13 best guitars pickups
Guitar pickups are essential components of electric guitars, responsible for capturing the vibrations of the guitar strings and converting them into electrical signals that can be amplified. Here's what you need to know about guitar pickups:
1. Types of Pickups: There are several types of guitar pickups, but the most common ones are single-coil pickups and humbucker pickups. Single-coil pickups produce a clear, bright tone and are known for their clarity and sharpness. Humbucker pickups, on the other hand, use two coils to cancel out the interference or "hum" present in single-coil pickups, resulting in a warmer, thicker tone with reduced noise.
2. Pickup Placement: Pickups are usually placed in specific positions on the guitar. The most common setup is having one or more pickups near the bridge (bridge pickup) and/or near the neck (neck pickup). Some guitars, especially electric guitars, have a middle pickup between the bridge and neck pickups, offering a versatile range of tones.
3. Coil Configurations: Pickups can come in different coil configurations, affecting the guitar's sound. For example, single-coil pickups can be wired in a way that produces a "humbucking" effect, reducing noise. Humbuckers can also have different wiring configurations, altering their output and tone.
4. Active vs. Passive Pickups: Pickups can be categorized as active or passive. Active pickups require an external power source (usually a 9V battery) and offer a higher output signal, making them ideal for high-gain and metal styles. Passive pickups, on the other hand, do not require external power and have a more organic, dynamic response, suitable for a wide range of genres.
5. Pickup Selector Switch: Electric guitars often have a pickup selector switch, allowing the player to choose between different pickups or combinations of pickups. This switch significantly influences the guitar's tone and versatility, enabling players to switch between warm, mellow sounds and sharp, bright tones.
6. Customization: Guitarists often customize their instruments by replacing pickups to achieve specific tonal characteristics. Different pickups can dramatically alter the guitar's sound, allowing players to tailor their instrument to their playing style and musical preferences.
7. Maintenance: Proper maintenance of pickups involves keeping them clean and free from dirt and debris. Regular cleaning and inspection ensure that the pickups continue to function optimally, delivering the best possible sound quality.
Understanding pickups and their characteristics is crucial for guitarists seeking to explore various tones and styles, making an informed decision when choosing or customizing their electric guitars.

Seymour created this classic humbucker combination while in England in 1974, and it remains his favorite set of pickups to this day an SH-4 JB for the bridge and SH-2n Jazz Model for the neck. Together they provide one of the most versatile humbucker ever built. The JB Model humbucker is our most popular pickup of all time. It adds juice and versatility to the bridge position of any humbucker equipped guitar. With its hot coils, and alnico 5 bar magnet, this pickup delivers an unmistakable upper midrange attack, a tight, articulate low end, and harmonically rich highs that can really sing. The JB is the perfect bridge pickup for anything from blues & country to the meanest hard rock & metal. The Jazz Model neck humbucker uses an alnico 5 bar magnet and a special coil wind for an articulate, glassy treble response that balances very well with its full, but tight low end. The scooped midrange gives this pickup a smooth tonal character all its own. Originally designed as the matching neck pickup for the JB Model bridge pickup, the Jazz is an incredibly versatile humbucker that will work for almost any style of music. The Jazz Model is an excellent neck position counterpart for almost any of our moderate to high-output bridge humbuckers. The Jazz Model has been used by many great players over the decades, from Randy Rhoads to Jeff Beck to Seymour W Duncan. Hand built in our Santa Barbara, CA, factory, these humbuckers use an alnico 5 bar magnet, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and are vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, do they fit into a jaguar classic player hh |
Answer: | Not familiar with the Jaguar. Used mine in a Strat and worked great. Great sounding and if you are replaceing a double they would work. |
Question: | I realize this considered a bridge pickup; but I’m thinking about putting it in my neck position. Has anyone tried that |
Answer: | Yes, I have one in the neck of my Sheridan. I also have one on the bridge of my Carvin SH575. It is such a powerful pickup, in the future I will probably use JBs in both so that the levels are easier to match, but it makes an outstanding neck pickup. I don't find it too treble-ish, just thick and full. |
Question: | Hello, Will this fit in a Ibanez S470dx |
Answer: | Hi,TB-4's are spaced to fit guitars that are equipped with a Floyd Rose bridge. I'm not sure if the Ibanez has the same string spacing as a Floyd. I would assume they would be but that's just a guess. |
Question: | Will this fit in a PRS 245 se |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't, it's the same size as any other humbucker. |

Product description
The Pure Mini is a transducer-only system. No battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. Don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. The Pure Systems are definitely different. They sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and PA systems directly, without a preamp! Advantages of the Pure Guitar System The special Pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. Each of the 3 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. The Pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do NOT sound percussive or harsh. The Pure System reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. The Pure System sounds great just in passive mode! Unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive PURE system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. Feedback Resistance How safe is the Pure System with feedback? Due to the Pure System's location on the bridge plate under the bridge, feedback resistance is comparable to under-saddle transducers. Technically, a pickup installed in or on the bridge is a lot less likely to feedback than one which is attached to the open sound board. The 1/8" thin sound board can act like a diaphragm and vibrate along with loud sound-signals from speaker cabinets. This is the kind of feedback you experience on an acoustic guitar. The thicker bridge area is a lot harder to be set into vibration from an outside source simply because of its mass. In our tests with both, steel string and classic guitars equipped with an under-saddle pickup plus the Pure System, we were able to achieve about the same gain-before-feedback with both systems.
