14 best cajon drums
Cajon drums are a type of percussion instrument that originated in Peru and have since gained popularity worldwide. They are related to the category of musical instruments, particularly hand percussion and drums percussion. Here's what you need to know about cajon drums:
Origin and History: The cajon drum's roots can be traced back to Afro-Peruvian music, where it was developed during the colonial period. It was initially constructed from wooden crates and used as a versatile rhythm instrument.
Design: A cajon typically has a box-shaped design, resembling a wooden crate or a small rectangular drum. It is usually made from hardwood, such as birch or mahogany, and features a soundhole on the rear or one of the sides.
Playing Technique: To play a cajon, a musician sits on top of the drum and strikes the front surface with their hands or fingers to produce a variety of sounds and rhythms. Different parts of the cajon's front panel can produce bass tones, snare-like sounds, and high-pitched tones, depending on where and how it's struck.
Versatility: Cajon drums are versatile percussion instruments suitable for various musical genres. They are commonly used in flamenco, Latin, acoustic, and world music, but their adaptability allows them to be incorporated into many different styles and musical ensembles.
Sound: The sound of a cajon drum is characterized by its rich and warm tones. The deep bass tones are produced by striking the center of the front panel, while the snare-like sound comes from the interaction between the player's hands and the internal snare wires or strings.
Accessories: Some cajon drums come with adjustable features, such as built-in snare mechanisms that can be adjusted to change the snare sound's intensity. Additionally, accessories like cajon brushes and pedals can be used to further expand the instrument's sonic possibilities.
Popularity: Cajon drums have gained popularity not only for their musical versatility but also for their portability. Musicians appreciate their compact design, making them easy to transport and suitable for both stage performances and casual jam sessions.
DIY Cajons: Many musicians and enthusiasts build their cajon drums, allowing for customization of size, materials, and sound characteristics. DIY cajon kits are available for those interested in crafting their percussion instrument.
Global Influence: Cajon drums have transcended their Peruvian origins and are now used worldwide by musicians in a wide range of musical contexts. They have become a staple in many acoustic and world music ensembles.
Learning and Playing: Learning to play the cajon can be accessible to musicians of various skill levels. There are instructional resources, tutorials, and lessons available to help beginners get started and more experienced players refine their skills.
Cajon drums have a unique and captivating sound that adds depth and rhythm to various musical compositions.Whether you're a professional musician or a casual enthusiast, the cajon offers a fun and creative way to explore percussion and rhythm in your music.

Anyone can do this
It's pronounced "ka-HONE" (and while we're at it, you say Meinl like "MINE-ull").
You're now halfway to playing your first groove on this cajon. The rest is all about hand placement.
If you're booking coffeehouses, playing houses of worship, heading out to an open mic night or ALWAYS up for a casual jam session, it's a sure bet that lower volume percussion is going to save everyone's ears.
And cajons are the solution for laying down grooves that fit the mix of these situations.
Time to play
Sitting down on the cajon with the playing surface between your legs (the one with our logo on it), reach down and strike toward the center of it with your whole hand.
That punchy, low note thud you hear will be your bass zone. Hard to forget.
Moving your hands closer to the top corners, strike the surface in a slapping motion using only the length of your fingers for a cracking snare drum sound.
Combine the two motions any way you want to create grooves.
Anyone can do this—regardless of skill.
Baltic birch playing surface
Baltic birch is used in drum set manufacturing for its boosted levels of highs and punchy lows, along with superb projection and articulation—perfect for a wood cajon.
We chose Baltic birch for the playing surface and carefully made it thin enough to respond to soft finger rolls and brush playing while ensuring it's durable enough to endure heavy back beats and fast, choppy rhythms.
Taking the touch of this cajon a step further, the playing surface is sanded and shaped together with the resonating body to form a perfectly flush, 1-to-1 match. Each resonating body has a playing surface made just for it.
Internal snare wires
We took traditional coiled stainless steel snare wires—the same type used on snare drums—and fixed them to the inside of this cajon.
Two sets of these snare wires are positioned to rest on the back side of the playing surface, making your notes extra responsive and clear with a crisp snare effect.
These snares are a big part of what makes the Meinl Jam Cajon perfect for replicating drum set rhythms in acoustic settings.
Rear sound port
A 4" circular sound port is cut into the back side of the Baltic birch resonating body to give you more articulation, a brighter attack and punchy bass notes.
This port also allows air to escape the cajon as you play. With air and sound waves flowing effortlessly from inside the cajon, you're left with a crystal clear percussive response at all dynamic levels.
When extra amplification is needed, the sound port is the perfect spot to place a microphone.

