11 best johnson acoustic guitar pickups

Johnson acoustic guitar pickups are a type of electronic device used to amplify the sound of acoustic guitars. These pickups are commonly used by musicians to make their acoustic guitars sound louder when playing in live settings or recording in a studio. Here are some key points about Johnson acoustic guitar pickups:

  1. Purpose: Acoustic guitar pickups are designed to capture the vibrations of the guitar strings and convert them into electrical signals. These signals can then be sent to an amplifier or a sound system, allowing the guitar's sound to be projected at a higher volume.

  2. Types of Pickups: Johnson offers a variety of acoustic guitar pickups, including undersaddle pickups, soundhole pickups, and microphone pickups. Each type has its own advantages and characteristics.

    • Undersaddle pickups are installed under the saddle of the guitar and are often considered less invasive as they don't require any drilling or modification to the guitar's body.

    • Soundhole pickups are placed in the soundhole of the guitar and are easy to install and remove. They are a good option for players who want a temporary pickup solution.

    • Microphone pickups are small microphones that can be placed inside the guitar to capture the acoustic sound more naturally. They offer a warm and authentic tone but may be more susceptible to feedback.

  3. Installation: Installing a Johnson acoustic guitar pickup typically requires some basic knowledge of guitar maintenance or the assistance of a luthier. It involves positioning the pickup in the right location and connecting it to an output jack.

  4. Tone and Sound Quality: The choice of pickup can significantly affect the tone and sound quality of an acoustic guitar. Some players prefer the more natural sound of microphone pickups, while others opt for the convenience and feedback resistance of undersaddle or soundhole pickups.

  5. Compatibility: Johnson acoustic guitar pickups are designed to be compatible with various acoustic guitar models. It's essential to ensure that the pickup you choose fits your specific guitar type.

  6. Accessories: When using acoustic guitar pickups, you may also need additional accessories, such as preamps, EQ pedals, or direct boxes, to shape and optimize your amplified sound.

In summary, Johnson acoustic guitar pickups are a popular choice among musicians looking to amplify the sound of their acoustic guitars. They offer various pickup options to cater to different preferences and playing styles, allowing guitarists to achieve the desired tone and volume in different performance settings.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a lot of noise since you can't put a feedback plug in the guitar? Also, can i plug it directly into my Line6 amp(4 electric guitar
Answer: Feedback would depend on your situation, proximity to speakers, size of room, volume level, etc. I never use feedback plug because that's never an issue for us. Yes, you can plug into any amp or preamp. It doesn't have a lot of volume by itself being a passive pickup, so I would recommend plugging into an amp or preamp if going directly into a system.
Question: Has anyone compared this to the "XL" version, is it worth the price difference
Answer: The XL is only different in that it has adjustable pole pieces to balance your string outputs. These lower cost "portable" pickup solutions are not EVER the best sounding, BUT if you purchase an external acoustic guitar PRE-AMP you will find the resulting sound competes with the $300-$400 acoustic/electric guitar setups which always employ a built-in preamp. Then the only drawback as I see it would be esthetics. That's the tradeoff for using a temporary or portable pickup. In my considered opinion a preamp is a must. AND as with all acoustic guitar setups, use an amplifier Fender, Fishman, AER, Marshall, Boss, etc designed for acoustic guitar. Reason being that, Electric Guitar Amps are not generally designed to amplify sounds over 5KHZ. An acoustic guitar should run through an amp designed to reproduce 7KHZ+ faithfully! No acoustic pickup sounds very good running through an electric guitar amplifier. Conclusion. Want this or any pickup on your acoustic to shine; Buy the pickup of your choice, an in-line external preamp and an Acoustic Guitar Amplifier. You may have to drop about $1000 in the long run, but you'll have a lifetime of LOUD Acoustic Guitar Joy my friend!
Question: Can I use it on the little Martin Lxk
Answer: The Woody HC is designed to fit "into standard 3.75" (94mm) to 4" (100mm) sound holes." If the Martin has a sound hole within this range, it should fit. Instructions are included it the packaging. If you don't know the sound hole dimensions, check with Martin.
Question: Can this be installed and easily removed when needed? thanks
Answer: Yes, it is very easy to install and remove.

