14 best classical guitar pickups
Classical guitar pickups are electronic devices designed to amplify the sound of a classical or nylon-string acoustic guitar. They are part of guitar bass accessories and are used to capture and reproduce the natural acoustic tones of the instrument when connected to an amplifier or sound system. Here's what you should know about classical guitar pickups:
Purpose: Classical guitar pickups are used to make the sound of a classical or nylon-string guitar audible in larger venues, recording studios, or live performances. Unlike electric guitars, classical guitars have hollow bodies, and their sound is not naturally suited for high-volume amplification.
Types of Pickups: There are several types of pickups available for classical guitars:
- Under-Saddle Pickup: This type is installed underneath the guitar's saddle and picks up vibrations from the strings. It is a common choice for its ability to capture the nuances of the instrument's tone.
- Soundboard Transducer: These pickups are mounted on the guitar's soundboard (top), capturing the vibrations of the entire top plate. They can provide a warmer and more natural tone.
- Microphone Pickups: Some players prefer using external microphones placed near the guitar to capture the sound. These microphones can be either clip-on or stand-mounted.
Installation: Classical guitar pickups can be professionally installed or come in DIY kits for players who are comfortable with basic guitar maintenance.Professional installation typically involves routing a hole in the guitar body for the pickup to be placed inside.
Preamp: To match the impedance and tonal characteristics of the pickup, a preamp is often used. It helps shape the sound and provides volume control. Some pickups have built-in preamps, while others require an external one.
Output: Classical guitar pickups generally have a standard 1/4-inch output jack, allowing them to connect to amplifiers, mixers, or sound systems. Some models also come with additional features like tone controls and EQ adjustments.
Tone and Sound: The choice of pickup can significantly influence the tone of the amplified classical guitar. Under-saddle pickups tend to provide a clear and balanced sound, while soundboard transducers may produce a warmer and more resonant tone.
Feedback Control: One challenge with amplifying classical guitars is the potential for feedback at higher volumes. Some pickups and preamps include feedback control features to mitigate this issue.
Recording: Classical guitar pickups are also used in recording studios to capture the instrument's sound with precision. They can be connected to audio interfaces or mixers for high-quality recording sessions.
In summary, classical guitar pickups are essential accessories for amplifying the sound of nylon-string acoustic guitars. They come in various types, each with its own tonal characteristics, and are commonly used in both live performances and recording settings to reproduce the rich and nuanced tones of classical guitars through amplifiers or sound systems.

The Award winning Anthem series, featuring our patent pending TRU MIC technology, seamlessly combines a proprietary condenser microphone with our acclaimed Element pickup to deliver the warmth and fidelity of a studio mic'd guitar anywhere you perform. At the heart of the Anthem is a revolutionary microphone engineered to capture a dynamic studio mic'd sound for any live performance. The TRU•MIC mounts to the underside of the bridge plate and hovers just 3 mm above its surface to take advantage of the PZM or "boundary" effect. This proprietary mounting system, combined with noise cancellation, frees the mic to perform as if it were outside of the guitar in a studio and maintain remarkable feedback suppression for the stage. The result is a balanced frequency response with excellent clarity for the purest sound you have ever heard amplified. We have paired the Element pickup with the TRU MIC to provide solidity and punch for low frequencies.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have both a Lundberg Lute and a Carlo Greco classical guitar - which of your pick-ups would be my best bet for use on both these vintage instruments |
Answer: | Our Feather Pickup System would work ideal for both of those particular instruments. |
Question: | I need to amplify for live gigs a few acoustic instruments (a charango, bandurria, a banjolele and a banjo). Would this be good for that application |
Answer: | If you are thinking of switching from instrument to instrument within same gig it could be a problem - I would think about getting a really good instrument mike and they make a low mike stand which I find useful since I'm not tall and regular mike stands too high. For each instrument you have to find the sweet spot for the Feather pickup so placement varies - during a live gig I have reservations if you are planning to use a single pickup between various instruments.... hope this helps |
Question: | Does this require a battery |
Answer: | Hi there, Yes, this item requires a 3v battery. Luckily, the product already comes with one included. Hope this helps. Daniel |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have a built-in tuner |
Answer: | Not really but there is a mic gain control that you could max out. |
Question: | Does this have a truss rod |
Answer: | Hi there, Yes there is a mic volume potentiometer that will let you set the amount of mic signal to be blended with the pickup. As much as I know, you don't need a graphic EQ, 'cause this pickup is recommended to be used with Para DI which already has all the EQ corrections you need on stage. |
Question: | Is it available in a left-handed model |
Answer: | One 1/2" hole for the endpin jack, and a small 3/32" hole at the bottom of the saddle slot to insert the pickup sensor. Here is a link to the installation manual, for your reference:http://www.lrbaggs.com/sites/default/files/pdf/anthemsl_install_manual.pdf |

