14 best tube amp for guitar

Tube amplifiers for guitars are a popular choice among musicians, especially in the realm of electric guitars, for their unique tonal characteristics and warm, rich sound. These amplifiers, often referred to as "tube amps" or "valve amps," use vacuum tubes (also known as valves) to amplify the electric guitar's signal. Here are some key aspects related to tube amps for guitars:

  1. Vacuum Tubes (Valves): Tube amps rely on vacuum tubes to amplify the guitar signal. These tubes are electronic components that control the flow of electrons and produce the amplification effect. There are typically two types of tubes in a guitar amp: preamp tubes (for initial signal shaping) and power tubes (for amplifying the signal to higher wattages).

  2. Warm and Organic Tone: One of the primary reasons guitarists prefer tube amps is the warmth and organic tone they provide. Tube amps produce a natural compression and harmonic distortion when pushed, resulting in a smooth and pleasant sound. Many players find this "tube saturation" desirable, especially for blues, rock, and classic rock genres.

  3. Volume and Clean Headroom: Tube amps are known for their dynamic response to playing dynamics. They can deliver clean tones at lower volumes and respond well to changes in picking intensity. As you increase the volume, tube amps start to break up and produce overdrive, creating a pleasing distortion.

  4. Combo Amps: Combo amps combine the amplifier and speaker into a single unit, making them convenient for small to medium-sized gigs and practice sessions. They are easy to transport and set up.

  5. Preamp and Power Amp Stages: Tube amps typically have two main stages: the preamp and the power amp. The preamp shapes the initial guitar signal, while the power amp amplifies it to the desired volume. The combination of different tube types and configurations in these stages contributes to the amp's unique tone.

  6. Amplifier Effects: Many tube amps include built-in effects such as reverb, tremolo, and sometimes even built-in distortion or overdrive. These effects can enhance the versatility of the amplifier.

  7. Maintenance: Tube amps require occasional maintenance, as vacuum tubes can wear out and need replacement. It's essential to bias the power tubes correctly when changing them to ensure optimal performance.

  8. Variety of Models: There are numerous manufacturers and models of tube amps, ranging from vintage classics like Fender Twin Reverb and Marshall Plexi to modern boutique offerings. Each has its unique tonal characteristics and features.

  9. Versatility: Tube amps are versatile and can be used with various guitar types and styles. Musicians often choose different amps based on their specific genre or playing preferences.

  10. Cabinet and Speaker Options: In addition to combo amps, tube amp heads are available, which can be paired with external speaker cabinets to customize the overall sound.

In summary, tube amplifiers for guitars are cherished for their warm, organic tone, dynamic response, and unique character. They come in various configurations, including combo amps and amp heads, and are popular among musicians for a wide range of musical styles. Tube amp enthusiasts appreciate the rich harmonic distortion and responsiveness these amplifiers provide.

Monoprice 611815 15Watt, 1 x 12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb

Based on 508 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Get superior guitar tone and flexibility using this 15-Watt, 1x12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb from Monoprice! As the title indicates, this guitar amplifier features a 15-watt tube power amplifier and a Celestion brand speaker. It uses three ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tubes and two EL84 power tubes for the amplifier section, plus a Celestion Red Truvox 1215 speaker. The EL84 tube is the tube that powered the Mullard amplifiers favored by the British Invasion bands of the 1960s. It can produce a full output from a relatively small signal and is therefore easily overdriven to produce that distinctive chiming, treble-heavy sound, especially when compared to the 6L6 tubes more commonly used in 1960s era American guitar amps. The amplifier handles frequencies between 80Hz and 10kHz, with hum and noise -75dB below the rated power and 0.5% total harmonic distortion. It includes a Low input and a High input, with the former attenuating the signal by approximately 50% and the latter being easier to overdrive. The cabinet is ported in the rear and features a leather handle, cloth speaker grill, and a cream-colored, textured, synthetic leather exterior with chrome corner guards. The amp features a genuine spring reverb with the ability to enable it remotely using a foot switch. It supports FX send and receive, so you can either connect it to an effects processor or use the send/receive connections as line out and line in connections. Two inputs allow you to select between the full power mode and a 1 watt limited amplification mode for recording or late night practice sessions.

User questions & answers

Question: This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks
Answer: No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars.
Question: What function does the tap button perform? Thanks
Answer: I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it.
Question: what size is speaker
Answer: It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean.
Question: is the power cord
Answer: Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp.

JOYO VIVO (EVH 5150-3) BanTamp Series Mini Amp Head 20 Watt Preamp 2 Channel Hybrid Tube Guitar Amplifier with Bluetooth

Based on 39 reviews Check latest price
  • VIVO from JOYO's BantamP series is a very compact and portable 20 Watt head. It tries to bring you the sound of a British classic that has been molded to give you the modern high gain tones that so many bands now use. back in the days, the big 100 Watt heads were "dimed" (all knobs on 10) to push the amplifier really hard and make it distort as much as possible.
  • Out of this came the first amps that were modified to have more gain right from the start. Often, the super saturated high gain sound of those days is referred to as"The Brown Sound"and this is the direction the VIVO excels in. screaming leads, chunky rhythm with a bit of a hole in the middle is where the VIVO strongest. If you wanna rock 'n'roll, VIVO is going to be your new best friend.
  • The VIVO also has a CLEAN channel that can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your "big" head is just not sensible.
  • The amp operates with a single 12AX7 tube in the preamp and uses a solid state power amp. the FX loop enables you to put your time based effects (or Phasers, Flangers and Choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy.
  • The icing on the cake is the Bluetooth connectivity is great to practice with PlayAlongs or to learn songs. Careful, the amp is small, but loud… its 20 Watts can be quite a handful. If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation.

