14 best studio bass guitar
A studio bass guitar, also known as an electric bass guitar, is a musical instrument commonly used in various music genres, including rock, jazz, funk, and more. It is a crucial component of the rhythm section in a band and provides the low-frequency foundation for the music. Here are some key characteristics and information about studio bass guitars:
Design and Construction: Studio bass guitars typically have a solid body made of various materials, including wood (e.g., ash, alder, mahogany) or synthetic materials. They are designed to be lightweight and comfortable for players to handle during extended studio sessions or live performances.
Scale Length: Bass guitars come in various scale lengths, with the most common being the long scale (34 inches) and the short scale (30 inches). The scale length affects the instrument's feel and tone.
Strings: Bass guitars typically have four strings, but five- and six-string models are also common. The number of strings affects the instrument's range and versatility, allowing players to produce lower or higher notes.
Pickups: Most studio bass guitars have magnetic pickups, usually one or two, near the bridge or neck. These pickups capture the vibrations of the strings and convert them into electrical signals that can be amplified.
Tone Control: Bass guitars often feature tone controls (knobs or switches) that allow players to adjust the instrument's tonal characteristics. Common controls include volume, tone, and sometimes a pickup selector switch.
Playing Technique: Bass players use their fingers or a pick to pluck or strike the strings. Fingerstyle playing is common in genres like jazz and funk, while rock and metal players often use a pick for a more aggressive sound.
Amplification: Studio bass guitars are typically played through amplifiers designed specifically for bass instruments. These amplifiers are equipped with features like EQ controls to shape the bass's tone.
Genres: Studio bass guitars are versatile and can be found in a wide range of music genres, from the deep, groovy basslines of funk and soul to the thundering low end of heavy metal.
Accessories: Bass players often use accessories like straps, stands, and effects pedals to enhance their sound and playing experience.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance are essential for keeping a studio bass guitar in good condition. This includes regular string changes, cleaning, and occasional setup adjustments.
Studio bass guitars are a vital part of modern music production and performance, providing the essential low-frequency foundation that drives the rhythm and groove of songs. Bass players often collaborate closely with drummers to create a solid rhythmic foundation for the music, making them an integral part of any musical ensemble.

Yamaha BB-Series Bass Guitars
The latest in Yamaha's storied BB series of bass guitars delivers the superb sound and build quality that this series is known for in a smaller body with even better playability. Featuring a Alder/Maple/Alder construction for quicker transmission of sound from the strings to the body and neck, a firmer 6-bolt miter neck joint for improved stability, and custom-wound pickups that achieve higher output gain while retaining the classic BB voicing, the new lineup of BB basses are a testament to our commitment to musical excellence.
In the BB Series, Yamaha has always sought to offer bassists nothing less than a pure bass guitar. Forgoing passing technical fads in favor in proven technologies and production techniques, every model in the BB Series has been a product of our commitment to creating a bass that allows you to build your own sound rather than defining one for you. These latest models continue this tradition of reliable excellence in superbly crafted bass guitars that you can depend on to give you the sound you need, in any situation you throw at it.
Built for the Working Bassist
We've spent decades working closely with artists to help us forge a clear vision of what working professionals demand of their bass in every capacity. By incorporating this invaluable, real-world experience and insight into practical approaches to the BB series' design, construction, and ultimately its legendary tone, this collaboration has been the impetus behind this iconic instrument's continuing evolution as the hardest working bass in the business.
Penetrating Sound
Yamaha has worked closely with some of the most prolific bassists in the business to craft that unmistakable BB sound— constantly evaluating their ideas and feedback to create the right sound for the music of the moment. The latest series features a miter neck joint that has won praise in the Billy Sheehan Signature/ Attitude Limited III lineup, by increasing the efficiency of vibration transmission to the body for a more resonant, organic feel and tone.
A New Take on a Classic Design
The new lineup has undergone a significant redesign with subtle contour changes and body weight reduction made out of consideration to playability and comfort, while still retaining the classic silhouette of the BB body/ head design. The differences are subtle, but you'll definitely feel them. The new models also feature standard sized pickups for the first time in a BB, for more convenient customization or replacement.
Alder/Maple/Alder Body
The new BB features an Alder/Maple/Alder multi-laminated body construction. The hard maple center increases body stiffness and accentuates midrange to cut through the mix of a band, and allows a more uniform transmission of vibrations between the body and the maple neck for unparalleled resonance and sustain. (BB Pro, BB700 Series).
6-bolt miter neck joint
Miter bolting holds the neck closer and tighter to the body fusing these two separate components into one. Compared to a conventional bolt-on joint, miter bolting offers more efficient transfer of string vibration throughout the body, for improved sustain and outstanding resonance that brings every note to life. (BB Pro, BB700, BB400 Series).
Custom-Wound Pickups
BB's custom-wound pickups fit standard pickup cavities and feature a medium-high output with vintage voicing for great tone in any setting. BB basses come with pickups selected specifically to match the distinct character of each model in the series, delivering a uniquely versatile sound while retaining the classic BB tone.
Convertible Bridge & Saddle
BB basses incorporate 'Diagonal Body Thru Stringing' which significantly reduces stress on the strings while transferring vibration to the body reliably and efficiently. The bridge comes equipped with a convertible saddle that can be adjusted to 2 different angles for more precise tonal shaping and feel.