User questions & answers
Question: | What gig bag do you recommend for this |
Answer: | Cordoba 1/4 Size Guitar Gig Bag is the exact match. I bought one from sweetwater for 50$. |
Question: | Is there a truss rod |
Answer: | There’s a truss rod and a key comes with it. One thing to bear in mind is that unlike the mini, This doesn’t ship with a case or bag. |
Question: | Is this guitar recommended only with Nylon strings |
Answer: | Definitely. Steel strings are a no-noon a classical guitar because the tension pull of the steel strings exceeds the design strength of the top. Classical guitars have thinner tops and lighter bracing under the top for reinforcement. Steel strings will eventually warp the top and cause the bridge to pull up. It also sounds bad. Get a smaller scale steel string guitar if you wish to playonsteel strings. Cheers. |
Question: | My mini guitar was strung with Savarez strings- what kind of savarez? There are many types -I love the strings & want to get a backup set- tension |
Answer: | The strings on the Mini II EB-CE are Savarez 500CJ high tension Corum strings. They are good, but you might want to give Savarez Cantiga Premium 510AJP a try. They are amazing strings and sound wonderful on this guitar. Sincerely, Daniel Calido Guitars |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a lot of noise since you can't put a feedback plug in the guitar? Also, can i plug it directly into my Line6 amp(4 electric guitar |
Answer: | Feedback would depend on your situation, proximity to speakers, size of room, volume level, etc. I never use feedback plug because that's never an issue for us. Yes, you can plug into any amp or preamp. It doesn't have a lot of volume by itself being a passive pickup, so I would recommend plugging into an amp or preamp if going directly into a system. |
Question: | Has anyone compared this to the "XL" version, is it worth the price difference |
Answer: | The XL is only different in that it has adjustable pole pieces to balance your string outputs. These lower cost "portable" pickup solutions are not EVER the best sounding, BUT if you purchase an external acoustic guitar PRE-AMP you will find the resulting sound competes with the $300-$400 acoustic/electric guitar setups which always employ a built-in preamp. Then the only drawback as I see it would be esthetics. That's the tradeoff for using a temporary or portable pickup. In my considered opinion a preamp is a must. AND as with all acoustic guitar setups, use an amplifier Fender, Fishman, AER, Marshall, Boss, etc designed for acoustic guitar. Reason being that, Electric Guitar Amps are not generally designed to amplify sounds over 5KHZ. An acoustic guitar should run through an amp designed to reproduce 7KHZ+ faithfully! No acoustic pickup sounds very good running through an electric guitar amplifier. Conclusion. Want this or any pickup on your acoustic to shine; Buy the pickup of your choice, an in-line external preamp and an Acoustic Guitar Amplifier. You may have to drop about $1000 in the long run, but you'll have a lifetime of LOUD Acoustic Guitar Joy my friend! |
Question: | Can I use it on the little Martin Lxk |
Answer: | The Woody HC is designed to fit "into standard 3.75" (94mm) to 4" (100mm) sound holes." If the Martin has a sound hole within this range, it should fit. Instructions are included it the packaging. If you don't know the sound hole dimensions, check with Martin. |
Question: | Can this be installed and easily removed when needed? thanks |
Answer: | Yes, it is very easy to install and remove. |

Answer: | Yes, GGP-01 guitar pickup need an amp |
Question: | Does the 1/4 output have a metric or a standard thread on the outside? I am interested in installing an adapter in there but need to know tread size |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | If this is being used as a replacement piezoelectric pickup it would install under the bridge and not be glued to the body |
Answer: | It can work, but it is better to install piezoelectric pickups. It is not recommended not to install piezoelectric pickups |
Question: | Mic knob on this and blend on other systems work the same...piezo always on, "blend" in the amount of mic u want. Hope it helps |
Answer: | Hello and thank you for asking this question. NG-2 is a portable piezo pickup designed to work with nylon-string guitars, which have a standard for most models of this type bridge with a tie bar. It slides into the opened loops formed by attaching the strings to the tie bar, and then locked in place by the pressure of the strings when they are retuned to standard. The pickup has built-in volume control for easy adjustment directly from the stage. SG-1 is a portable piezo pickup designed to work with steel-string acoustic guitars. It will easily fit on the standard bridge of such a guitar, sliding it between the saddle and the bridge pins. There is no built-in volume control. |
Product description
The Pure Mini is a transducer-only system. No battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. Don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. The Pure Systems are definitely different. They sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and PA systems directly, without a preamp! Advantages of the Pure Guitar System The special Pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. Each of the 3 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. The Pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do NOT sound percussive or harsh. The Pure System reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. The Pure System sounds great just in passive mode! Unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive PURE system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. Feedback Resistance How safe is the Pure System with feedback? Due to the Pure System's location on the bridge plate under the bridge, feedback resistance is comparable to under-saddle transducers. Technically, a pickup installed in or on the bridge is a lot less likely to feedback than one which is attached to the open sound board. The 1/8" thin sound board can act like a diaphragm and vibrate along with loud sound-signals from speaker cabinets. This is the kind of feedback you experience on an acoustic guitar. The thicker bridge area is a lot harder to be set into vibration from an outside source simply because of its mass. In our tests with both, steel string and classic guitars equipped with an under-saddle pickup plus the Pure System, we were able to achieve about the same gain-before-feedback with both systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work on a three string mountain dulcimer |
Answer: | If you are building a fulcimer, I think so, otherwise I don't know how you would install it. They are mounted under the bridge plate ( superglued). UNLESS you are building the instrument, I don't know how you would install it. You also have to drill the jack mount to the end of the dulcimer. I own a 4 string dulcimer and there is no way to install. |
Question: | I removed a k&k, one of the super glued heads was ruined. can i get good response with 2 heads only? maybe on a small guitar of uke |
Answer: | You still should get sound. I am not sure how good it will be. I have not had any experience with this. |
Question: | Is this a good option for a big guitar such as a Martin HD28V? I am under the impression that this is for smaller guitars |
Answer: | No, it will work fine in your HD28V - I put one in an HD28 and it sounded great. The mini captures the true essence of your guitar and every one I've installed (mostly in my own guitars), has sounded full and balanced. |
Question: | How do you install this |
Answer: | It is installed by applying superglue to the pick ups and gluein them to the bridge plate inside the guitar. It comes with a set up jig and some putty to make sure everything is aligned properly. An average do it yourselfer should be able to accomplish this project, but a luthier would probably do it for around $50. They do sound great by the way in my custom 28. |
