13 best guitar wah wah pedals

A guitar wah-wah pedal is a popular and iconic effect used in electric guitar playing, known for its distinctive and expressive sound. It falls into the category of electric guitar effects and is often used to add a dynamic and vocal-like quality to the guitar's tone. Here's what you need to know about guitar wah-wah pedals:

  1. Basic Function: A wah-wah pedal is essentially a tone filter that allows the guitarist to shape the guitar's sound by emphasizing or de-emphasizing specific frequency ranges. It does this by sweeping through a range of frequencies, creating a "wah" or "quack" sound as the pedal is rocked back and forth.

  2. Pedal Design: Most wah-wah pedals have a rocker pedal on the front that the guitarist operates with their foot. When the pedal is rocked forward, it emphasizes higher frequencies, producing a brighter sound. When rocked backward, it emphasizes lower frequencies, resulting in a darker and bassier sound.

  3. Expressive Control: The rocking motion of the pedal allows for real-time control of the guitar's tone. Musicians use it to create dynamic, vowel-like sounds, often mimicking the human voice. This expressive quality has made the wah-wah pedal a favorite among guitarists for solos and lead playing.

  4. History: The wah-wah pedal was popularized in the 1960s, notably by artists like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The "Cry Baby" wah pedal is one of the most famous models and has been used by countless legendary guitarists.

  5. Usage: Wah-wah pedals are used in various musical genres, including rock, blues, funk, and more. They are commonly found on pedalboards of guitarists who seek to add a touch of expressiveness and character to their playing.

  6. Circuitry: Inside a wah-wah pedal, there is a circuit that controls the sweep of frequencies. Some models offer additional control options, such as a sweep range adjustment or a "Q" control to fine-tune the resonance of the filter.

  7. Placement in Signal Chain: Wah-wah pedals are typically placed in the signal chain between the guitar and the amplifier. They are often positioned before other effects pedals to shape the sound going into subsequent effects.

  8. Variations: Over the years, there have been various wah-wah pedal models and variations. Some are designed to be compact and pedalboard-friendly, while others offer additional features like built-in distortion or boost.

  9. Notable Models: Apart from the Cry Baby, there are many other well-known wah-wah pedals, including the Vox V847, Morley Bad Horsie, and various boutique and custom-made options.

In summary, a guitar wah-wah pedal is a classic and expressive effect used by guitarists to shape and manipulate the tone of their electric guitars. Its unique sound has been a staple in rock and blues music for decades, and it remains a popular choice for adding character and dynamics to guitar solos and lead playing.

User questions & answers

Question: will this work with a steel guitar

Question: Shipping to Australia, what adapter would work
Answer: PW-CT-9V DC Planet Waves adapter center negative.
Question: What is the power supply for this pedal

User questions & answers

Question: Is this better than 95Q
Answer: Define better. Physically it's the same quality build. It has more features. More features is only "better" if you need the features.
Question: Does the 535Q function as a volume pedal when not in wah mode
Answer: Nope, it's a wah pedal, not a volume pedal....
Question: Has anyone been able to adjust this to go between guitar and bass? I play both for different bands and am looking for a way to carry less gear
Answer: I've tried plugging in my bass through it... it doesn't quite scoop the right frequencies for it-- sounds anemic and flat. I know Dunlop makes a bass wah pedal for this purpose if you're looking for an expression pedal. But what I like about the 535Q is that it's tailored with settings for the more advanced/professional player looking for that dynamic 'wah' sound. Sounds very warm & punchy through an EFX pedal or clean... Have fun!
Question: Does this variant have the auto heel return thing on the pedal
Answer: No, it doesn't. It operates solely by the movement of the foot rocking heel to toe. Wherever you stop your foot's movement is where the wah frequency/sweep will be set at (unless, you click down all the way on the toe end to go into bypass mode). The only pedals I know of that have the auto-return feature, is the Bad Horsie Wah by Morley and at least one other model they make. They have increased their pedal line and have a very large number of wah-wah's you might be interested in. Check out their website.

    User questions & answers

    Question: Is this optical
Answer: Don't what you mean by " optical "? But if you're looking for a Killer Wah pedal, with volume control ,Grab this! It sounds better than a Vox or Bad Horsey! PS I drilled a small hole at the top right of the pad ,to see work light . Easier to see
Question: My epiphone lp electric has passive pickups. should i get the active pedal (vowel) or the passive (viper
Answer: I have the vowel. What's nice is it is also an active volume pedal so you get two pedals in one and it also acts as buffer. Most of my guitars have passive humbuckers like your Epi and it works great. I use it on a mini pedalboard.
Question: Is the switch true bypass
Answer: I’m not 100% sure. I’m gonna say no. I don’t see anywhere that it says the pedal is true bypass. However I don’t notice any serious change to my sound. It’s a pretty good pedal for the price. I can for sure tell you that much.
Question: for the wah how do you active it? pushing down a pot as same as a cry baby or just puting your feet on as the The wahter (mooer)? thks
Answer: Both. Pushing down the pot changes it from wah to a volume pedal. There is a light showing what mode its in. Having the pedal all the way horizontal puts it at normal tone or volume level.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this run with a 9v battery
Answer: With the sens all the way down, the range knob works sort of like a low pass filter; with range all the way left, it's very muddy and muffled, and all the way right it sounds pretty bright and punchy. The pedal works well as a volume boost in that setting. The decay and range are pretty temperamental, some days they're stronger than others, depending on the weather or whatever. The Boss AW-3 will give you more predictable sound control, but for the money this pedal sounds awesome and it's a lot of fun.

These inductors were the key to the pedals' tone, but have been unavailable for years. Not anymore.