Product features

Introduction

  • The FX loop on a guitar amplifier enables you to put your modulated based effects (Phaser, Flanger, Tremolo and Chorus) after the VIVO delivers its drive magic. The FX loop keeps the modulated effects pure and will prevent them from becoming muddied from the amp gain.
  • With 2 channels flick the VIVO amp to the CLEAN channel and use with your array of guitar pedals. The VIVO will keep it clean and puts everything in place for the drive of your life.
  • Headphone Out with Built in Cab Speaker Amp Simulation, the amp has a speaker out rated at 8Ω and can also be operated at 16Ω. Careful, the amp is small, but 20 Watts is loud and will deliver a handful, you get the same great tone as you would from a mega amp.
  • Pair your Bluetooth device to the BlueJay and jam along to your favorite Blues and Jazz, connect your external device via Bluetooth and play your audio tracks cleanly through the amps Bluetooth receiver channel.

User questions & answers

Question: My hotone makes a popping sound on the speaker when I turn it on. is it normal
Answer: Yes that is normal.
Question: Can this power a cabinet speaker like this one - crate gc-412s
Answer: It can be used, but it won't be as loud as you might think. However, if you ran this amp through at least a 100w power amp, then you'd get the decent output that you're looking for.
Question: Is the hotone mojo diamond for bass or guitar
Answer: While the Thunder is specifically designed for bass (to emulate an Ampeg SVT), the Mojo Diamond sounds quite good with a bass. Think of the Fender Bassman. While I appreciate the SVT grind on occasion, I prefer the Fender tone for bass. If you play both guitar and bass, it's a no-brainer. This one is more versatile. For the cleanest tone, turn the gain all the way down. It won't play loud but it's great for bedroom-level practice. For best use with a bass, use a speaker with high sensitivity. Just going from a speaker with, say, 89 db sensitivity to 92 db is equivalent to going from a 5 watt amp to a 10 watt amp.
Question: What are the real size of the item? What is the difference with the 4th item of the 2nd comparison
Answer: It's 5 inches long, 2 inches tall and 2 inches deep

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this for bass? Is there a combo version
Answer: Hello customer, thank you for the question, our tube amp series is designed for electric guitar only, we are also dedicated in producing the bass line for this kind of product, please keep on watching our AITONE store. The combo version in our store is MA-10B, a mini practice amp, but not tube. Thank you!
Question: Can you play a bass guitar with this amp
Answer: Hi, yes of course, you can.
Question: Would using a multi fx processor through the fx loop on this be better option then throughthe front of it? will it work with any mini cab rated for
Answer: Generally, you would want to put "pre-gain" effects in front of the loop (if you get your gain from the amp) - volume, wah, compression, etc. Effects that work well "post-gain" and are ideal for the loop are modulation effects (chorus, phaser, flanger, vibrato, etc.), delay, and reverb. This is a difficult split with a multi-effects unit unless you use it primarily for the effects that work well at one end or other of gain. That said, if you are getting your gain from your multi-effects and running the amp clean, you should put the multi-effects unit in the front of the amp and don't use loop at all.
Question: Is it loud enough with a 2x12 cab for gigging
Answer: Impedance above 8Ohm, the amplifier is loud enough, be careful.

User questions & answers

Question: are these balanced together? - Thanks
Answer: Yes they are matched ..
Question: Your description has me confused: (3) T-12AX7-S-JJ (1) T-EL84-JJ-MP, which includes: (2) T-EL84-JJ What exactly does the package include
Answer: Mine were matched. Prefer these over the preferred series
Question: this set fits on a laney cub 12r
Answer: I'm assuming you meant 6L6 tone. The answer is no. EL84 tubes do not sound like 6L6 tubes. While they both their respective cleans with crisp and chime or distortion under amp gain, they do not sound alike.
Question: Will this set work in a vox ac
Answer: I don't know about zinc axe hardware, I wouldn't buy it just because it is more corrosive. Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper. They both have almost the same density. Brass in comparison to zinc is super stable (corrodes much more slowly) and is more malleable (less brittle). I chose the Fender HiMass to upgrade a Player Mustang Bass, mainly for the appearance and how it is close in design to the original Leo Quan Badass, which I've used before. I'm thumpin' happy with this bridge and some fatter Diadarrio 50-105 flats. It looks like they jacked the price a little, so that sucks.

JOYO BantamP ATOMIC (Sound of AC 30) Dual Channel Hybrid Guitar Amplifier Tube Head with Bluetooth 20 Watt Preamp for Old-fashioned Rock Music

Based on 21 reviews Check latest price
    • The ATOMIC from Joyo’s BantamP series is a very compact and portable 20 Watt head. It can give you the British clean sound, the one that has hollow mids and a beautiful bell like character. This amp delivers a brilliant bite and has shaped the history of rock music through the ages. Its drive channel has a great mid gain sound and is just perfect for pop/rock sounds and indie rhythms.
    • It brings all of that history into your living room in a very compact way. You’ll be amazed by the crystal clear cleans and the cutting drive sounds.
    • The amp head operates with a single 12AX7 tube in the preamp and uses a solid state power amp. The FX loop enables you to put your time based effects (or Phasers, Flangers and Choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy.
    • The CLEAN channel can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your “big” head is just not sensible.
    • The amp is small but loud. It has a speaker out rated at 8Ω, but can also be operated at 16Ω with less power. If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation.
