14 best vox guitar amplifiers
Vox guitar amplifiers are iconic amplifiers used by many guitarists worldwide. They are renowned for their unique design, distinctive sound, and historical significance in the world of music. Here are the key points about Vox guitar amplifiers and their relation to musical instruments, specifically electric guitars:
Historical Significance: Vox amplifiers gained popularity in the 1960s when bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones used Vox AC30 amplifiers. These amplifiers played a significant role in shaping the sound of the British Invasion and became synonymous with the "British sound" in rock music.
Classic Models: One of Vox's most famous models is the AC30, a combo amplifier featuring two 12-inch speakers. The AC30 is known for its warm, chimey tone and is favored by guitarists for its clarity and responsiveness. Vox also produces other models, including the AC15, which is a smaller version of the AC30, and various solid-state and modeling amplifiers.
Tube Amplifiers: Vox tube amplifiers are highly regarded for their use of vacuum tube technology, which contributes to their rich and dynamic sound. Tube amplifiers are favored by many guitarists for their warm tone and natural compression.
Solid-State and Modeling Amplifiers: In addition to tube amplifiers, Vox manufactures solid-state amplifiers and modeling amplifiers that offer a wide range of tones and effects. These amplifiers use digital technology to replicate the sound of classic tube amplifiers and provide various built-in effects like reverb, delay, and modulation.
Innovative Features: Vox amplifiers often feature innovative designs and technologies. For example, the Vox Valvetronix series combines modeling technology with a genuine tube preamp to achieve a hybrid sound. The Vox AC30VR and AC15VR models utilize Valve Reactor technology to mimic the response and tone of a tube amplifier.
Effects and Tone Shaping: Vox amplifiers, especially the modeling ones, come with a variety of built-in effects and tone-shaping options. Guitarists can experiment with different sounds without the need for external pedals, making Vox amplifiers versatile and convenient for live performances and recording sessions.
Customization: Vox amplifiers are popular among guitarists who like to customize their sound. They often feature multiple channels, EQ controls, and effects loops, allowing musicians to tailor their tone to fit various musical styles and preferences.
Portability and Durability: Vox offers amplifiers in different sizes and power ratings, catering to the needs of different musicians. From compact practice amps to powerful stage amplifiers, Vox products are designed to be portable, durable, and reliable for gigging musicians.
Vox guitar amplifiers continue to be a favorite choice for guitarists seeking a classic sound with a touch of modern innovation, making them a prominent player in the world of electric guitar amplification.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it loud enough to play gigs |
Answer: | I have a VT30 and it is plenty loud to play gigs. I use an amp stand to bring it up to waist level. If you have a big room and or a lot of people, just mic it through the PA system. The best thing about these valvetronix amps are that they are VOX amps. I honestly don't think that I'll buy another Fender amp again. |
Question: | Does it take well on pedals? (want to use a dunlop cry baby |
Answer: | This is a great little amp. Plenty of sound. Pedals are not a problem at all. |
Question: | Mine has a slight constant hiss as soon as you turn it on. Does anyone else have this |
Answer: | Mine was so noisy I boxed it up and returned it. It had a constant hiss and background noise that went up and down as notes were played and decayed. Not a problem with loud, fast playing but it made slow, soft playing unbearably noisy. |
Question: | Have demoed several of the vtx range in stores: when you switch between amp models; the volume level jumps violently. anyone know why |
Answer: | The reason might be that the people who make the patches seem not to care about volume disparity, but the way around it in this case is to max the 'volume' knob, and then use the 'power level' knob as your master volume knob. The volumes between amp models will be more consistent if you do that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | loud enough to play with drums and bass? can i gig a small venue with this |
Answer: | In order to reach the full 50 watts, you will have to add another 8 ohm speaker cabinet to this combo. Or, have a 4 ohm 12" or 15" speaker cabinet to use with this Vox amp for gigs. Should be loud enough for small rooms. I use my NuTube Vox amp with a 15" 4 ohm Hartke speaker to play bass with during acoustic and light electric sets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this vox ac10c1 the one with the celestion greenback speaker |
Answer: | This amp comes with a celestion speaker. sweetwater sells one with the greenback. I found the stock speaker to sound very good. |
Question: | Is this a good option for playing around the house at lower volumes |
Answer: | Yes, it's an excellent option. At 10 watts you can get some good gain without killing your ears or angering your neighbors. AND, you can gig with it at smaller venues as I've done with a 5-piece band. If you need to go louder you can mic this amp and run it through the PA and monitors. But for jamming in your house it's excellent. |
Question: | When i plug in a headset in the back of the vox acl0c1 using the larger adapter jack there is only sound coming through left ear. why is this happening |
Answer: | that is internal jack to connect to another set of speakers no to be used on headphones , besides is it mono conection not stereo one you not going to hear in both side |
Question: | Does the ac10c1 have an effects loop? the description says it does but i can't identify its location on the included pictures turns |
Answer: | There is no effects loop. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought the mv50 clean amp head to go with this speaker...I would like reverb...any suggestions for add on |
Answer: | There are a wide variety of outboard units. However instead of investing the money in a dedicated reverb unit you might want to get a multi effect processor which has reverb as one of its effects. The Zoom GXion is an excellent multi effect and the reverb section is quite good and totally customizable. It also has a programmable expression pedal. I've been playing for 50 years and it is my main fx processor. I'm not sure of the current price but it is less than $100 |
Question: | can i use this with a non vox mini amp head |
Answer: | Yes with any amp head |
Question: | I bought the cabinetand tried playing, do i need the head as well |
Answer: | Yes. The amp head powers the speaker cabinet. These cabinets are specially constructed to be paired with the VOX MV50 line of amp heads. However, a different amp head may work. Be sure to check the manual for the other amp head if they are not VOX MV50 and the manual for the Vox speaker cabinet to be sure it’s safe to use a different head. |
Question: | What if i set the amp head to 4ohms??? It actually sounds best there |
Answer: | at 4 ohms 1 of those cabs isn’t enough you are putting strain on the head and can burn it or the cab up you shoykd run it on 8 by itself 4 if you have 2 cabs |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i plug use a boss hm-2 pedal with this |
Answer: | It does have a very clean channel that is great for pedals, and some of the dirty channels sound good with additional effects as well... |
Question: | Is this one better than yamaha yhr series |
Answer: | It is comparable to THR. Yamaha has updated their line at some point so for example THR-30ii has a bit more features (like support for wireless guitar plugs, or couple of more of presets available out of the box), but sound-wise they're in the same ballpark. Most obvious difference is in design, vox looks like a purse, or a fancy flashy speaker, yamaha looks very industrial. |
Question: | does this item come with AC adaptor |
Answer: | Yes it does. |
Question: | can you use bluetooth headphones |
Answer: | You can use the device AS a bluetooth speaker, but no, it doesn't work the other way around. You CAN run the usb from the amp to a computer and use the bluetooth from the computer to run bluetooth headphones, but in my experience, this has a delay - it MAY work better if all your bluetooth stuff is 5.0 or newer though. |
