For whatever reason, the coloful models do seem to speak a little bit more easily, but both set the bar fairly high for plastic recorders-- way better than any of the other models we've purchased, including the more expensive brown and beige 302B Yamaha model (which looks great, but is quiet and does not hit the low notes as easily as this model.)

Baroque vs German fingering - what's the difference?

The basic design of recorders was developed hundreds of years ago during the Baroque music period of the 1600's and early 1700's. This classical style is still preferred by many music teachers and schools, mostly because some specific notes play a little better in tune with this design.

In the 1920's, instrument designers in Germany felt that the standard Baroque recorder was too difficult for beginners to learn, since some notes put the player’s fingers in positions that can feel uncomfortable. Because of this, they made a small change to make those notes easier for a beginner to play. However, there's a trade-off – while the finger positions are easier, those same notes are harder to play in tune.

You can tell which version you have by looking at the 4th and 5th holes down from the top. If the 4th hole is smaller than the 5th, it's Baroque. If the 4th hole is larger, it's German. If you need a recorder to use in school, check with your teacher to make sure you get the right type!

Answer:	The Yamaha YRS 24B recorder is the standard entry level recorder used by most general music teachers. The Yamaha YRS 302B is part of the 300 Series recorders which are the professional level recorders. They have extra features like an arched wind-way for richer body of sound. I do not know how those two compare to the Suzuki SRE 3 Recorder (West Music doesn't sell those). However, based on the price I would assume it is also an entry level recorder. I hope this helps!

Question:	The description says its a 3 piece, but how do you remove the head joint? Mine is stuck
Answer:	If you're trying to remove the white part only, you can NOT. Looking at from the top(the white mouth part), the first joint is below the 2nd white part, so you twist to clockwise gently, then it separates. The second joint is right before the 3rd white part, so you twist there gently then it separate, therefore it becomes 3 separate parts. The middle part is ALL brown, the other two parts have two white parts.

Answer:	I've never used alcohol, but I clean mine with a bit of dish soap and water. I have heard of others using a bit of shampoo in their water to clean it. Run some hot water with some soap mixed in into a plugged sink or a bowl big enough to fit all of the pieces and let soak for 10-15 minutes, then rinse all the pieces well and let dry.

Answer:	I'm not sure what a foot joint is, but it has 3 parts. The mouth piece, the middle part with almost all of the fingering holes, and the bottom where the little finger goes (foot joint?)Its a nice instrument, needs to be cleaned fairly often.Hope this helps.

Answer:	In this price range, I would buy plastic just because it's easier to maintain, and the sound quality of the Yamaha 300 series is superb. For less than the price of one wooden alto, you could buy a full case of Yamaha 300s, including the sopranino, soprano, alto, and tenor recorders. If I had to pick only one, I'd buy the alto because it plays better with musical songbooks like the Disney Fakebook. The distance between my wrist and tip of pinky finger is 5.5" and my hand perfectly fits the alto. If your hand is smaller than this, you might find the soprano to be a better fit.

Answer:	There is nothing unusual about the hole placement on this alto. I have played several and they are all about the same. I also play the tenor which is difficult to pick up and play if I haven't warmed up a bit first. Want some fun? Yamaha also makes a sopranino and it is SMALLER than the normal soprano recorder. It reads the same notation as the alto.
Question:	The 300 series have been known for condensation issues that affect perfomance over time, until cleaned. Has anyone found this to be a problem
Answer:	The lowest note on a soprano is "C". The analogous note (all holes closed) on an alto is the "F" below it. A tenor can play the "C" below that and a bass can play the "F" below that.

Question:	Anyone else having a problem with a mold odor with this recorder
Answer:	That can happen with any wind instrument (but I believe especially a plastic or metal instrument such a recorder and Irish whistle) if it is put back into the case wet. It has to be swabbed out and left out of its case to dry or put into a well-ventilated case until dry. If it happens, washing with soap and water and rinsing well is the remedy for plastic models.
Question:	why it is out of pitch in C and fluctuated like a wistle sound
Answer:	Mine is spot on (with an extremely sensitive StroboPlus tuner), but only if I am careful about being relaxed, keeping my cheeks full of air, not blowing too fast or too much pressure, keeping the instrument almost level, and not too full of condensation. Best bets: (1) Air speed. Recorders are finicky about air speed. Blow too fast and the tone will sound sharp. Much too fast and the recorder will jump to the next octave and be sharp at that, and can even seem like a whistle with a bead in it. (2) Improper position. Too low and the air speed increases. Same result. (3) Condensation or other obstruction in airway. This can also cause the air to speed up to get past the obstruction. (3) One finger is almost, but not quite, in position, changing pitch as the finger pressure changes slightly. With everything perfect, and a sensitive tuner, you can watch your tone rise and fall as your air speed and pressure change. It's a good exercise to vary your air slightly from a bit low to a bit high, and watch the tone respond. Do this with every note and you will find out quickly if something is wrong with the instrument. More likely, you will find that your tone is completely in your control.

