12 best guitar pickups

Guitar pickups are essential components in electric and acoustic-electric guitars, responsible for capturing the vibrations of the strings and converting them into electrical signals that can be amplified and heard through an amplifier or PA system. They play a crucial role in shaping the tone and sound of the guitar. Here are some key aspects of guitar pickups:

  1. Types of Guitar Pickups:

    • Single-Coil Pickups: These are known for their bright, clear, and articulate sound. They consist of a single coil of wire wrapped around magnetic poles. Examples include the Fender Stratocaster pickups.
    • Humbucking Pickups: Humbuckers use two coils in opposite polarity to cancel out noise and interference, resulting in a thicker and smoother sound with reduced hum. Gibson's PAF (Patent Applied For) pickups are classic examples.
    • P-90 Pickups: These are a type of single-coil pickup but with larger dimensions, providing a unique combination of warmth and clarity. They are often found on Gibson guitars.
    • Active Pickups: Active pickups require a battery to power built-in preamps. They offer high output, clarity, and low noise, popular among heavy metal and hard rock players.
  2. Magnet Types:

    • Alnico: Alnico magnets (aluminum, nickel, and cobalt) are commonly used in pickups. Different alloys, such as Alnico II, III, IV, and V, produce varying tonal characteristics.
    • Ceramic: Ceramic magnets provide a stronger magnetic field and are often associated with higher output and a more aggressive sound.
  3. Positioning:

    • Pickup placement affects the tone. Bridge pickups tend to produce a brighter and sharper sound, while neck pickups are warmer and more mellow. The middle pickup, if present, offers a balanced tone.
  4. Coil Wiring:

    • The number of windings in the coil and the wire gauge used can affect a pickup's output, brightness, and overall character. More windings generally result in higher output and a darker tone.
  5. Pickup Covers:

    • Pickup covers, often made of plastic or metal, can affect a pickup's tonal response.Covered pickups may sound slightly warmer than uncovered ones.
  6. Piezo Pickups:

    • Piezo pickups are commonly used in acoustic-electric guitars. They capture the vibrations of the guitar's bridge or saddle and provide a natural acoustic sound when amplified.
  7. Installation and Replacement:

    • Guitarists can replace pickups to customize their guitar's tone. It's important to choose pickups that match your playing style and desired sound. Installation often requires soldering and should be done by a professional if you're not experienced.
  8. Tonal Characteristics:

    • Pickups significantly influence a guitar's tonal characteristics, including brightness, warmth, sustain, and overall character. Different pickups are preferred for various genres and playing styles.
  9. Mixing Pickups:

    • Some guitars have multiple pickups (e.g., a combination of single-coil and humbucking pickups). This allows players to blend different tonal qualities for versatility.
  10. Maintenance:

    • Keeping pickups clean and free from debris can help maintain their performance. Regularly inspecting and adjusting pickup height can also affect the guitar's output and tone.

In summary, guitar pickups are critical components that greatly influence the sound of electric and acoustic-electric guitars. Understanding the types of pickups, their characteristics, and their placement on the guitar can help guitarists choose the pickups that best suit their playing style and musical preferences.

K&K Pure Mini Acoustic Guitar Pickup

K&K Sound

Based on 674 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Pure Mini is a transducer-only system. No battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. Don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. The Pure Systems are definitely different. They sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and PA systems directly, without a preamp! Advantages of the Pure Guitar System The special Pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. Each of the 3 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. The Pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do NOT sound percussive or harsh. The Pure System reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. The Pure System sounds great just in passive mode! Unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive PURE system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. Feedback Resistance How safe is the Pure System with feedback? Due to the Pure System's location on the bridge plate under the bridge, feedback resistance is comparable to under-saddle transducers. Technically, a pickup installed in or on the bridge is a lot less likely to feedback than one which is attached to the open sound board. The 1/8" thin sound board can act like a diaphragm and vibrate along with loud sound-signals from speaker cabinets. This is the kind of feedback you experience on an acoustic guitar. The thicker bridge area is a lot harder to be set into vibration from an outside source simply because of its mass. In our tests with both, steel string and classic guitars equipped with an under-saddle pickup plus the Pure System, we were able to achieve about the same gain-before-feedback with both systems.

