9 best p90 pickups
P90 pickups are a type of single-coil electric guitar pickup known for their distinct sound and characteristics. Here's some information about P90 pickups:
Design: P90 pickups are single-coil pickups that are larger and wider than typical Stratocaster-style single-coils. They have a distinctive soapbar or dog-ear shape, which refers to the two common housing designs.
Tone: P90 pickups are renowned for their warm, fat, and midrange-rich tone. They produce a thicker and more aggressive sound compared to traditional single-coil pickups. This makes them suitable for various music genres, including rock, blues, and jazz.
Output: P90s typically have a higher output compared to standard single-coil pickups. This increased output contributes to their powerful and punchy sound.
Noise: One drawback of P90 pickups is that they are more susceptible to electromagnetic interference (hum) compared to humbuckers. However, many modern P90 pickups are designed with noise-canceling features to minimize this issue.
Versatility: P90 pickups can be quite versatile, with the ability to produce both clean and distorted tones. They excel at providing a raw and gritty sound when overdriven.
Guitar Compatibility: P90 pickups are commonly found on electric guitars, including Gibson Les Paul Junior and Special models. They can also be retrofitted onto some guitars as an alternative pickup choice.
Pickup Covers: P90 pickups may come with metal pickup covers or be exposed, depending on the guitar's design. Pickup covers can affect the tonal characteristics, with covered pickups often having a slightly smoother sound.
Wiring: P90 pickups can be wired in various configurations, including single-coil and humbucker-sized versions, allowing for more tonal options in guitars with multiple pickups.
Maintenance: Like other guitar pickups, P90s require regular maintenance and cleaning to ensure optimal performance. Keeping them free of dirt and corrosion is important.
Popularity: P90 pickups have a dedicated following among guitarists who appreciate their unique tone. They continue to be a popular choice for players looking for a distinctive sound.
In summary, P90 pickups are known for their unique and powerful tone, making them a preferred choice for many guitarists in various musical genres. Their distinctive sound and design have earned them a significant place in the world of electric guitars and pickups.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are this the same size as gibson, or other standard p90s? will they fit in the same route |
Answer: | Sorry, you can't. The sise and the shape doesn't fit on a LP. Maybe there are extra parts which I don't know |
Question: | I don't understand the dimensions. how can it be 6 inches? I'm wondering if this will fit in a tele bridge |
Answer: | We primarily install these on Cigar Box Guitars, which involves routing the hole, and running the wires/drilling the holes for the pots and jack. Installation would depend on what type of instrument that you are installing in. Some guitars have a full-route for wires and pots, and others do feed their wires through the body. Unfortunately I can't confidently advise on the best way to go about it, as we don't have any experience installing them on 6-strings. |
Question: | What is the pole spacing |
Answer: | Depends. It is soap bar rather than traditional dog ear P90. So this requires screwing into body or a pickup ring. |
Question: | Would this pickup work for a 6-string lap steel |
Answer: | Yes it does make hot chocolate as long as you buy the Tassimo T-Discs.I found them hard to get compared to K-Cup pods which are widely available, also to properly clean it is a bit of a pain. It needs cleaning more often if you use chocolate, or latte. mixes. I stopped using it. |
Question: | Is this the pickup that Billie joe Armstrong uses |
Answer: | Bosch has a lot of newer models of coffee makers, but I don’t think any of them is next T55 version |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the string spacing 50mm or 52mm |
Answer: | Should work fine if the string spacing is right. It sounds great in my 58 Les Paul Jr. |
Question: | What are the ohms rated on this pickup |
Answer: | According to the Seymour Duncan web site he mostly uses a JB humbuckers. P-90 pickups are single coil. I have this one in my 1958 Les Paul Jr. and it sounds great but if you want Billie Joe Armstrong’s sound you probably want the JB. If your pickup cavity is routed for a P-90 a humbuckers won’t fit. |

The Seymour Duncan SP90-3 is a high output P-90 single coil soapbar pickup. Excellent for modern country, heavy blues, classic rock, hard rock, punk, garage and metal. Unlike the SP90-2 Hot, the Custom uses two large ceramic magnets for extra output, more compressed dynamics and sharper attack. The result is a full frequency response with extra punch. Comes with single-conductor hookup cable. Slightly shorter .585" height profile. Available for both neck (SP90-3n) and bridge (SP90-3b) positions in a balanced set. Often, the SP90-3 Custom is used in the bridge with an SP90-1 Vintage in the neck position for tonal versatility. For balanced and brighter-toned instruments. Works especially well with maple and ebony fingerboards. Players include Rodney Cravens / Dishwalla (bridge), Brent Woods / Vince Neil Band (bridge), James Pennebaker / Lee Roy Parnell & Delbert McClinton (bridge), Mike Stone / Queensryche.

User questions & answers
Question: | What value pots and cap are you folks using for these pickups please |
Answer: | Tonerider Website states: Neck 7.8k / Bridge 8.2k, Alnico V |
Question: | Can you tell me how this particular set is wound? Over/Under? Both |
Answer: | Yes, these P90's are a standard size. |
Question: | Are these 50mm pole spacing |
Answer: | I think those dimensions refer to the box it comes in. This is a standard P-90 pickup. I put it in a 1958 Les Paul Jr. Might but it might not fit in the tele if the pickup slot is not routed for P90 size as they are a single coil Fender size normally. A P-90 is wider than a Fender single coil pickup. |
Question: | How many conductor are these |
Answer: | I don't have it with me to measure but I know it is standard Gibson spacing. It says so on the Seymour Duncan web site. There are bridge and neck versions with slightly different output levels. It sounds really great if you decide to get it. |