- Three Transducer Pickup System for Steel String Guitars
- Includes 1/4" Endpin Jack
- Pre-wired, No Soldering Required
- High Output - No Battery Required!
User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work on a three string mountain dulcimer |
Answer: | If you are building a fulcimer, I think so, otherwise I don't know how you would install it. They are mounted under the bridge plate ( superglued). UNLESS you are building the instrument, I don't know how you would install it. You also have to drill the jack mount to the end of the dulcimer. I own a 4 string dulcimer and there is no way to install. |
Question: | I removed a k&k, one of the super glued heads was ruined. can i get good response with 2 heads only? maybe on a small guitar of uke |
Answer: | You still should get sound. I am not sure how good it will be. I have not had any experience with this. |
Question: | Is this a good option for a big guitar such as a Martin HD28V? I am under the impression that this is for smaller guitars |
Answer: | No, it will work fine in your HD28V - I put one in an HD28 and it sounded great. The mini captures the true essence of your guitar and every one I've installed (mostly in my own guitars), has sounded full and balanced. |
Question: | How do you install this |
Answer: | It is installed by applying superglue to the pick ups and gluein them to the bridge plate inside the guitar. It comes with a set up jig and some putty to make sure everything is aligned properly. An average do it yourselfer should be able to accomplish this project, but a luthier would probably do it for around $50. They do sound great by the way in my custom 28. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I use this and conect it to the preamp my dean exotic has |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | will this work with a acoustic guitar mounted pre amp |
Answer: | Not without extensive modification. The pickup has a 10+ foot core with a 1/4 inch plug on the end. (Intended to plug into a pedal board or amp.). To run it into an onboard preamp, you'd have to cut the cord, run it through the sound hole, and solder it to the preamp... Probably not worth it. |
Question: | Will this work plugged into my B100 Acoustic bass amp |
Answer: | yes you can use is for a acoustic bass amp but i dont know if you can fit that pick-up in a acoustic bass i hade to cut a little peace out of my guaitar to git it in the sond hole |
Question: | Whats different between this and the seymour duncan woody series sc sa-3sc |
Answer: | The SC series are single coil pickups, while the HC are hum-cancelling (humbucker). Single coil pickups tend to have a more open, brighter sound but can be more susceptible to hum and noise depending on your stage situation. Humbucker pickups cancel the hum and noise, but also some highs so the sound is thicker and warmer. |
- Good Sound- The Acoustic Guitar Pickup comes with double sided tape and self adhesive Velcro,it is able to eliminate interfering external sounds and not be influenced by sound reflections from nearby objects, bring you the clear sound quality.
- Stick Patch Design - With the stick patch transducer works by contacting with the sound source directly. it is very easy to install and you can stick it onto the instrument to minimize the damage to instrument body.
- Nice Audio Jack - Randon Piezo Contact Pickup, 9.65” cable length, Jack female socket, suitable for universal cable with 6.35cm jack male plug. The audio jack can replace the end pin and install the strap.
- Wide Application - The guitar pickup fits for many kinds of acoustic instruments, such as Guitar, Ukulele, Violin, Mandolin, Banjo, Kalimba, Harp etc.

