10 best wireless instrument systems

Wireless instrument systems are devices designed to free musicians from the constraints of traditional instrument cables, providing them with greater mobility on stage or in the studio. These systems are commonly used with electric guitars, basses, and other musical instruments that typically require a physical cable to connect to an amplifier or other audio equipment.

Key features and components of wireless instrument systems include:

  1. Transmitter and Receiver:

    • Transmitter: Attached to the instrument, the transmitter converts the instrument's signal into a radio frequency (RF) signal.
    • Receiver: Connected to the amplifier or other audio equipment, the receiver picks up the RF signal and converts it back into an audio signal.
  2. Frequency Range:

    • Wireless instrument systems operate within specific frequency ranges, and it's crucial to choose a system that operates within legal and interference-free frequencies.
  3. Channels:

    • Some wireless systems offer multiple channels, allowing musicians to select the best frequency for their environment and avoid interference from other wireless devices.
  4. Range:

    • The range of a wireless instrument system is the maximum distance between the transmitter and receiver before the signal quality begins to degrade. This is an essential consideration for musicians who need to move around on stage.
  5. Battery Life:

    • Since these systems are typically battery-powered, the battery life of both the transmitter and receiver is crucial. Long battery life ensures uninterrupted performances.
  6. Compatibility:

    • Ensure compatibility with your specific instrument and amplifier. Different systems may have different connectors or impedance requirements.
  7. Latency:

    • Low latency is important for live performances, as high latency can result in noticeable delays between playing an instrument and hearing the sound.
  8. Durability and Build Quality:

    • As with any musical equipment, durability is key. Robust construction helps the system withstand the rigors of touring and frequent use.
  9. Antenna Options:

    • Some systems come with external antennas that can be adjusted for optimal signal reception.

Wireless instrument systems provide convenience and flexibility for musicians, particularly those who move around on stage. However, it's essential to carefully choose a system that meets the specific needs of the musician and the performance environment. Considerations such as range, frequency range, battery life, and durability are crucial when selecting a wireless instrument system for professional use.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this transmitter fit into the surface plug on an Ibanez SR
Answer: It also work with a 9V battery , Model: 6F22
Question: Does it have a headphone jack so that it can be used without an amp for practice
Answer: With guitars this short, you're better off tuning it higher. It'll maintain string tension better from my understanding. I think it's usually a fourth higher. Like having a capo at the 5th fret of a standard guitar. So the 1 and 6 strings are tuned to A rather than E.
Question: Would two sets of these work for a guitar>pedal board> amp? To make a fully wire less rig
Answer: Depends on his height. If he’s a bit small or standard height for his age, it will be great. If he’s big for his age, it might be s gamble.
Question: How natural does this sound on a fine acoustic guitar using a piezzo/preamped pickup like fishman or lr baggs
Answer: It dose not have a truss rod

Question: Can the pir sensor be used as a door sensor as well? i don’t need a motion sensor but i do need two doors to have sensors. can i use a camera with it
Answer: The pir sensor can be used as a door sensor (its uses motion to go off). If you can find them. They also sell additional door sensors separately. Yes you can use a camera, but it has to be compatible with the system. (I haven't found one yet).