How to get more gigs
Maybe your new band is just starting out.
Frequenting open mic nights—or any building/house/structure with an open stage and a living, breathing audience—is one sure-fire way to get your original material out there.
BUT, there are usually a few common problems with these places—drum set volume, cramped space and lack of time for setup and tear down.
Even if you're the master of dynamics and drum kit ergonomics, a quieter, reliable and fun percussion instrument will often be a better option.
With The Meinl Snare Cajon and Bag Combo, you're able to take on more drum set prohibitive venues and still lay down your same grooves and parts. And who knows, your first (or next) big booking could come from playing these types of gigs.
We do know that the more you play, the more chances you have, and being able to cater your volume and dynamics to quieter spaces will directly impact your audience reach—especially in the beginning.
This cajon plays like a drum set
It's all about hand placement.
With deep and punchy bass notes toward the middle of the playing surface and higher pitched cracking snare close to the top corners, it's easy to sit down and immediately replicate your drum set grooves.
Anyone can enjoy it
The Meinl snare cajon and bag combo is perfect for acoustic music, houses of worship, casual jam sessions, unplugged rehearsals or recording sessions.

The Meinl Jumbo Subwoofer Cajon features a forward projecting sound port in place of the traditional rear facing style and an internal reflex channel. This results in an enhanced bass note projection, particularly desirable for live and unplugged situations. Fixed internal snare wires deliver a crisp and cutting sound that enhances corner slaps and adds a touch of contrast to bass notes. The Jumbo Bass Cajon is designed to project immensely deep bass tones that swell with harder playing and provide slight punches behind soft notes, responding much like a kick drum. Frontplate: walnut (Juglans regia L.)
- Our biggest and bassiest cajon — with a low end punch that you will feel as soon as you start playing, the Meinl Jumbo Subwoofer Cajon is mammoth in size and sound — the extra wide body with internal bass reflex allows for superb low note development
- Forward-facing ports with internal bass reflex — an internal reflex channel directs sound waves and air out through forward-facing ports to create a bass note that feels like a perfectly tuned kick drum — the tone will completely surround you as you play

All about the _______
A wild guess on what the #1 thing is you look for in a cajon:
super. deep. bass.
We're not talking about a nice thud with decent resonance. We mean the type of low end that you can feel and has the ability to rattle walls.
Think about it—if you brought that kind of power to the stage, you and everyone around you would look at the cajon in an entirely different way. Your drumset-prohibitive gigs would engage on a whole new level.
The cajon CAN be a powerhouse instrument in its own right without stepping over the decibel boundary cajons are meant for.
Using the idea of how a subwoofer boosts low end in a speaker setup, we began work on the Meinl Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon.
Made for acoustic sets, small or large theatres, outdoor shows and houses of worship
Stripped-down gigs or practices are fun because they reveal the inner-workings of songs to where individual parts become crystal clear. From a drummer's standpoint, however, you usually have to sacrifice something to fit the dynamic. But what if you could maintain a solid foundation of kick drum rhythms and crisp snare to really lock-in at any volume level?
Are you looking for a solid, reliable house percussion piece that can carry a group of musicians through a set of music? The Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon is great for being used by many different players in any style of music.
Bass reflex system
Inside the Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon is a bass reflex system that directs sound waves and air through different channels before projecting out from the large, forward-facing sound ports. This gives the frequencies more time to develop inside the body of the cajon, resulting in ultra-low, enhanced bass waves. Think of it as a mechanical subwoofer.
Positioning sound ports on the front envelopes you in a healthy dose of low end tone while projecting your beats directly toward your audience.
For extra amplification, place a microphone by one of the front ports.
Three internal fixed sets of snares
Outfitted with snare wires that respond with a crisp and sensitive snare sound, the Jumbo Bass Subwoofer Cajon allows you to easily execute deep back beats and complex rhythms.
The snares react perfectly to soft finger rolls, ghost notes, and loud back beat slap tones when played near the top corners. They are evenly spaced to fan out against the inside of the walnut playing surface to give you a reactive snare touch wherever you strike.
Walnut playing surface
This is where ALL the sound initially develops, so we had to pick the right material and build it out correctly.
Walnut is used in drum set manufacturing for its even levels of highs, mids and lows. It also creates a wide open sound that is loaded with warmth and depth—perfect for a jumbo-sized bass cajon.
We chose walnut for the playing surface and carefully made it thin enough to respond to soft finger rolls and brush playing while ensuring it's durable enough to endure heavy back beats and fast, choppy rhythms.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this get damaged during shipping? It seems kind of fragile when it comes to being dropped and thrown by shippers because it is a hollow drum |
Answer: | Drilling in the front (playing surface) of a Cajon will affect the tone. If the outer case (box) is plastic, drilling a small hole should have minimal effect on the sound. I love the deep resonance sound this instrument creates. |
Question: | What is Rubber Wood? Is it any different from the regular wood |
Answer: | yes on the MEINL site has parts. |
Question: | What kind of warranty is on this item |
Answer: | Meinl makes a case. It had a sticker on it that showed it as an option. It had to be ordered and was about $45. Really a great case! |
Question: | Just received this yesterday for rehearsals, and noticed that the adjustment wench has no effect on the sound. Could it be broken |
Answer: | Sure, you can use a pedal with almost all but the smallest cajones. |