K&K Pure Mini Acoustic Guitar Pickup

K&K Sound

Based on 674 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Pure Mini is a transducer-only system. No battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. Don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. The Pure Systems are definitely different. They sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and PA systems directly, without a preamp! Advantages of the Pure Guitar System The special Pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. Each of the 3 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. The Pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do NOT sound percussive or harsh. The Pure System reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. The Pure System sounds great just in passive mode! Unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive PURE system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. Feedback Resistance How safe is the Pure System with feedback? Due to the Pure System's location on the bridge plate under the bridge, feedback resistance is comparable to under-saddle transducers. Technically, a pickup installed in or on the bridge is a lot less likely to feedback than one which is attached to the open sound board. The 1/8" thin sound board can act like a diaphragm and vibrate along with loud sound-signals from speaker cabinets. This is the kind of feedback you experience on an acoustic guitar. The thicker bridge area is a lot harder to be set into vibration from an outside source simply because of its mass. In our tests with both, steel string and classic guitars equipped with an under-saddle pickup plus the Pure System, we were able to achieve about the same gain-before-feedback with both systems.

  • Three Transducer Pickup System for Steel String Guitars
  • Includes 1/4" Endpin Jack
  • Pre-wired, No Soldering Required
  • High Output - No Battery Required!

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work on a three string mountain dulcimer
Answer: If you are building a fulcimer, I think so, otherwise I don't know how you would install it. They are mounted under the bridge plate ( superglued). UNLESS you are building the instrument, I don't know how you would install it. You also have to drill the jack mount to the end of the dulcimer. I own a 4 string dulcimer and there is no way to install.
Question: I removed a k&k, one of the super glued heads was ruined. can i get good response with 2 heads only? maybe on a small guitar of uke
Answer: You still should get sound. I am not sure how good it will be. I have not had any experience with this.
Question: Is this a good option for a big guitar such as a Martin HD28V? I am under the impression that this is for smaller guitars
Answer: No, it will work fine in your HD28V - I put one in an HD28 and it sounded great. The mini captures the true essence of your guitar and every one I've installed (mostly in my own guitars), has sounded full and balanced.
Question: How do you install this
Answer: It is installed by applying superglue to the pick ups and gluein them to the bridge plate inside the guitar. It comes with a set up jig and some putty to make sure everything is aligned properly. An average do it yourselfer should be able to accomplish this project, but a luthier would probably do it for around $50. They do sound great by the way in my custom 28.

  • The Neo-D’s low-profile, high-impedance design needs no battery.
  • Easy installation with no alteration!

