated* strings offer more resistance to *string bending* than the *non-coated* d'addario strings |
Answer: | Absolutely, seems to be a nice upgrade to the old SP strings from Martin and a great price point! |
Question: | I have a very bright sounding guitar that I want to warm up. How do these strings sound in the range of warmth vs. brightness? Suggestions please |
Answer: | Yes they are E, B, G, D, A, E. Phosphor Bronze, Acoustic Guitar Strings, with wrapped - ball ends. They come in "Light 12" and "Custom Light 11". You can't go wrong with Martin. We use them on a Martin D2R, and also on a Baby Taylor. Just make sure your length is sufficient. |
Question: | If you've tried the EXPs and their non-coated counterparts, have you noticed a difference? Are the EXPs a little less bright, a little warmer |
Answer: | I’m pretty sure the only thing that changed was the packaging. All the strings sizes are the same as the last packaging I have bought both |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any trace of nickel in these strings |
Answer: | I use Martin Light (MA540) and Martin Custom Light (MA535) strings on both my D16RGT and my HD28. Both sets of strings are ball end. Years ago I used Martin Medium (MSP7200) strings and they, too, were ball end. Awhile back Martin changed the product numbers on all their strings and what was MSP7200 is now MA550. I would strongly suspect that the MA550 strings are also ball end. You might check with a local music store by phone to see what they can offer. |
Question: | I am thinking of getting this extra light set for the reason that it is easier on the fingers. is there better alternative to it? f.e. silk $ steel |
Answer: | It should fit with no problem. |
Question: | Trying to get something for my husband. I see the one labeled 12-string. But he also needs a 6 string. Is that just the basic package |
Answer: | Im guessing the question is: “Are MA550 Strings made of silk and steel?” If that’s the question, the answer is No. Silk and steel strings, for what might be termed “folk guitars” have the model number MA130. |
Question: | Size: 2 Pack What does it mean? Is it on sale you can get 2 packs or "2 pack" means for something else? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes |
