13 best boss volume pedals

Boss volume pedals are a type of musical effects pedal designed to control the volume of an instrument, typically an electric guitar, in a hands-free manner. These pedals are an essential tool for guitarists and other musicians looking to shape their sound and dynamics during performances. Here's what you need to know about Boss volume pedals:

  1. Volume Control: The primary function of a Boss volume pedal is to control the volume of the instrument it is connected to. By manipulating the pedal with your foot, you can smoothly adjust the volume level from silent to the instrument's maximum output.

  2. Passive vs. Active: Boss offers both passive and active volume pedals. Passive pedals don't require a power source and work by physically attenuating the signal. Active pedals use electronics and often provide additional features, such as buffered outputs and tuners.

  3. Tuner Output: Many Boss volume pedals include a dedicated tuner output. This allows you to tune your instrument without affecting the signal path or the volume heard by the audience.

  4. Expression Pedal Mode: Some Boss volume pedals can function as expression pedals for compatible devices like digital effects processors or synthesizers. In this mode, they can control parameters like modulation depth or delay time.

  5. Durability: Boss is known for building robust and durable pedals, and their volume pedals are no exception. They are typically built to withstand the rigors of live performances and touring.

  6. Mono and Stereo Operation: Depending on the model, Boss volume pedals can support mono or stereo connections, making them suitable for a variety of setups and instruments.

  7. Compatibility: Boss volume pedals are versatile and can be used with electric guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, and other electronic instruments.

  8. Expression Output: In addition to volume control, some models feature an expression output, allowing you to control external devices that accept expression pedal input.

  9. Adjustable Tension: Many Boss volume pedals have an adjustable tension knob, allowing you to customize the pedal's feel and response to your liking.

  10. Compact Design: Boss volume pedals are typically designed to be compact and pedalboard-friendly, making them easy to integrate into your setup.

Boss volume pedals are favored by many musicians for their reliability, build quality, and versatility. Whether you need precise volume control, a tuner output, or the ability to manipulate effects parameters, Boss volume pedals provide a practical solution for musicians seeking to shape their sound and dynamics during performances.

BOSS CP-1X Compressor Guitar Pedal

Powered by BOSS’s MDP technology, the CP-1X is a new type of multiband compressor for guitar that preserves the character of your instrument and technique for unlimited musical expression. Intelligent processing analyzes your signal in multiple dimensions as you play, providing advanced dynamics control that never colors or muddies your tone like typical stompbox compressors can. The simple, four-knob interface makes it easy to dial in sophisticated results, while the handy gain reduction indicator always shows you how much compression is being applied. Optimized for all types of guitars, the CP-1X offers next-generation performance for every style of music.

Intelligent Processing for Natural Sound

When you first plug into the CP-1X, you’re in for a totally new guitar compressor experience. Typical stompbox compressors color and restrict your sound, and are hard to dial in for various playing styles. The innovative CP-1X eliminates these drawbacks and more, opening up a world of expressive potential. The powerful MDP engine analyzes your guitar’s many different tonal elements in real time, providing natural compression that intelligently follows and adapts to your playing. With this high-tech approach, your true tone and technique always comes through, even when using aggressive settings for that effected “squish.”

Tap Into New Levels of Musical Expression

No matter what kind of guitar or style you play, the CP-1X always delivers rich, musical tone. From mellow phrases and arpeggios to heavy rhythms, fast solos, and beyond, every playing nuance remains detailed and defined. The pedal also provides superior performance for chicken pickin’ country licks, funky rhythm grooves, and other standard guitar compressor applications, and works great as a booster thanks to its punchy, transparent sound. On seven- and eight-string guitars, the CP-1X easily controls upper-range dynamics without compromising your powerful low-end tone. And when used with acoustic-electric guitar, the natural, lush overtones are fully preserved as you go from gentle fingerpicking to full-chord strums.

Studio-Level Results with Simple Controls

With the knobs on most pedal compressors, what you see is what you get. Not so with the CP-1X, as the pedal’s controls interact with each other at a highly detailed level. When you turn a knob, numerous interlocked parameters are adjusted under the hood at once. This gives you dynamics control and tone shaping ability that far exceeds standard compressor pedals, providing results previously attainable only with high-end studio processing. The good news is that you don’t need to be a sound engineer to use the CP-1X—its sophisticated MDP processing has been meticulously fine-tuned by the BOSS engineers to let you dial in ultra-polished tone with familiar stompbox controls.

MDP: Advanced Tech, Superior Tone

Leveraging decades of research and development, BOSS’s proprietary Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) technology offers a fresh approach to achieving exceptional guitar tones. In real time, MDP analyzes the various elements that make up the sound, including frequency, overtones, dynamics, pickup response, and more. Various playing characteristics are analyzed as well, such as note register, single notes vs. chords, bends, vibrato amount, and others. Each individual element is then processed in unique ways to produce optimized tones as you play. With its ultra-detailed, high-tech approach, MDP delivers tone quality and playability that reaches far beyond the limits of traditional effects processing.