Percussion for the masses
You've probably seen one watching an acoustic band play or while attending an open mic night. Maybe it was a worship band or an open air concert on your neighbor's front porch.
The cajon—the answer for low volume percussion that can be played by anyone, anywhere. It may seem like just a hollow wooden box on the surface, but wait until you see inside of this one.
Bass and snare
Even if you're NOT a drummer, you might already know that bass drum and snare drum sounds are key elements to creating rhythm. With the two, there are endless beat combinations and styles you can play.
We crafted the Meinl Headliner Series String Cajon to deliver both with precision, dynamics, projection and an outstanding feel—all with the ability to fit right into the mix of acoustic performances.
The best part is these sounds can be made by anyone. Just sit down and play—no special skill is required.
Made for acoustic sets, small or large theatres, outdoor shows and houses of worship
Stripped-down gigs and rehearsals are fun because they reveal the inner-workings of songs to where individual parts become crystal clear. From a drummer's standpoint, however, you usually have to sacrifice something to fit the dynamic. But what if you could maintain a foundation of kick drum rhythms and crisp snare to really lock-in at any volume level?
Are you looking for a solid, reliable house percussion piece that can carry a group of musicians through a set of music? The Meinl Headliner Series String Cajon is great for being used by many different players in any style of music.
Responsive playing surface
The playing surface is made thin to respond to soft finger rolls, ghost notes and even brush playing while being durable enough for heavy back beats and fast, choppy rhythms.
Taking the touch of this cajon a step further, the playing surface is sanded and shaped together with the resonating body to form a perfectly flush, 1-to-1 match.
For every Meinl Headliner Series String Cajon, each resonating body has a playing surface made just for it.
Internal tunable strings for snare effect
If you look through the sound port, you'll see a hex key located on the center post of this cajon. Remove the hex key and turn the two screws located on the bottom of the cajon to adjust tension on the strings.
Tight strings give you a sharp snare drum sound while looser settings deliver a lax snare effect.
These strings are made of micro-coiled steel, similar to guitar strings. The vibrations from your playing activates them to provide a snare sound wherever you strike the playing surface.
Rear sound port
A 5" circular sound port is cut into the back side of the Baltic birch resonating body to allow air flow to escape the cajon as you play.
This gives you enhanced tone with a better feel.
When extra amplification is needed, the sound port is the perfect spot to place a microphone.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the cajon arrive already assembled |
Answer: | This product is extremely durable. I wouldn't be worried about damage during shipping. I have had mine for about four years and have not been gentle with it at all (has been dropped from about shoulder height). The only bit of "damage" that could be said about this is a little bit of crayon in the texturing of the top (so your bum doesn't slip off). My son was about two years old and took a crayon to the top of it. Most of that came off, but there's just a little that has stayed. |
Question: | Is the sound port in the box located in the back or on the side |
Answer: | The resonating body and frontplate are made of Siam Oak (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.-Arg.), which is nicknamed Rubber Wood because it is used in other industries in the production of latex. The wood comes from environmentally controlled wood plantations, which preserve the valuable rain forest eco-system. |
Question: | I weigh 175lbs. Can I sit on it |
Answer: | We provide a 2 year warranty on every item with the exception of heads, shoulder straps, zippers, tuning ropes, cowbell beaters, wood blocks and rattan shakers. |
Question: | Is it good sound and good quality |
Answer: | The adjustment wrench needs to be removed from its storage hole inside the cajon and used on the two allen screws on the bottom of the cajon between the front feet. Each screw tightens or loosens one side of the bar that the strings are mounted to. |

Answer: | No, I don’t believe so. I don’t see any adjustments on mine. |
Question: | Are the fixed snares actually metal snares, like a snare drum? Or are they wooden dowels or guitar strings |
Answer: | This model is not designed with removable snares but we do have other models (SCP100AWA and SCP100WN) that allow you to turn the snares on and off. We also now offer a PA-CAJ cajon preamp that allows you to add a preamp to any of our cajons. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Can I sit on this Cajon? My weight is 175lbs |
Answer: | It's all wooden. Not sure what type. I wouldn't call it compact though. It's pretty big. |