  • Three Transducer Pickup System for Steel String Guitars
  • Includes 1/4" Endpin Jack
  • Pre-wired, No Soldering Required
  • High Output - No Battery Required!

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work on a three string mountain dulcimer
Answer: If you are building a fulcimer, I think so, otherwise I don't know how you would install it. They are mounted under the bridge plate ( superglued). UNLESS you are building the instrument, I don't know how you would install it. You also have to drill the jack mount to the end of the dulcimer. I own a 4 string dulcimer and there is no way to install.
Question: I removed a k&k, one of the super glued heads was ruined. can i get good response with 2 heads only? maybe on a small guitar of uke
Answer: You still should get sound. I am not sure how good it will be. I have not had any experience with this.
Question: Is this a good option for a big guitar such as a Martin HD28V? I am under the impression that this is for smaller guitars
Answer: No, it will work fine in your HD28V - I put one in an HD28 and it sounded great. The mini captures the true essence of your guitar and every one I've installed (mostly in my own guitars), has sounded full and balanced.
Question: How do you install this
Answer: It is installed by applying superglue to the pick ups and gluein them to the bridge plate inside the guitar. It comes with a set up jig and some putty to make sure everything is aligned properly. An average do it yourselfer should be able to accomplish this project, but a luthier would probably do it for around $50. They do sound great by the way in my custom 28.

  • The Neo-D’s low-profile, high-impedance design needs no battery.
  • Easy installation with no alteration!

User questions & answers

Question: is it a passieve or not
Answer: Yes, it is passive. Fishman makes this neo-d passive with humbucker to help with slight humming noise that can potentially come from the pickup depending on your system and usage. Both work well, but if you are worried about stage noise coming from the pickup, etc, I would consider paying more for the humbucker version. However, it depends on your usage and needs. Of course, there are other Fishman pickups as well, but we would need to know more about your goals in order to help you pick up the right pickup. Please let us know if you need further assistance. Thanks!
Question: How long is the cord
Answer: the cord is 9.5 feet long.
Question: Will it work with nylon strings
Answer: These types of pickups will not work on nylon strings. It is a magnetic pickup so it can only sense the vibrations from metal objects. For nylon strings, use a piezo or transducer pickup instead. See this wikipedia excerpt for info: "A magnetic pickup consists of a permanent magnet with a core of material such as alnico or ceramic, wrapped with a coil of several thousand turns of fine enameled copper wire. The pickup is most often mounted on the body of the instrument, but can be attached to the bridge, neck or pickguard, as on many electro-acoustic archtop jazz guitars and string basses. The permanent magnet creates a magnetic field; the motion of the vibrating steel strings disturbs the field, and the changing magnetic flux induces a voltage in the coil. This signal is then carried to amplification or recording equipment via a cable. There may also be an internal preamplifier stage between the pickup and cable."
Question: Can anyone comment on the process involved with running the cable through the guitar to make permamnent? Thx
Answer: This is not the kind to drill a hole in your guitar and make it permanent. There other ones make to do that. My guitar is ventage made before they had built in pickups for this kind of guitar. It was strongly suggested not to drill a hole in it so I got this pick up. It works great for me and getting another one for my ventage 12 string. Whether you drill a hole in it depends of the quality of your guitar and age. If you do have it done I would suggest getting a profesional guitar tech do it. It is more involved than just drilling a hole in it. If you can afford it I would suggest getting one with the pick up built in from the factory. I got another guitar for places I don't want to take my good guitars to for $170 from a pawn shop and it sounds ok. So in short this one is not made to do that. there are several ones that are made to do that, and a professional guitar tech will be able to tell you which one will fit & work best in your guitar.

Electric Guitar Pickup Ceremic Magnet Neck Middle Bridge Single Coil Pickups Compatible with Strat Style SSS Electric Guitar Parts Replacement Set of 3Pcs White.

Based on 64 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Features:

Neck Pickup. String span is 48 mm, with the pole pieces 10 mm apart. Resistance is 5.52-5.54 k-ohm. Inductance is 3.1 - 3.17H compared to our standard wound coils which produce 1.98 Henry yet have the same resistance. South pole is facing up.