User questions & answers

Question: is it a passieve or not
Answer: Yes, it is passive. Fishman makes this neo-d passive with humbucker to help with slight humming noise that can potentially come from the pickup depending on your system and usage. Both work well, but if you are worried about stage noise coming from the pickup, etc, I would consider paying more for the humbucker version. However, it depends on your usage and needs. Of course, there are other Fishman pickups as well, but we would need to know more about your goals in order to help you pick up the right pickup. Please let us know if you need further assistance. Thanks!
Question: How long is the cord
Answer: the cord is 9.5 feet long.
Question: Will it work with nylon strings
Answer: These types of pickups will not work on nylon strings. It is a magnetic pickup so it can only sense the vibrations from metal objects. For nylon strings, use a piezo or transducer pickup instead. See this wikipedia excerpt for info: "A magnetic pickup consists of a permanent magnet with a core of material such as alnico or ceramic, wrapped with a coil of several thousand turns of fine enameled copper wire. The pickup is most often mounted on the body of the instrument, but can be attached to the bridge, neck or pickguard, as on many electro-acoustic archtop jazz guitars and string basses. The permanent magnet creates a magnetic field; the motion of the vibrating steel strings disturbs the field, and the changing magnetic flux induces a voltage in the coil. This signal is then carried to amplification or recording equipment via a cable. There may also be an internal preamplifier stage between the pickup and cable."
Question: Can anyone comment on the process involved with running the cable through the guitar to make permamnent? Thx
Answer: This is not the kind to drill a hole in your guitar and make it permanent. There other ones make to do that. My guitar is ventage made before they had built in pickups for this kind of guitar. It was strongly suggested not to drill a hole in it so I got this pick up. It works great for me and getting another one for my ventage 12 string. Whether you drill a hole in it depends of the quality of your guitar and age. If you do have it done I would suggest getting a profesional guitar tech do it. It is more involved than just drilling a hole in it. If you can afford it I would suggest getting one with the pick up built in from the factory. I got another guitar for places I don't want to take my good guitars to for $170 from a pawn shop and it sounds ok. So in short this one is not made to do that. there are several ones that are made to do that, and a professional guitar tech will be able to tell you which one will fit & work best in your guitar.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this thing held on by the strings, or does it have an adesive tape to stick it in place
Answer: You may have to check reverb-dot-com for a used unit to take parts from.
Question: Does the pickup change the break angle of the strings over the bridge
Answer: From the violin pickup you connect to the input on the L.R. Baggs DI (1/4" jack), then another cord (1/4" or microphone type chord goes from output to PA. You then have much more tone control at your fingertips to adjust your tone and if need be your volume.

Answer: Hello; great to hear from you, I have questions before answering, are you playing into an ampliphier or Sound system, thank you; buford
Question: Has anyone else experienced a low hum when using this pickup? Not happy with that
Answer: This preamp does not include a ground lift, you might consider the LR Baggs Session DI instead, which has a ground lift.

L.R. Baggs M1 Active Acoustic Guitar Magnetic Soundhole Pickup

Based on 73 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The M1 is for players who love big acoustic tone with high feedback resistance on any stage. Combining the natural characteristics of your guitar's soundboard with a punchy string attack, the M1's body sensitive design provides enhanced realism while cutting through a loud mix. The M1 is a patented humbucking pickup with a twist. In a common stacked humbucker, the lower coil cancels hum, but doesn't contribute anything positive to the sound. We unlock the lower coil with a carefully tuned support that allows it to capture higher frequency resonances. As the pickup moves with the guitar's soundboard, a body signal is created in the suspended coil that adds presence and realism to your amplified sound.

User questions & answers

Question: I use dadario silk & steel strings. will this work with them since they aren't 100% steel
Answer: I only use steel guitar strings so I don't know the answer to your question. Neo-buster humbusker is working ok. Howard (BO)
Question: Does installation require removing the strings? How does it stay in the sound hole
Answer: I was able to install mine without removing the strings, but I had to use a dremel tool and grind off rubber all the way around the outer edge, quite a bit in order to get it to fit into the sound hole. I would contact the seller after measuring the diameter of your guitar’s soundhole, to ensure that it will fit.
Question: Does this work with nylon strings
Answer: No, you need a piezo style pickup. This particular pickup also would not fit the mounting hole in any of my acoustic guitars.
Question: Would this be good to record with using a USB audiobox
Answer: Hey, yes the sound is amazing. Also, there is no noise. Real good reproduction of the entire sound spectrum of the guitar. You could go for this without a second thought. Also, the resonance is amazing.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a template
Answer: Our Sauvie will be good to wear in mild cold temperatures. We would not recommend for colder/extreme winter weather.
Question: Does this come with a pick up rod
Answer: These are women's sizes. In reading reviews of many rain boots that don't come in 1/2 sizes, it seems that people usually have to go up a full size and hope for the best. I have tried this with other boots and not been happy with either fit. Unfortunately it is trial and error. I went through many boots before finding these.
Question: What is the measurement between screws
Answer: I haven’t been on ice yet but I wouldn’t expect them to be as good as nonslip as boots made specially for ice. The tread just isn’t that deep. I love these boots though.
Question: My guitar does not have this normally but I want to install one for recording purposes, will this work
Answer: Yes. Very comfortable and flex easily.
