14 best flutes
Flutes are a family of musical instruments that belong to the woodwind category, known for their beautiful and melodious sounds. They are widely used in various musical traditions and genres, including classical, folk, jazz, and contemporary music. Here are some key points about flutes:
Types of Flutes:
- The most common type of flute is the Western concert flute, also known as the transverse flute. It is typically made of metal, such as silver, nickel silver, or gold, and is played horizontally.
- Another well-known type is the piccolo, which is a smaller and higher-pitched version of the concert flute.
- In the family of flutes, there are also various traditional and ethnic flutes, such as the Native American flute, Irish flute, and bamboo flutes, each with its unique characteristics and cultural significance.
Structure:
- Flutes consist of three main parts: the headjoint, the body, and the footjoint. The headjoint contains the mouthpiece and is where the player blows air into the instrument. The body of the flute contains the majority of the keys and tone holes. The footjoint extends the range of the instrument in some cases.
Playing Technique:
- Flutists create sound by blowing air across the edge of the embouchure hole on the headjoint. The player's fingers cover and uncover the tone holes on the body to change the pitch.
- Unlike reed instruments, such as clarinets or saxophones, flutes do not use a reed to produce sound.Instead, they rely on the player's ability to control the airstream and embouchure (the shape of the lips and mouth).
Range and Sound:
- The Western concert flute has a range of about three octaves and can produce a wide variety of tones, from delicate and lyrical to bright and piercing.
- Flutes are known for their smooth and lyrical sound quality, often associated with pastoral or serene musical passages.
Historical Significance:
- Flutes have a rich history dating back thousands of years, with ancient flutes made from materials like bone, wood, and clay. They have been used in various cultures for ceremonial, entertainment, and storytelling purposes.
Orchestral and Band Use:
- Flutes are an integral part of classical orchestras and wind bands, where they contribute to the woodwind section's distinctive sound.
- In orchestras, flutes often play a wide range of roles, from solo melodies to providing harmonic support and color.
Maintenance:
- Proper maintenance is crucial to keep flutes in good playing condition. Regular cleaning and lubrication of key mechanisms are essential for their longevity and performance quality.
Notable Flutists:
- There have been many renowned flutists throughout history, including Jean-Pierre Rampal, Sir James Galway, and Emmanuel Pahud, who have made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
Flutes are versatile instruments with a rich history and a prominent role in various musical settings, making them a cherished part of the world of music.

User questions & answers
Question: | What’s the difference between $1000 and this one |
Answer: | This flute is made from junk metal, cannot be repaired, isn’t in tune, cannot be sold if your kid stops playing and has closed holes. A $1000 flute is a professional instrument. |
Question: | I wonder if the resonance (sound) is metal or plastic |
Answer: | This Glory Flute is amazing for the price. Better than many double or triple the price. Nice mellow sounds. The flute is all metal and very polished. |
Question: | How well does it play compared to an Armstrong flute |
Answer: | There is a WORLD of difference between these flutes and even the entry level Armstrong, starting with durability but extending to tone, embouchure, key action, pads, springs, and serviceability - just to START. The ONLY time spending money on one of these is "worth it" is if there are no other options, in my opinion. Who am I to say so? I have played flute(s) for 46 years in marching bands; concert bands; orchestras; as a soloist & in ensembles; for festivals, weddings, and other events. I was chosen for a prestigious youth symphony, a nationally known marching band, and hired by a pro symphony orchestra at age 20. I have played Artley, Bundy, De Ford, Emerson, Selmer, Armstrong, Gemeinhardt, Pearl, Azumi, Yamaha, Muramatsu, Powell and Haynes flutes, in addition to nearly all of the recent Chinese imported brands like Sky, Glory, Mendini, etc. I have also played Artley, Armstrong, Gemeinhardt, Jupiter, and Yamaha piccolos (and tried the imports, too). I've taught flute lessons for over 30 years, and I've worked with flute techs, ad by myself, on almost every instrument brand over the last decade. The BIGGEST PROBLEM with cheap, imported flutes is that that are not fixable. Many techs will not work on them. The metal is soft/poor quality. They bend easily and the springs, keys and tome holes do not last. The companies do not stand behind them. (Try returning one for warranty work.) You MIGHT have time to learn the fingering for notes before your flute expires, or if you are exceptional, your instrument may last longer. You are, in my EXPERT opinion, far better off to spend a bit more and get even a USED Armstrong, Gemeinhardt, Yamaha, Emerson, Artley, etc. than to buy one of these. Silver, even plate, sounds MUCH different than "cupronickel metal" colored silver (or something else). A beginner won't hear it. A musician will. |
Question: | How long does it take for the paint to start chipping off and what is the paint made out of |
Answer: | At first it was awesome! After 2 weeks.. the color chipped off.. |

User questions & answers
Question: | F doesn't work. Key that's not supposed to close closes. Easy fix or send back |
Answer: | Very vague question. Bottom of what ? The flute or the case? To answer about either, I would say buy a new one. |
Question: | Does the 17 key flute silver glory flute come with a b foot please i need help i need a b foot flute or else ill wont be abke to continue band thanks |
Answer: | I don’t believe mine did. |
Question: | If i select the 17 open hole key silver flute will it come with a b foot joint im planing to order one |
Answer: | They are USA go to Lazarro web page on Google type in Lazarro instruments, and their site comes up. Made in the USA |
Question: | Your title says off set g and b foot, but also says c flute. the description does not mention the (off set g and b foot) what is the truth |
Answer: | As a pro, I would say, no. Since this question is from 3 years ago, my intention is to help others choosing flutes for beginner students. Most teachers profess that the Gemeinhardt is the best for beginners, but I disagree. While NOTHING is going to beat silver for sound quality, if you need something economical for a young beginner, I suggest a Bundy. The biggest hurdle a beginner has is resistance on the embouchure, and for the price, but without silver, Bundy is the best buy. I hope this helps others. Not everyone can afford (or even needs) a Pearl Cantabile, so I understand looking for a good product at a reasonable price. |
- Material: Memory spring needle made by high quality Stainless-Steel springs, bladder pads made of Italian felt double sheep casings, air tightness and long-lasting.
