9 best yamaha brass practice mutes

Yamaha brass practice mutes are specialized musical instrument accessories designed for brass players, particularly those who play instruments like trumpets, trombones, and French horns. These mutes are used to lower the volume and alter the timbre of the instrument, allowing musicians to practice quietly without disturbing others while maintaining a reasonable approximation of their instrument's natural sound. Here are some key details about Yamaha brass practice mutes:

  1. Sound Reduction: These mutes are primarily used to reduce the volume of the brass instrument. They achieve this by partially blocking the airflow inside the instrument, resulting in a quieter sound when played.

  2. Practice Convenience: Brass practice mutes are particularly useful for brass players who need to practice in situations where loud playing is not feasible, such as in apartments, shared living spaces, or late at night.

  3. Design and Materials: Yamaha practice mutes are typically constructed from materials like aluminum or plastic. They are lightweight and easy to insert into the instrument's bell.

  4. Different Types: Yamaha offers various types of practice mutes tailored to specific brass instruments, including trumpets, trombones, and French horns. Each type is designed to fit the specific shape and size of the instrument's bell.

  5. Sound Quality: While practice mutes significantly reduce the volume, they do not completely silence the instrument. Musicians can still hear the sound they produce, allowing for effective practice and technique improvement.

  6. Intonation and Resistance: Quality practice mutes, like those from Yamaha, are designed to maintain proper intonation and resistance as closely as possible to the instrument's natural state, ensuring that practicing with a mute remains musically beneficial.

  7. Durability: Yamaha is known for producing high-quality musical instrument accessories, and their practice mutes are typically durable and built to withstand regular use.

  8. Versatility: Some Yamaha practice mutes may have adjustable features to fine-tune the level of sound reduction, allowing musicians to find the right balance between volume reduction and playing feel.

In summary, Yamaha brass practice mutes are valuable tools for brass musicians who need to practice quietly without compromising on the quality of their practice sessions. They provide a convenient way to work on technique, exercises, and musical pieces without disturbing others, making them an essential accessory for brass players seeking versatility and adaptability in their practice routines.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used with a Yamaha tenor trombone
Answer: Yes...this will work great...
Question: Will this work with the jiggs pbone plastic trombone (pbone is distributed worldwide by conn-selmer
Answer: Here is a link to Yamaha showing the Yamaha models this will work on. These are pretty much standard in size bells and work on my brands of trombones, The bell size for your pbone is 8" and I don't see where you would have a problem. https://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical_instruments/winds/silent_brass/silent_brass/compatibility_table.html#product-tabs
Question: Will this mute work with Bach trombones
Answer: I have a Bach and yes it works.
Question: What is the difference between this (sb5x2) and the sb5xc model? (not the sb5x, which mrsilvertrumpet explains already, but the model with the "c
Answer: Yamaha never came out with a SB5XC. Prior to the SB5X series was the SB59 and then later the SB59C. The "C" stood for an extra 1/8" male to 1/8" male cable that Yamaha provided so that you could hook up your CD or MP3 player to the ST9 Module. When the SB5X model come out the still included this extra cable. So the SB5X has the extra cable the and the SB5X-2 does not. Again, Yamaha never listed the new SB5X with a C. If you are see that somewhere, it is a seller that has created that that model number not Yamaha. I am a authorized dealer with Yamaha for 14 years and know this particular product line very well.

User questions & answers

Question: is any case for it
Answer: Right handed
Question: Would this fit a Bass Trombone
Answer: Right handed
Question: Will it affect the placement of where your hand goes
Answer: It’s a little thinner depth-wise, about 1 and 5/8 inches as opposed to 1 and 7/8, so it’s not an issue. I put a standard pick guard from Warmoth on mine and it fit fine.
Question: What's the difference between the x2 and the xc models
Answer: This is the HT (hard tail) model. That means no tremolo. Strings thread through the bridge on top...not through the body like a tremolo model.