Answer: No; since it's a passive volume pedal, it requires no power supply.
Question: Would you recomment high impedance or low impedance if using in front of analog pedals and tube amp
Answer: Hi there - The 6180 is for PASSIVE guitars and basses. The 6181 is for ACTIVE instruments. The potentiometer's value inside the pedals differs depending on what type of instrument you have. If you are using anything with active electronics (powered by a battery) then you need to use the 6181. If you have a normal guitar with standard magnetic pickups, then you need the 6180. -Andy

User questions & answers

Question: I have an ep 2, it seems very weak when used with a dsi pro 2. is this pedal any different as far as the internal circuitry
Answer: The EP-3 uses the same specs for the potentiometer, just better construction from what I've gathered. The EP-2 should not have a lower output when in full volume position.
Question: Will this work with zoom b
Answer: I used it with the Zoom G3 which is the guitar equivalent. I don't see why it wouldn't work with the b3 if you can use an expression pedal with it.
Question: Can this pedal be used with an iPad and if so, do I need to also run it through a pedal board
Answer: Unless you have an interface for the iPad with a quarter inch expression pedal input then you cannot. This is mainly made for pedals (like moogs own moogerfooger and minifooger series) to control filter, q, wah and what not. It also works with multi effects, Kemper and Fractals. However! If you get something like this it should work exactly like you want it to :) http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BIPL9JW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1436635582&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX200_QL40&keywords=irig+blueboard&dpPl=1&dpID=31JAkRaDPqL&ref=plSrch
Question: Has anyone tried this with a Strymon product such as Mobius
Answer: This is one Strymon recommends on the mobius FAQ page. They also listed Roland EV-5 and Mission Engineering EP-1. I just bought it for my mobius so I don't know from my experience if it works.

Product Number: 6180

The design and development of the Ernie Ball pedals has been a team effort of guitar players and craftspersons within our company. Pedal bodies are an aluminum extrusion rather than a casting resulting in greater strength, uniformity, and smoother surfaces. Clear anodized grain finish insures lasting beauty. Overall dimensions: 4" W x 11" L x 2.5" H. The main pivot shaft is of centerless ground 1/2' diameter stainless steel, precision seated though nylon bushings at both ends. The large center shaft diameter, in addition the strength factor, creates a broader stress bearing surface. Our bodies and shafts are designed to give the player an indefinite service life! Deck mat of non-slip material is impervious to oil, alcohol, and most things you might spill on it. Quick disconnect wiring harness allows changing the pot without soldering. Tough long lasting Kevlar cable transmits pedal travel to the controls and is attached by stainless steel springs. This drive design results in smooth and quiet operation qualities lacking in gear driven models. Cycle tests are made on every pedal to insure perfect operation prior to packaging.

  • Taper switch for two distinctive swell rates
  • For passive signal in

User questions & answers

Question: I thought the "Jr" model meant it was small(er). Wow, this thing is big, what am I missing? Do they make anything smaller
Answer: Hello there, not sure what is happening with this pedal. I use this model and do not have that issue. Have you tried adjusting the level to a wider signal?
Question: Does the tuner output work full time or only when the pedal is heel down
Answer: This pedal does not have a on/off switch so the signal is never interrupted, it does not have to be true bypass. It’s a great pedal.
Question: Does this pedal need a battery and/or power supply
Answer: Yes , It certainly does in my experience with it! I have alll of my overdrive pedals placed before this, and the guitar cranked up, and you have the full overdrive that you desire at any volume, with all the tone intact! Active volume pedal is the way to go. I have my delay pedals placed after this volume pedal, and everything sounds great! Love it!
Question: What is the difference between the E.BALL 6180 JR and the 6181 JR? Is one more versatile
Answer: Since the MVP is an active pedal with a buffer, it needs to be powered. According to their webpage, the current draw is less than 3 mA.

The BD-2 blues driver delivers the creamy yet crunchy sound associated with great blues guitar. This popular pedal provides instant access to the kind of warm overdrive and emotive distortion usually reserved for 30-year-old tube amps.

  • Classic "blues" guitar tones with tube amp simulation
  • Warm distortion and overdrive
  • Responds to nuance and volume changes
  • AC adaptor (not included) or 9V battery operation (included)
  • BOSS five-year warranty

User questions & answers

Question: This one or the combo drive??? any opinion? I play Rock and blues
Answer: No it it does not include a power supply.
Question: Does this pedal suck the highs and lows from the signal
Answer: The Plumes is basically a Tubescreamer with some options added (asymmetrical clipping, boost, symmetrical clipping). The EQ leans towards being bright and slightly scooped. I don't think Plumes is really fit for purpose for metal tones. In my humble opinion. Perhaps check out the EQD Tonejob plus a metal distortion pedal...
Question: Will the BD2 stack well if placed after a fuzz face to boost and shape the fuzz pedal's sound
Answer: I don't use batteries as I have a large board and use a power supply. I have tried over a dozen ODs, even boutique, and this pedal is the best. I get all the crunch gain from my Mesa, but a light OD on the clean channel is a must. You get 3 different tones with this one, and the price is stupid cheap. Their website does NOT mention battery power so I assume there is no room inside.
Question: Does the bd-2 have more distortion/overdrive available than a tube screamer
Answer: I think this is supposed to be a tube-screamer type pedal. Mine didn’t sound anything like a TS9 or 808 regardless of the settings.

Answer: It should be about 10 inches long, 3.5 inches wide and 3 inches high
Question: Can i use it as an expression for my pitch fork ehx and as a volume pedal without unplug
Answer: High impedance would be best in front of pedals unless you have active pickups. If your pickups are passive definitely high impedance in front. Passive pups would need a buffered power pedal of some sort before the volume pedal for best results. However they will both work, you just may lose your high tones and color your sound.