- Design: It has standard features like 16 closed-hole keys, offset G with split E key, detachable foot-joint. The offset G key is allows you to reach the G key naturally with ease. Split E key divides G into two separate keys moving independently while linked.
- Tone: Real CUPRONICKEL body, High quality leather mats and metal echo panels which make good resonance, more explosive.
- Elegant appearance: Keys All key shapes and placement have been ergonomically designed for a comfortable, natural-feeling performance.
- Newly improved 2019 Series Premium Grade Nickel plated C Flute can be a good gift for beginner, for kids, students, and so on.
User questions & answers
Question: | There was no stand or cleaning rod in my shipment. How do I get my stand and rod |
Answer: | I don't know anything about fixing instruments, so I would have to send it back. |
Question: | Is there a book or instructions? Ours came with nothing |
Answer: | I believe that what I own is a 17 key C foot with 2 keys at the end. Not a b. AB has 3 keys at the end. Hope it helps. |
Question: | What is this flute made of and what is the country of origin |
Answer: | The closed hole came with mine. I would believe the open hole would also. |
Question: | what is a c 16 flute |
Answer: | A a C flute refers to the key in which the instrument plays. (ex., a B-flat trumpet, when playing a C note, will sound a B-flat)B an offset G refers to the location of the key under the left ring finger. if it lines up with the other keys, it is inline. offset Gs are easier because the key is slightly forward, making it less stressful for the wrist.C the foot is the third segment of the instrument. most basic models will offer a C foot which enables the player to reach a maximum of low C. a B foot will enable the player to reach a low B.so to answer your question...probably all of it is true. also, dude--Google. learn it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the flute new |
Answer: | Yes I think so it's 14 mm |
Question: | what is the difference between student and intermediate model |
Answer: | I’m not certain what you mean by “standard size”. This chaser is for the 14mm x 1.25mm thread size/pitch. Automotive spark plugs come in 4 popular sizes. The easiest way to know is to measure your current spark plugs. |
Question: | Is this flute 17 closed holes |
Answer: | Probably, if it has standard 14mm plugs. |
Question: | Is this good for an intermediate level adult who wants to start playing again |
Answer: | I got this for a 2001 Ford E350 because I thought it was the next size up to re-thread it for a blown plug, but it just re-threads the thread you already have If you have cross threaded a plug I guess. I you have a blown plug though, you need to get one of these http://www.zoro.com/i/G1243094/?utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PLA Just make sure it's the correct kit...... I ended up getting one from Autozone to make sure I got the right one, but I'm sure you could get it on here as well? ... The only problem I had was the nut on the tap was too big to fit in the spark plug hole, weird?! but ground it down with a grinder until it fitted in the socket. re-cut the thread, then you put the new thread insert, supplied with the kit on the plug as stated on the instructions and touch wood, all is AOK so far after a few thousand miles...............Not even sure if any off that helped, but good luck. |

Question: | Where is this flute made of |
Answer: | Good day, If the question is where is the flute made? Answer will be Indonesia. Like all other Yamaha products that are either beginner or intermediate level, they are made in China or Indonesia. Only professional lines are made in Japan. Anything else please advise, Beagle Music Online. |
Question: | Is this an authentic? Why is it half the price of authorized Yamaha dealers |
Answer: | I bought one and I'm still not sure. I saw a review on youtube with what appears to be the same flute that seems legitimate. I paid just about $500.00 from one of these Amazon merchants and my 4 star verified purchase review is posted. I'm happy with the purchase so far. The flute does have "pointed" rather than "y" key arms and seems quite well made. However I am not a technician or professional musician. I was surprised at the low price compared to "Sam Ash" and "Musicians Friend" pricing at about $1000.00. Authorized dealer carries a 5 years warranty but that doesn't cover pads & springs & corks so I took my chance. By the way after I made my purchase I saw "Flute Center of New York" which is an authorized dealer has the flute priced at $629.00. I might have purchased that one had I done more research and waited. I emailed the serial number to Yamaha and they responded that they don't verify unless purchased from an authorized dealer. I still would like to have the flute I received checked by a Yamaha authorized tech which I may do down the line when it needs maintenance. I would also like to compare the flute I received to a known Yamaha 222. Sorry I can't confirm for sure it's authenticity, Good luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the difference between 1sp and 2sp |
