The tuner can judge the tone based on these vibration frequencies; and compare this frequency with the correct frequency. So the vibration is the key to the tuning, and you'd need a place on the instrument to clip the tuner on and to detect the vibration, clip on the strongest vibrating part of your instrument, it can make the tuner more sensitive to detect vibration and ensure your instrument is accurately tuned. Question:	Does it produce sound at all? Can it be used as a teaching tool to show high and low pitched sounds
Answer:	Hi, it is chromatic, so it will work on pretty much any instrument as long as it can detect the vibration, which means it will identify all of the notes within its range (guitar, bass, violin, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and dulcimer). but you will need to know the target pitches (notes) of the strings you are tuning because it won't tell you like a guitar-specific or ukulele-specific tuner would. Is the end of your dulcimer's neck 1" thick ? The tuner can't clamp much more than that and it's designed to clamp on to work. Many dulcimers have thick ends but might have a thinner part closer to the nut. You'd need a place on the instrument to clip the tuner on. The vibration is the key to the tuning.
