9 best french horn mutes
French horn mutes are essential accessories for brass musicians, particularly those who play the French horn. Mutes are used to alter the sound produced by the instrument, creating different tonal qualities and effects. Here are some common types of French horn mutes:
Straight Mute: The straight mute is the most basic type of mute. It is a conical or cylindrical mute that is inserted into the bell of the French horn. This mute produces a muted, slightly nasal sound, often used for special musical effects.
Cup Mute: A cup mute has a cup-shaped design and is placed in the bell of the French horn. It produces a warmer, mellow sound compared to the straight mute and is often used for expressive playing in jazz and some orchestral music.
Plunger Mute: Plunger mutes are similar to those used in the trumpet or trombone. They are typically made of rubber and create a distinctive wah-wah effect when manipulated over the bell. This effect is often used in jazz music.
Stop Mute: The stop mute, also known as a horn stop mute, is a mute with a stopper that can be adjusted to control the level of muting. It allows the player to vary the muted sound from very subtle to more pronounced.
Practice Mute: Practice mutes are designed to reduce the volume of the French horn significantly, allowing players to practice without disturbing others. They are often made of metal or rubber and are commonly used by horn players in apartments or other shared living spaces.
Bucket Mute: A bucket mute resembles a small bucket or cup and is placed over the bell. It produces a muted, warm tone and is commonly used in jazz and some orchestral pieces.
Velvet Mute: Velvet mutes are covered with velvet or similar fabric, which gives them a softer and less metallic sound. They are used for special tonal effects in specific musical pieces.
Fiber Mute: Fiber mutes are made from a composite material and are designed to produce a clear, focused tone with minimal alteration to the overall timbre of the instrument.
French horn mutes are valuable tools for horn players, allowing them to create a diverse range of sounds and effects to suit different musical styles and compositions. These mutes are often used in orchestras, chamber ensembles, and jazz bands to add variety and expression to the music.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the dw5554 FrenchHorn mute come with a mute bag |
Answer: | Yes, it will cover/fit the French Horn red and white mute. Don't know if it would work for a trumpet straight or cup mute. |
Question: | Does this fit/work well in a Conn 8D |
Answer: | I haven’t had the opportunity to find out. But I suppose a coat of scotch guard couldn’t hurt? |
Question: | Does it come with a bag |
Answer: | My slide (1962 Conn 6H) is about 10 cm wide (OD). The case fits this dimension. My slide is 75 cm from outside of curved end of slide (not counting the tip at the end) to outside of the crossmember closest to the mouthpiece (72 cm on the spec list at Crossrock site?). I had to cut some of the styrofoam at the crossemember end to make my slide fit. I don't think I cut 3 cm away, but the slide is now a tight fit, which is fine with me (I suspected this would be necessary when I ordered the case, and crossed my fingers that I could make it work). I do not know if your 79 cm dimension is the overall length of the slide, including the bell attachment. This dimension is unimportant for fit of the case. The tube extensions (mouthpiece, bell attachment) have no restrictions. The restriction is the crossmember. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter and length |
Answer: | The "C" stands for "cable", the xc model has an extra cable that can be utilized to connect the STX module to an auxiliary source such as a MP3/CD player. It has a 1/8 jack on both ends of the cable. The x2 model came out when Yamaha released the SB1X Silent Brass for Tuba and SB2X Silent Brass for Euphonium models, which came out around Oct of 2016. There were some technical changes to the STX module to accommodate these two new instruments. So the âÂÂ2â basically stands for 2nd generation of the STX module. The xc units are now the obsolete item and is no longer produced. The x2 units no longer have the extra cable but have the upgraded STX module. This module change would effect a person that might consider purchasing additional mutes (primarily Tuba & Euphonium) to use with their existing STX module. |

A microphone inside the mute captures your sound and sends it to the Personal Studio receiver. Plug in the included earbuds or your own favorite headphones to hear yourself at full volume.
Amazingly natural sound
Yamaha added digital technology to make the sound you hear in the headphones incredibly realistic, just like what you'd expect if you were playing normally. It's so natural you might even forget you're using a mute at all!
Play along with your favorite songs

User questions & answers
Question: | is any case for it |
Answer: | Right handed |
Question: | Would this fit a Bass Trombone |
Answer: | Right handed |
Question: | Will it affect the placement of where your hand goes |
Answer: | It’s a little thinner depth-wise, about 1 and 5/8 inches as opposed to 1 and 7/8, so it’s not an issue. I put a standard pick guard from Warmoth on mine and it fit fine. |
Question: | What's the difference between the x2 and the xc models |
Answer: | This is the HT (hard tail) model. That means no tremolo. Strings thread through the bridge on top...not through the body like a tremolo model. |
