14 best guitar amplifiers
Guitar amplifiers are essential components for electric guitarists and bassists, as they play a critical role in shaping and amplifying the instrument's sound. Here's what you need to know about guitar amplifiers:
Combo Amps: Combo amplifiers, or combo amps, are all-in-one units that include both the amplifier head and the speaker cabinet in a single enclosure. They are popular for their portability and convenience, making them a great choice for practice, small gigs, and recording.
Electric Guitar Amplifiers Preamps: Preamps in electric guitar amplifiers are responsible for the initial amplification of the guitar's signal. They often include tone-shaping controls such as gain, EQ (equalization), and volume. Many amplifiers have multiple channels or gain stages for achieving different tones, from clean to distorted.
Bass Guitar Amplifiers Preamps: Bass guitar amplifiers have specialized preamps designed to handle the lower frequencies produced by bass guitars. These preamps typically include EQ controls tailored to bass frequencies to shape the sound.
Amplifiers Effects: Many guitar amplifiers come with built-in effects to enhance the guitar's sound. Common effects found in amplifiers include reverb, delay, chorus, and overdrive/distortion. Some amplifiers also have built-in modeling technology that emulates the sounds of different amplifiers and effects pedals.
Speaker Cabinets: Speaker cabinets are where the sound from the amplifier is projected. They come in various configurations, with different sizes and numbers of speakers. The choice of speaker cabinet can significantly impact the overall tone and volume of the amplifier.
Amplifier Wattage: Amplifiers come in various wattage ratings, which determine their power output. Lower-wattage amps are suitable for practice and small venues, while higher-wattage amps are better for larger stages and venues. It's important to match the amplifier's wattage to the specific needs of your playing situation.
Tube vs. Solid-State: Guitar amplifiers can be classified as either tube (valve) or solid-state. Tube amplifiers use vacuum tubes to amplify the signal and are known for their warm and natural tone. Solid-state amplifiers use transistors and are often more lightweight and reliable, making them a practical choice for some musicians.
Hybrid Amplifiers: Hybrid amplifiers combine the characteristics of tube and solid-state amplification. They often feature a tube preamp section for warmth and a solid-state power amp for efficiency.
Head and Cabinet Configurations: Some guitarists prefer to use separate amplifier heads and speaker cabinets, allowing for greater flexibility in choosing different combinations to suit their needs.
Multi-Channel Amps: Many modern guitar amplifiers offer multiple channels, allowing you to switch between clean, crunch, and high-gain tones easily. This versatility is valuable for performing various musical styles.
Portability and Size: Consider the size and weight of the amplifier, especially if you need to transport it frequently. Smaller, lightweight amps are easier to carry, while larger amps may require road cases or assistance.
Maintenance: Tube amplifiers require periodic maintenance, including tube replacement, bias adjustments, and cleaning. Solid-state amplifiers generally require less maintenance but may still need occasional servicing.
Understanding the features and capabilities of different guitar amplifiers is essential for selecting the right one to match your playing style and performance needs. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced guitarist, choosing the right amplifier is crucial to achieving the tone you desire.