Answer: | Unfortunately, I don't know. I search their website and found their comparison between the two flutes to be vague and unhelpful. They indicate a higher quality and offer a longer, 5 year vs 3 year, warranty. And there is a price difference, but no details. I bought my granddaughter the 2SP and she loves it. Not being a flutist, I take heard word for it. I did a lot of research about student flutes at it came highly recommended. Try googling student flutes. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is the flute new? Is it a black thick case? It only says black plastic, and I am bit lost. Can you display a photo of the case |
Answer: | Yes the flute is brand new. I bought one for a student and it is excellent. The case is very thick and there is a velvet lining inside to protect the flute. It is not a plastic that you would think of. I can't really describe it, but it is extremely sturdy. Let's put it this way, I have been a flutist for 31 years and I have dropped the cases many, many times and the wasn't even a scratch in the case and the flute was fine. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is this flute with Gemeinhardt warranty? How many year |
Answer: | I am unsure about the warranty, but have been very pleased with the flute thus far -- I have been playing flute for many, many years and used this flute for the last approx 8 months. I have received compliments on its beautiful tone. Sorry about not having any specifics about the warranty. |
Question: | is it good flute? does it arrive tuned |
Answer: | Flutes need to be tuned every time they are assembled, so you will want to have a tuner of some kind as well. As for whether it is a good flute, I found it to be good for its range; it has a nice sound, I think, a warmer and sweeter sound than some, to my ears at least. However, each flute is different, and so is everybody's taste; if you have the opportunity to do so, I would very much recommend that you go to a shop selling the instruments and try listening to several and find which one you like. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | The instrument is made in Indonesia and the little carrying bag case is made in India. Yamaha is a very durable brand. |
Question: | the description states it is made in the US, but what does the packaging say |
Answer: | made in Indonesia |
Question: | does it come with case |
Answer: | It comes with a cloth draw string bag. |
Question: | has anyone compared this with the Yamaha YRS24B series ivory-colored models? Is this exactly the same, or different in feel and tone |
Answer: | I teach a recorder class for high school students and we have about 20 models of the ivory recorders and about 15 of the colorful 20BG recorders. For whatever reason, the coloful models do seem to speak a little bit more easily, but both set the bar fairly high for plastic recorders-- way better than any of the other models we've purchased, including the more expensive brown and beige 302B Yamaha model (which looks great, but is quiet and does not hit the low notes as easily as this model.) |
Product features
Start with great sound
Yamaha has been building musical instruments for more than 130 years, so we know what it takes to make a great sound. Our 20-series models produce a classic recorder tone that's pure and in tune across the whole instrument.
Easy for beginners
20-series recorders make it easy to play right from the start. The rectangular airway gives very little resistance, so even a light breath can make a clear note. A great choice for classrooms or beginners of any age!
Durable and safe
Made from the same kind of plastic used in countless popular toys, Yamaha 20-series recorders are built to last for years of reliable use. They can even be washed with soap and water, so keeping them clean is easy.
Colorful choices
Our see-through blue, green and pink models are playful, but produce the same great sound as our standard ivory colored models. Have fun with your music without sacrificing your tone.
Baroque vs German fingering - what's the difference?
The basic design of recorders was developed hundreds of years ago during the Baroque music period of the 1600's and early 1700's. This classical style is still preferred by many music teachers and schools, mostly because some specific notes play a little better in tune with this design.
In the 1920's, instrument designers in Germany felt that the standard Baroque recorder was too difficult for beginners to learn, since some notes put the player’s fingers in positions that can feel uncomfortable. Because of this, they made a small change to make those notes easier for a beginner to play. However, there's a trade-off – while the finger positions are easier, those same notes are harder to play in tune.
You can tell which version you have by looking at the 4th and 5th holes down from the top. If the 4th hole is smaller than the 5th, it's Baroque. If the 4th hole is larger, it's German. If you need a recorder to use in school, check with your teacher to make sure you get the right type!