User questions & answers

Question: if i want to buy 4 devices ,can you send me 4 frequencies
Answer: I don't believe so. As you cannot change frequencies For this product.
Question: Does it work for a mic c
Answer: I don't think it would. The only connectors it comes with are specific for guitar or bass and the connection to the transmitter.
Question: Does it come with a pouch (or a bag) to hold the transmitter? Thanks
Answer: It does not but I got one on Ebay with a great Velcro twin strap but the caveat is the mini XLR is in the center of the transmitter pack but it's a good "Friction-fit" and has never come out with the tab tucked in... It was $13.00 and worth every cent... Easy to swap between swaps or add to your belt if you switch guitars a lot during play... It's just as easy to drop it in your back pocket however- and that's free...
Question: I am currently using a PT45 in a small gym/studio to teach aerobics..will this one work with the headset as well? is the headset compatible
Answer: As long as the headset has a "mini XLR" connector, it will work perfectly with this. There is a gain control just underneath the battery cover to control the output signal as well, but I get plenty with it on it's lowest setting with a guitar anyway. Another cool feature is the battery cover can be used as a mini flat head screw driver specifically for adjusting the signal output. Pretty convenient because that way you don't have to bust out an actual screwdriver just to make a small adjustment if you ever need to. One thing to watch though, if you're getting the red "clipping" light on the receiver every time to transmit a signal, turn the output signal all the way down on the transmitter because they come factory up at about 80%. If you still get the red clipping light at the lowest transmitter setting, you may want to exchange it for a different one. I had to do this with my first one because it was just wired too hot from the factory; the replacement I got has worked perfectly ever since! One more thing, keep the output level on the receiver turned all the way up, this has no effect on the clipping, but effects the signal output directly in that you may experience signal loss if you don't have it up all the way. I think they say this in the set up guide that comes with it, but I missed that part until I emailed the technician about my issue with the first unit I had. AKG's technical support is probably the best I've ever dealt with too, I just went to their web site akg.com, went to help, emailed tech support and I had a response from an actual technician within 12 hours. Pretty awesome actually! Hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work on a martin DRS
Answer: if I'm understanding correctly- I think you are asking to chain these... you can have separate sets in your band./ the unit finds its own frequency.to clarify - you plug the transmitter into your guitar. then the receiver will go anywhere at the beginning of your set up-- if you use pedals.if you don't use pedals- the receiver gos straight into your amp. I think you are asking to have 2 sets -- one set from guitar to pedals- then your pedals out to the amp with the other set.(I don't see why this wouldn't work) you really do want to go wireless eh?consider these as one looong cord. the transmitter is one end of the cord (guitar) the receiver is the other. either amp/ or pedal board/effects board.. etc..the only issue I see with that set up is a delay before your mix gets to the amp. I have a feeling there will be a little bit.
Question: If i wanted to plug it into a 110 volt wall outlet to charge instead of usb, what would i need to get to adapt from usb to the wall without frying it
Answer: I charge mine after every gig--- takes about 20 minutes- I am not going to test it to see how long it lasts.. so far 4 hours and it didn't die..id think 7 hours is about a safe limit- if you play 2 gigs in one day you can charge in between with ease. uses a usb connection just like your cell phone, charge it in the car/van on the way to next gig.
Question: Do these add any noise to the signal compared to cable noise or are these quieter
Answer: I have 4 acoustic guitars all with powered/battery pickups. So when I purchased the Xvive U2 I was skeptical. When the U2 arrived I put it through extensive testing. All 3 of my Taylor guitars (814, 855 &LKSM-12) have the ES2 pickup and they worked perfectly with no background noise or interference . Connections we're made into a Mackie Fx12 mixer. My Gibson classical nylon, equipped with a C-1 with a L.R. Baggs Anthem, had a background hum making it unusable with the Xvive. So it may depend upon which powered pickup you have. I ordered a second U2 transmitter so I could switch guitars through the same receiver and it works just fine.
Question: How long do you charge for and at what voltage
Answer: For sure, however, I recommend you buy a second one after you buy your 30th guitar. But be careful the female of the species seems to notice when you buy a new one. So here’s what I did: I came home with a new guitar and the wife said “did you buy a new guitar?” I said no. She said” I’ve never seen that one before”. I replied “hold on I’ll be right back to explain”. Then I went to the garage and brought in another new guitar. I told her “ no I bought two new guitars!” Do this a couple of times and she won’t be so upset when you only buy 1 new guitar. I’ve also heard “ how many guitars do you need, you can only play one at a time”. To which I reply “ I don’t know but I’m gonna find out”. She says if I buy one more she’s gonna leave. Damn, I’m gonna miss her!!!

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use more than 2 of these on same stage
Answer: I have an acoustic with active pickups and it works fine. Works fine on my passive electric pickups too.
Question: Can I use this from mixer to powered speakers for audio and live voice? Wanna get rid of cables to speakers
Answer: Never tried that before and not sure it will work, but worth a try.
Question: Do they work with a guitar with active pickups
Answer: We do not suggest to leave them in charging too long, because this will harm the battery, and also there is a safety risk as always. Actually speaking, there is power indicator LED lights on the back side, which will remind you when it is in lower power and need charging, or it is full and no need charging any more, so that you will not forget to charge them, or over-charging them.
Question: can you use 4 sets of these at same time? when we try more than 3 we get interference
Answer: The manual shows an example of 1 receiver and 4 guitar pedals (w/transmitter), implying a practical multi transmitter setup. If 1 receiver is used, and multiple transmitters are connected on the same channel (ex, 1 bass, 1 uke, 1 violin all on channel 3) as long as they're not used simultaneously, would they function properly?

User questions & answers

Question: Is this model the one with the rechargeable battery included
Answer: Mine did not include any batteries, I don't believe, but if so, they weren't rechargeable. The transmitter takes two AA batteries. The receiver plugs in with a power adapter.
Question: Does this work for clipping onto a flute and miking the mouthpiece
Answer: This is the best wireless mic I have used in years. It clips directly onto the bell of my saxes. For the clarinet I had to take a marching lyre and modify it so that I could clip the mic to that attachment. You may have to do something similar so that it will work with a flute. But it would be worth the effort. Tom
Question: Whats better the H9 or the H
Answer: I have the H10, but I believe that the H9 comes with "rack mount" hardware. Otherwise I think they are approximately the same.