User questions & answers
Question: | can i record through garage band |
Answer: | honestly I've never separated the cabs I Velcro'd it stacked so its like a full stack, lemme go check THEN...................................... OK checked, heres the lo Down.. the chorus is in full stereo meaning it echos in both right and left speakers however its simultaneous and does not PAN left and right like an echoplex or true stereo echo that I could tell? you'll laugh anyways at the chord that comes with the 103, its like 24 inches long.. WHY? its phone plugs so EASY to find old home style phone cables, dunno your age maybe you've never seen one? yea int he day we had our phones connected to a wall outlet with a cable, its like a small like cat5 (rj45 is the standard name) you've seen cat5 its what your computer hooks up to the Ethernet with..all in all its WELL worth it its a GREAT little amp specially with the full stack setup, the echo works FANTASTIC and quite frankly I wish I had one that worked that well on my bigger stuff despite the non stereo panning, I have a Johnson Two Fifty and a Digitech GSP 2101 studio tube for all that stuff, yea man get a Johnson 150 250 or the digitech GSP 2101 if you want true stereo panning, WOW, I work it in QUAD and can dial it in however I like cuz its FULLY programmable with algorithms!!!tell you what tho I have mic's this little Blackstar and IT ROCKS!!! yup, if you have a board that does stereo panning then there ya go! crank n go, funny what I like to do is plug my acoustic into it then mic the Blackstar through the PA and recording or playing live that way SUCH A NICE CRISP CLEAN SOUND because yo don't have all that power in the way stepping on its own dork soaking up all the interference if ya know what I mean, try it you will be totally surprised, typing in this minuscule dialogue box is difficult at best, why so small Amazon?its a great little box (fact I tried em all cept the orange that I'm told is compatable and it smokes them ALL)not sure what you need it to do but for whatever the hunnerd for both is a FANTASTIC deal considering what it can do and the sound that can come out of it... distortion works well too, I love the little thing i use it at the park then in my bedroom so the neighbors can sleep and I don't have to pay finesfor an electric I use a nice 61 Strat that has some really really hot hand wound Gepettos then those run into a FULL Clapton mid boost, the works, yup so that lil boost in signal really makes that Blackstar a beast in its own rights..all in all I give it 10 stars with the other speaker |
Question: | it has a footswitch jack, can you go from a clean sound hit the switch and go into over drive for a solo |
Answer: | Blackstar has their own power supply specifically for this. Amazon sells it on it's own for around $20, and I believe when you buy the 3 pack, the Blackstar power supply comes with it. I can't say for sure, as I bought just the single unit. Save yourself the trouble and buy the 3-pack - the amp on it's own is incredible, and the stack is well worth the price. Just make sure it comes with the proprietary Blackstar power supply. |
Question: | Does Fuse work with this amp |
Answer: | absolutely not ! The fly 3 runs on 6volts /positive tip . When you buy the fly on amazon, the planet waves adaptor is suggested . My friend bought the fly to his son and pluged it on a 9 volts adapter...... he blew the amp . You may pay a little more but buy the right adapter, it works well and saves batteries |
Question: | What is in the box |
Answer: | Yes, for the extension cabinet, which expands this from 3w to 6w. The 3-pack is a good deal, because a) you get better volume but mainly because b) it includes the power supply, which means that c) the extension cabinet is virtually free. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks |
Answer: | Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck. |
Question: | Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound |
Answer: | It depends on the dealer's policy. |
Question: | Does it come with a wire |
Answer: | Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab. |
Question: | Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers |
Answer: | As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound . |

User questions & answers
Question: | This is a 40 watt amp? For 179... does it have built in distortion and reverb and delay? Thanks |
Answer: | No tubes, this is a solid state amp. But I must say it sounds very authentic to the legendary Vox amps from the sixties, either played clean or overdrive. I rate this amp five stars. |
Question: | What function does the tap button perform? Thanks |
Answer: | I have an Epiphone es339 and I am pretty happy with it. It's really not a bad little amp. A casino should sound good through it. |
Question: | what size is speaker |
Answer: | It is only 10w. I find it more frustrating that between the gain channel and clean, there's a large volume setting difference. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I switch between them to clean. |
Question: | is the power cord |
Answer: | Very little to none...Only time I have noticed any was when i had it powered through a AC plug in my SUV. In home use i have noticed none. It is a great little amp. |

Question: | What is input power as 110 volt, 220 Volt,or 110-240 Volt |
Answer: | Metal band in a 1000 seat venue-no, local bar,100 people or less, normal drummer should be OK. A friend of mine has the 100 watt version and has been playing local gigs at 50 watts, says its just loud enough, works fine. |
Question: | Does this come in black |
Answer: | Yes. The extra features that it brings makes the MKII much more useful. |
Question: | How does the Aux input work |
Answer: | Runs the amp at 50 watts, 25 or .5 watts, different levels depending on the volume you need. .5 watt is great for when the kids are sleeping. |
Question: | Is this suitable for an electric violin |
Answer: | There are a few more effects on the MkII and the pots for effects are now dual pots to make it easier to dial in... AMP IN is now on the Katana to allow you to plug in a multi-effects board etc and bypass the amp settings.. The "sneaky amps" available on the MkI are blocked out on the MkII.. but you get 5 more voice settings on the 5 amps available for the MkII.. newer and easier software.. Patches made for the MkI work with the MkII, but the MkII patches do not work on the MkI. |