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this in any way acoustic |
Answer: | It's not really. However, when you plug it into an amplifier it has a piezo pickup which gives it some of the sound qualities of an acoustic instrument. If you use the acoustic version of the headphone amp that the company sells separately you can get even more range of acoustic tones. It is a very sensitive pickup so it's good if you can EQ it through a pedal or the amp, etc. Not really acoustic though obviously with no resonant chamber in the body of the instrument, thus the traveler feature. |
Question: | Does it sound without connecting amp like real acoustic bass |
Answer: | It sounds nothing like an acoustic bass and there is no volume knob on this model. When hooked up you will literally hear every movement you make on this guitar. I practice with my regular bass when I’m at home.. but this traveler is only good for practicing when you’re on the go and don’t wanna bring a rig with you.. I have a Bluetooth input that I can plug my headphones into so I can play in silence when I’m in a hotel room |
Question: | Can I put flatwound strings on my traveler bass |
Answer: | You should be able to. It's still a regular base guitar. It may be a little more difficult to actually string, because of how the pegs are situated, but you should be able to put whatever strings you want on it. |
Question: | What are best strings for this bass |
Answer: | Whatever you prefer (it is short scale). |

User questions & answers
Question: | how long the battery usually last |
Answer: | It really depends on the frequency of use. As long as you keep the guitar UNPLUGGED when you are not using it, the battery can last months with moderate use. I've had batteries last over a year with light use, so it really depends. |
Question: | Is it normal for your bass to have a little bit of fret buzz |
Answer: | It depends. Fret buzz on the bass is mostly on the low E string. The action can be changed on the bridge with the allen key provided and raise it slightly. If you arent comfortable doing this yourself, you can take it to a local GC and have it done for minimal charge. I have two of these basses and it is an excellent bass for the price. Hope this helps! |
Question: | What Strings Do I Buy To Match The Originals With The Red String Ends |
Answer: | Rotosounds are the bass strings with the red fabric at end. Nice strings and good sound. |
Question: | why the battery in an Ibanez gsr200 bass |
Answer: | There is one because it is an active pickup so it is for the active eq and bass boost. |

We developed the Ace 4 and 5 string set neck bass after the success of the Spade six string. We had bass players constantly inquiring about a bass version. Being a devotee of The Rolling Stones I saw Bill Wyman in Los Angeles then later Stanley Clark with Keith Richards “The New Barbarians” concert playing a headless bass. We also developed the monorail prototype hardware and the Ace was born. The Ace is a full scale professional bass that also doubles as a travel bass due to its compact size. Since the 80's creative luthiers like Steinberger have challenged the standard by producing high quality guitars without heads. This unconventional, but savvy design places all of the hardware in one location. Having everything in one place eliminates the need for a head, which is a boon for your open notes and intonation in general. Without that extra wood and hardware at the end of the neck, balance of the guitar shifts to the body, alleviating the strain on your strap shoulder. Lighter, full scale, compact and works great as a travel bass. Current headless bass builders such as Strandberg, Teuffel, Mayones, NS, Roehrs, Kiesel, Skervesen and Carvin make high end high quality headless guitars. Now Bootlegger Guitar is introducing the new ACE 4 and 5 string bass inspired by our Spade six string guitar. Both these high quality guitars are built by our factory Muse, South Korea, bring value and extreme playability enjoyment.