Middle Pickup. String span is 50mm with the pole pieces 10mm apart. Resistance is 5.1-5.52 k-ohm. Inductance is 3 - 3.2 Henry. Reverse wound and opposed magnetic polarity, North pole faces up.

Bridge Pickup. String span is 52mm with the pole pieces 10.4mm apart. Resistance is 5.97-6.1 k-ohm. Inductance is 3.72 - 3.77H as opposed to our standard wind of 2.61 Henry. South pole faces up.

To give you some idea and comparison of their power a US-Strat ( 72 ) has an inductance of 2.2 Henry on the bridge and a noiseless Strat of around 2.5 Henry so expect these pickups to have a fuller sound with increased mid and lows whilst retaining the clarity and bright tone of the trebles as you would expect from single coils.

Metallor pickups use ceramic magnets as these are even brighter than Alnico V or III, and in higher output pickups help to counterbalance the treble lost by the higher resistance (remember higher resistance means more midrange, but less highs).

  • These are a single coil design machine winding and calibrated with the magnetic field to produce double the output inductance of regular single coils with each set of pickups having its own unique flavour. This special winding also has the added advantage of keeping the Ohms roughly the same as a vintage wound single coil.
  • Each pickup is designed for a specific location to match up with the increasing width between strings and produces the ideal power for that tonal position.
  • The mid position pickup is reverse wound and opposed magentic polarity to ensure true hum cancelling properties in switch positions 2 and 4. All pickups are wax potted to reduce unwanted noise
  • Flat pole pieces and no trapezoid bases mean these pickups are suitable for left and right handed guitars.
  • Supplied with screws and springs for fixing. All coils are wax potted

Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz Set Electric Guitar Electronics

Seymour Duncan

Based on 369 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Seymour created this classic humbucker combination while in England in 1974, and it remains his favorite set of pickups to this day an SH-4 JB for the bridge and SH-2n Jazz Model for the neck. Together they provide one of the most versatile humbucker ever built. The JB Model humbucker is our most popular pickup of all time. It adds juice and versatility to the bridge position of any humbucker equipped guitar. With its hot coils, and alnico 5 bar magnet, this pickup delivers an unmistakable upper midrange attack, a tight, articulate low end, and harmonically rich highs that can really sing. The JB is the perfect bridge pickup for anything from blues & country to the meanest hard rock & metal. The Jazz Model neck humbucker uses an alnico 5 bar magnet and a special coil wind for an articulate, glassy treble response that balances very well with its full, but tight low end. The scooped midrange gives this pickup a smooth tonal character all its own. Originally designed as the matching neck pickup for the JB Model bridge pickup, the Jazz is an incredibly versatile humbucker that will work for almost any style of music. The Jazz Model is an excellent neck position counterpart for almost any of our moderate to high-output bridge humbuckers. The Jazz Model has been used by many great players over the decades, from Randy Rhoads to Jeff Beck to Seymour W Duncan. Hand built in our Santa Barbara, CA, factory, these humbuckers use an alnico 5 bar magnet, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and are vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance.

  • The ultimate Hot Rodded humbucker set
  • Matched set of JB and Jazz Neck models
  • Combination versatile enough for classic rock to extreme metal
  • 4-conductor cable and wax potted
  • Alnico V magnets