Answer: | 110v |
Question: | Is this a good harmonica amp |
Answer: | No idea. My guess is that it would be overkill for a harmonica amp but I don't understand the specific needs of a harp player. You're always playing through a microphone for a harmonica, right? In that context it seems a bit ridiculous to spend this kind of money. Or is this question meant in jest? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would you say this is loud enough to play with a band |
Answer: | Plug into the wall |
Question: | Is it worth the extra money for mkii |
Answer: | This depends on the venue. For karaoke at home or in a very small room with a small crowd, it may be okay, but for large rooms or big crowds, you may want to invest in a good PA system. |
Question: | What does the power setting do |
Answer: | Comes with an AC power cord but does not come with the cord that goes from guitar to the amp. |
Question: | whats the differance between the 50 and the 50 mkII |
Answer: | Yes absolutely. It does have one speaker and makes plenty of sound for such a small amp. I use it for both my keyboard and acoustic/electric guitar... It has a standard input jack. You can also plug in a mic or headphones. It's very well made and lives up to Fender's quality. Good Luck, hope this helps! |

THE EVOLUTION OF A MODERN CLASSIC
Katana MkII takes the acclaimed Katana guitar amp series to the next level, turbocharging the core platform with more sounds, more effects, and more features. Newly voiced variations are now available for all five amp characters, doubling the tonal options. And the onboard effects categories have been expanded from three to five, providing even more real-time processing to choose from. The usability has been ramped up too, with a power amp input for modelers and multi-FX, updated editor software, and many other enhancements.
More Sounds, More Versatility
The stage-class Katana MkII lineup picks up where the first generation left off, building on the same core tones and features that have made the series such a worldwide smash. If you loved the original Katana amps, you'll love Katana MkII even more. And if you're new to the party, get ready for sound, feel, and versatility that soars far beyond its class.
Five Amp Characters, Ten Overall Tones
Katana MkII's five primary amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds, plus a dedicated voice optimized for acoustic-electric guitar. The characters have now been extended with newly voiced variations, providing a wider palette of tone options to craft your personal sound.
Five Effects At Once
Katana MkII now includes five simultaneous effects categories, putting the tone-shaping power of a massive pedalboard right inside your amp. Independent Booster, Mod, FX, Delay, and Reverb sections come loaded from the factory with three variations in each, providing 15 ready-to-play effects to choose from. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio lets you dive much deeper if you want—customize the sections with over 60 different effect types, change the order with four different chains, and much more.
Full-Throttle Sound Every Time You Plug In
Backed by BOSS's Tube Logic approach, Katana MkII delivers the authentic output distortion characteristics of genuine tube amplifiers, with the sound and feel becoming richer and more responsive as you turn up the volume. But unlike that classic tube amp, Katana MkII's variable Power Control makes it easy to fly in the sweet spot without getting fired from the gig or kicked out of the house. Just throttle back the overall volume as needed to enjoy inspiring, cranked-amp sound anywhere you play, from bedroom to stage.
Amplify Your External Gear
The Katana-50 MkII rocks as a standalone amp, but it also excels as a powered cabinet for a favorite preamp, modeler, or multi-effects unit. Connecting to the rear-panel Power Amp In jack bypasses Katana MkII's preamp and effects, letting you tap straight into the Tube Logic power section, complete with grab-and-go Power Control. And with BOSS Tone Studio, the input can be easily optimized for your particular gear with a high-pass filter and adjustable gain.
One-Touch Recall Of Custom Setups
One of the Katana-50 MkII's most powerful features is the ability to store favorite amp character and effects setups in Tone Setting memories for instant recall. After you've dialed in a sound with the panel controls, simply save it to the desired memory with a quick button hold. Four Tone Settings (two banks of two) are available, with fast selection right from the panel. It's also possible to connect external footswitches for hands-free control on the gig.
Ready-To-Mix Direct Tones
The Katana-50 MkII features USB and phones/recording outputs with mic'd cabinet emulation, letting you send mix-ready amp tones to a computer DAW or headphones. The direct sound can be shaped with three different Air Feel settings, which are accessible from BOSS Tone Studio. Two-channel USB operation is supported, allowing you to track in true stereo with many of Katana's modulation, EQ, delay, and reverb effects.
BOSS Tone Studio Enhancements
BOSS Tone Studio has also evolved alongside the Katana MkII amplifiers. The interface has been updated with a refreshed look, and a number of parameters have been consolidated into the main screen for faster workflow. There's also a dedicated Pedal FX category, making it easier to assign wah and pedal bend effects to a connected expression pedal. And if you're a first-gen Katana owner, it's possible to import your custom patches and use them all with Katana MkII.

Question: | How to change channel |
Answer: | You can use the "1 key to switch" function. Turn on the machine and press the power button once on the transmitter to change frequency, and the receiver will automatically match. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much |
Answer: | This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music! |
Question: | can i use peddles or effects with this amp |
Answer: | Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it. |
Question: | does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp. |
Question: | Does this have clean or dirty |
Answer: | One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty. |