User questions & answers

Question: How heavy is the mute? Is it uncomfortable? I remember that being a complaint about the old versions
Answer: Just buy two mutes
Question: Whats the biggest bell size this fits into
Answer: I can't vouch for Amazon's description that might have implied that this would work on bass trombone but Denis Wick recommends its DW5509 mute for use on bass t-bone.
Question: Will this model (sb5xc) fit both tenor and bass trombone
Answer: Hey Josh, this mute comes about 1.5 inches out of my conn 88h bell, so it usually wouldn't fit in most cases, unless you're using a gig bag I imagine.
Question: My daughter is in the 4th grade and brand new to band. Will the mute interfere with her beginner learning? I'm nocturnal. We need something
Answer: Yes. This mute fits perfectly in a large bore F-attachment trombone.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this work with a flugelhorn
Answer: They're huge... I don't have an exact measurement right now but I put them on a 2000 F150 and I only had 3 options: (BARELY) fit it on the outside of the frame, put it in the bed, or put it on the roof. If you have an SUV, don't expect to put it underneath the vehicle. I was barely able to make it fit under my pickup truck. I had a centimeter or two that allowed me to fit it where I have it. It's gigantic and the amount of noise reflects its size.
Question: Is it possible to record while playing
Answer: I have a better air solenoid.I'll look up the part number.support ring no
Question: Does it still have the concert hall and church reverb features as the old one
Answer: Yes, I used a 3/8' NPT threaded air solenoid valve from truck parts dealer, using a 3/8" female reducing adapter to match the threads on the horn air inlet. Even with the slight restriction in size down from 3/8" line and fittings to the smaller threaded hole size on the horn set it works GREAT. Of course, I'm using Vi-Air compressor set to shut off at up to 200 psi. They will make bystanders swear there is a train about to run over them.
Question: What's the difference between the st9, sb79c, sb7xc, and sb7x
Answer: It's rated 140db. At 120psi it vibrates the ground under my truck! They are awesome.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth buying this mute without the personal studio system with the sb7x model
Answer: Yes. The mute goes in the bell like any other mute then a wire goes from the mute to the amp then to headphones. I find I end up just hooking my fingers around the bottom edge of the bell. It’s different to play with but I really like mine for needing to be quiet. Most ppl can’t hear me from the next room.
Question: Does anyone know if this fits Tromba plastic flugelhorns
Answer: I notice that the release dates of the two models are about 2.5 years apart. (Feb 2014 and Nov 2016) The precise difference is unclear to me, but perhaps the newer model has improvements. Read the specifications on each- the release date is at the end.
Question: Audio coming out of the headphone, right ear is louder than left ear, is it expected
Answer: It should work for your 14" wok. Remember the wok ring is reversible so you have two options to choose from.
Question: anyone know a cable that can be used from the Aux port to a USB port for a mac? my daughter wants to record her practice sessions
Answer: NO, they can not work on an induction cooktop.
Question: Is the silent brass mute Bluetooth enabled
Answer: I have a glass top electric stove and the ring works but it can slip on the glass surface so you need to be aware of that and take care. You are cooking at high temperature with hot oil.
Question: What's the difference between the x2 and the xc models
Answer: I purchased this reversible size Wok rack, it has worked exceptionally well. My Wok is 16” once reversing the rack it appears a 2” smaller diameter Wok should fit nicely. Best wishes

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work with my cornet
Answer: The model I have is not Bluetooth enabled.
Question: They have availability used
Answer: The "C" stands for "cable", the xc model has an extra cable that can be utilized to connect the STX module to an auxiliary source such as a MP3/CD player. It has a 1/8 jack on both ends of the cable. The x2 model came out when Yamaha released the SB1X Silent Brass for Tuba and SB2X Silent Brass for Euphonium models, which came out around Oct of 2016. There were some technical changes to the STX module to accommodate these two new instruments. So the “2” basically stands for 2nd generation of the STX module. The xc units are now the obsolete item and is no longer produced. The x2 units no longer have the extra cable but have the upgraded STX module. This module change would effect a person that might consider purchasing additional mutes (primarily Tuba & Euphonium) to use with their existing STX module.
Question: what audio cable does it use? I lost my headphones and i want to get an adapter
Answer: No it did not come with a case.
Question: Does it output the exact sound i make
Answer: Possibly it would, but I would be concerned about affecting tuning. I believe they sell a trombone version.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the odds that this would work with a mellophone
Answer: Yes, that is normal. As you would hear yourself more in your right (bell side)ear. It was a bit odd at first, but you get used to it. I will sometimes only leave the right side earbud in, in case I need to hear something in the house while practicing.
Question: Can I use this with the electronics for the silent brass trumpet
Answer: I haven't heard of one.