User questions & answers

Question: Will these fit an sg? specifically i have a chinese sg copy, with "hum buckers" in it. i am trying to upgrade it
Answer: No sir. Mrs. Ybarra retired in 2013. http://www.guitarworld.com/pickup-winderbuilder-abigail-ybarra-who-came-fender-1956-retires
Question: Are these good for high gain amps? I want something right inbetween vintage and super high muddy output like an invader
Answer: Yes, we can throw in a set of black covers. Just send us (Music UFO) a message via Amazon system after you buy, and we will include the additional covers in the package. Thanks.
Question: What would be a good single coil to use with these in a HSH setup
Answer: I don't remember if they are marked, but I just looked at my guitar. The pickup with the taller of the two mounting bracket is for the bridge. The other, with the slightly shorter surrounding mounting bracket is for the neck.
Question: Do they come in zebra or crime
Answer: Yes they would work fine, they are a great sounding pickup set, they're matched pretty well. The neck pickup isn't as powerful as the bridge but it's solid!!!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with two
Answer: yes, they will fit any standard humbucker equipped guitar. I have a set of Seymour Duncan humbuckers in my Epiphone Les Paul.
Question: Are these pickups noisey or they pretty quiet
Answer: Invaders are super hot you almost have no cleans with invaders. These are sh4 JB for the bridge and SH2n Jazz for the neck.... these are a good match but if you want something slightly hotter use an SH1n 59 in the neck and the SH4 JB in the bridge both of these are good matches with very good distortion if needed without the ugly muddy tone..... think Van Halen Ozzy Ozbourn, or most 80s hair bands..... if you need something heavier there are the invaders and Duncan Distortions but if you need versatility with clean as well as distorted.... use the JB in the Bridge and either the SH2n Jazz or the SH1 59 int the neck........ MY Preference is JB 59 set but JB Jazz is a great combo as well have fun guys!!!
Question: Is there any way this could work on a Strat??? I need a HB
Answer: Little 59 YJM fury Or the staggered ones ssl5 As these pickups are high output, these way the middle pickup would still be heard and has its own separate thing
Question: Are these ceramic or alnico pickups
Answer: They only come in crime if you steal them!

Question: Does it have a lot of noise since you can't put a feedback plug in the guitar? Also, can i plug it directly into my Line6 amp(4 electric guitar
Answer: Feedback would depend on your situation, proximity to speakers, size of room, volume level, etc. I never use feedback plug because that's never an issue for us. Yes, you can plug into any amp or preamp. It doesn't have a lot of volume by itself being a passive pickup, so I would recommend plugging into an amp or preamp if going directly into a system.
Question: Has anyone compared this to the "XL" version, is it worth the price difference
Answer: The XL is only different in that it has adjustable pole pieces to balance your string outputs. These lower cost "portable" pickup solutions are not EVER the best sounding, BUT if you purchase an external acoustic guitar PRE-AMP you will find the resulting sound competes with the $300-$400 acoustic/electric guitar setups which always employ a built-in preamp. Then the only drawback as I see it would be esthetics. That's the tradeoff for using a temporary or portable pickup. In my considered opinion a preamp is a must. AND as with all acoustic guitar setups, use an amplifier Fender, Fishman, AER, Marshall, Boss, etc designed for acoustic guitar. Reason being that, Electric Guitar Amps are not generally designed to amplify sounds over 5KHZ. An acoustic guitar should run through an amp designed to reproduce 7KHZ+ faithfully! No acoustic pickup sounds very good running through an electric guitar amplifier. Conclusion. Want this or any pickup on your acoustic to shine; Buy the pickup of your choice, an in-line external preamp and an Acoustic Guitar Amplifier. You may have to drop about $1000 in the long run, but you'll have a lifetime of LOUD Acoustic Guitar Joy my friend!
Question: Can I use it on the little Martin Lxk
Answer: The Woody HC is designed to fit "into standard 3.75" (94mm) to 4" (100mm) sound holes." If the Martin has a sound hole within this range, it should fit. Instructions are included it the packaging. If you don't know the sound hole dimensions, check with Martin.
Question: Can this be installed and easily removed when needed? thanks
Answer: Yes, it is very easy to install and remove.

Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Set Humbucker Pickups - Zebra/Reverse Zebra

Product description

When Slash was given the honor of having a Gibson Les Paul Signature model built, we sent over the same Alnico 2 Pro humbuckers that he has used for decades. Turns out, the new guitars sounded noticeably different than the original. So we accepted the challenge to make him a new pickup that would make all of his new signature guitars sound just like the original AFD Les Paul. The result is the Slash Signature Model humbucker. We used a different mag wire and winding spec, that, when combined with the alnico 2 bar magnet, provided exactly what was needed to push a stock Les Paul toward that familiar sustain, crunch, and midrange that was so characteristic of the tone of Slash's original Derrig Les Paul copy. The Slash humbucker set is hand built in Santa Barbara the same way we built his originals in the 80s, using a nickel silver bottom plate with long mounting legs, single conductor braided lead wire, maple spacer, paper tape, and wax potting.