Answer:	The windway is slightly arched. I can't really tell that it makes much difference in the sound.
Question:	How does this recorder compare to the Aulos 703BW plastic soprano
Answer:	I have compared the Aulos 703B and Yamaha Ecodear to each other and both to a Moeck grenadilla Rottenburgh soprano that I also own. The Aulos is the loudest of the three. The Moeck has the most focused and sweetest tone, but only slightly more than the Ecodear. I think overall it is fair to say the Aulos is a bit more diffuse—making it closer to a pearwood soprano I occasionally play. The Aulos is more focused than the pearwood instrument. And there are times in the upper tones of its range that I can get a tone every bit as focused and sweet as the Ecodear. But if I could take only one of these instruments to the proverbial desert island, I would without hesitation pack the Ecodear.

Answer:	I have 3 plastic alto recorders. All 3 appear to have different size windways in the tip of the mouthpiece. The size of the windway opening appears to affect the volume and time you can play the recorder without condensation being an issue. From smallest to largest size of windway opening are Yamaha YRA-402B, Yamaha YRA-302Bii and Aulos 709BW. This recorder (Yamaha YRA-402B) tends to clog the quickest and have the lowest sound volume. On the other hand, it is the easiest to hit the highest notes (due to fast air speed due to the narrow windway opening). The Yamaha YRA-302Bii plays slightly longer than the 402B before clogging, but is more difficult to hit the highest note. My favorite plastic alto recorder is the Aulos 709BW. I use this recorder exclusively in performance. It never clogs. It has the largest windway and therefore the greatest volume. It has a more reedy sound and blends better with the church choir.

Answer:	The finish is a glossy dark mahogany brown to be expected with ABS plastic. I consider it to look reasonably favorable when compared with its wood compatriots.

Answer:	Yes, this recorder will come with a soft vinyl case, cleaning rod, cream/joint grease and a fingering chart as well. I hope this helps!
Question:	Which is the most useful key to get an alto recorder in
Answer:	This is tuned to a = 440. I have never seen a plastic recorder tuned to 415. That kind of instrument is usually made to order and is quite expensive. This Yamaha Tenor recorder is a fine instrument and is in tune from top to bottom.
Question:	What's the difference between the YRA-302B and the YRA-312B
Answer:	Please double-check the product numbers. The YRT-304BII is a TENOR recorder, fingered like a SOPRANO recorder. These are C-tuned instruments. The tenor produces a sound an octave lower than the soprano. The YRT-304B is an ALTO recorder. It is F-tuned. I think (at least as I look at the descriptions on Amazon), that the 304B is a BROWN ALTO recorder. I notice that the YRT-304BIII is also an ALTO recorder.

What's in a Windway?

The windway is the opening at the top of a recorder that you blow into. The shape of this opening is very important to the way the recorder plays and feels. Yamaha offers two different styles:

• A straight windway is easy to play with very light air, and produces a soft and pure tone. This is typically preferred for beginners, and is found on the YRA-28B.
• An arched windway gives more blowing resistance than a straight windway. This added resistance gives more experienced players better breath control which allows greater tonal expression and projection. Yamaha 300 and 400 series alto recorders use arched windways.

Answer:	I don't know if there is any difference from a musical standpoint. The finish is different (312 is a rosewood finish and 314 is an ebony finish). Other than that, I believe they are the same.However, I will say that they Yamaha alto recorder gives a nice sound.

Answer:	The other answers are incorrect. There are indeed altos made in different keys. Your choices are F and G, both either in A-440 or A-415. Plastic alto recorders are only made in F at A-440. There is set to be released, however, an A-415 plastic alto by Zen-on later this year.
Question:	What kind of reed does it use
Answer:	Hi! They are both exactly the SAME DESIGN - the only difference being the finish in the 312B sporting a synthetic woodgrain look (either the walnut or other 314B). Interesting enough, although the difference is by having just a layer of something wrapped or sealed into the resin, it's widespread knowledge that somehow the 312B and 314B with the synthetic woodgrain finish ACTUALLY sound better.I forget what the material is made of but if you touch a 302 and a 312/314, you will feel that the latter is cooler to the touch AKIN some metal low conductivity metal. But do not quote me on this.