Features:
Neck Pickup. String span is 48 mm, with the pole pieces 10 mm apart. Resistance is 5.52-5.54 k-ohm. Inductance is 3.1 - 3.17H compared to our standard wound coils which produce 1.98 Henry yet have the same resistance. South pole is facing up.
Middle Pickup. String span is 50mm with the pole pieces 10mm apart. Resistance is 5.1-5.52 k-ohm. Inductance is 3 - 3.2 Henry. Reverse wound and opposed magnetic polarity, North pole faces up.
Bridge Pickup. String span is 52mm with the pole pieces 10.4mm apart. Resistance is 5.97-6.1 k-ohm. Inductance is 3.72 - 3.77H as opposed to our standard wind of 2.61 Henry. South pole faces up.
To give you some idea and comparison of their power a US-Strat ( 72 ) has an inductance of 2.2 Henry on the bridge and a noiseless Strat of around 2.5 Henry so expect these pickups to have a fuller sound with increased mid and lows whilst retaining the clarity and bright tone of the trebles as you would expect from single coils.
Metallor pickups use ceramic magnets as these are even brighter than Alnico V or III, and in higher output pickups help to counterbalance the treble lost by the higher resistance (remember higher resistance means more midrange, but less highs).
- These are a single coil design machine winding and calibrated with the magnetic field to produce double the output inductance of regular single coils with each set of pickups having its own unique flavour. This special winding also has the added advantage of keeping the Ohms roughly the same as a vintage wound single coil.
- Each pickup is designed for a specific location to match up with the increasing width between strings and produces the ideal power for that tonal position.
- The mid position pickup is reverse wound and opposed magentic polarity to ensure true hum cancelling properties in switch positions 2 and 4. All pickups are wax potted to reduce unwanted noise
- Flat pole pieces and no trapezoid bases mean these pickups are suitable for left and right handed guitars.
- Supplied with screws and springs for fixing. All coils are wax potted

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with two |
Answer: | yes, they will fit any standard humbucker equipped guitar. I have a set of Seymour Duncan humbuckers in my Epiphone Les Paul. |
Question: | Are these pickups noisey or they pretty quiet |
Answer: | Invaders are super hot you almost have no cleans with invaders. These are sh4 JB for the bridge and SH2n Jazz for the neck.... these are a good match but if you want something slightly hotter use an SH1n 59 in the neck and the SH4 JB in the bridge both of these are good matches with very good distortion if needed without the ugly muddy tone..... think Van Halen Ozzy Ozbourn, or most 80s hair bands..... if you need something heavier there are the invaders and Duncan Distortions but if you need versatility with clean as well as distorted.... use the JB in the Bridge and either the SH2n Jazz or the SH1 59 int the neck........ MY Preference is JB 59 set but JB Jazz is a great combo as well have fun guys!!! |
Question: | Is there any way this could work on a Strat??? I need a HB |
Answer: | Little 59 YJM fury Or the staggered ones ssl5 As these pickups are high output, these way the middle pickup would still be heard and has its own separate thing |
Question: | Are these ceramic or alnico pickups |
Answer: | They only come in crime if you steal them! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello. ¿Is this a 4 conductor pickup? Thank you |
Answer: | This set has vintage single conductor wiring. To get four-conductor wiring you would need to purchase the 4-conductor bridge and neck models separately, which we have available with either nickel or gold covers. |
Question: | Who would appreciate this more, a jazz or rock guitarist |
Answer: | Either. The jazz guitarist will easily like this, as long as we aren’t talking about 70s era Al DiMeola standing next to a non-master Marshall jazz. If you are talking about Fender blackface with sparkling reverb, then ‘yes’ these are killer pickups. The rock guitarist who wants dynamics and isn’t using a heavily saturated 100 watt stack (and standing next to it) will love it as well. I like them with some overdrive, but usually nothing more than what’s available on a Clone tweed Deluxe-type amp. Enjoy! You really can’t go wrong with these pickups. |
Question: | Could I replace these myself or do i need to have a professional do it |
Answer: | Some basic soldering skills are needed as well as ability to read a simple wiring diagram. If you can do both those things you should be able to do it. |
Question: | Are these pickups good with coil split |
Answer: | I wish I could answer your question. I only have one guitar with split coils. I have the original coils still on it. Sorry. Mike: |
