8 best bass guitar amp heads

Bass guitar amp heads are essential components of a bass guitarist's setup, designed to amplify the sound produced by the bass guitar. These amp heads are a crucial part of a bass guitar amplifier system, working in conjunction with a separate speaker cabinet to produce the desired sound. Here's what you need to know about bass guitar amp heads:

  1. Amplification Power (Wattage):

    • Bass amp heads come in a range of wattages, from small practice amps around 10-20 watts to powerful stage rigs with several hundred watts.
    • The choice of wattage depends on your playing needs, venue size, and desired volume level. Higher wattage amps are suitable for larger venues and louder performances.
  2. Solid-State vs. Tube (Valve) Amps:

    • Bass guitar amp heads can be either solid-state or tube (valve) amplifiers.
    • Solid-state amps are known for their reliability, durability, and clean, transparent sound. They are often lighter and more affordable.
    • Tube amps produce warm, natural overdrive when pushed to higher volumes and are favored by many bassists for their rich, classic tone.
  3. Tone Shaping Controls:

    • Most bass amp heads feature a variety of tone controls, including bass, midrange, treble, and sometimes a presence control.
    • These controls allow you to shape the EQ (equalization) of your bass sound, tailoring it to your preferences and the musical style you're playing.
  4. Gain and Volume Controls:

    • Gain and volume knobs help you control the level of distortion or overdrive in your sound.
    • Some amp heads have built-in overdrive circuits, while others rely on external effects pedals for distortion.
  5. DI (Direct Injection) Output:

    • Many modern bass amp heads come with a DI output, allowing you to send a direct, unamplified signal to a mixing console or recording equipment.
    • This is useful for live performances and studio recording, providing a clean, balanced signal to the sound engineer.
  6. Effects Loop:

    • Some bass amp heads include an effects loop, which allows you to connect and control external effects pedals in the signal chain.
  7. Speaker Outputs:

    • Bass amp heads typically have multiple speaker outputs, allowing you to connect to various speaker cabinets with different configurations and impedances.
  8. Portability and Weight:

    • Consider the weight and portability of the amp head, especially if you plan to transport it frequently for gigs or rehearsals.
  9. Brand and Model:

    • There are many reputable manufacturers of bass amp heads, each offering a unique sound and feature set. Popular brands include Ampeg, Fender, Gallien-Krueger, and more.

Choosing the right bass guitar amp head involves considering your playing style, preferred tone, and budget. It's essential to try out different models and configurations to find the one that suits your needs and helps you achieve your desired bass sound.

User questions & answers

Question: My hotone makes a popping sound on the speaker when I turn it on. is it normal
Answer: Yes that is normal.
Question: Can this power a cabinet speaker like this one - crate gc-412s
Answer: It can be used, but it won't be as loud as you might think. However, if you ran this amp through at least a 100w power amp, then you'd get the decent output that you're looking for.
Question: Is the hotone mojo diamond for bass or guitar
Answer: While the Thunder is specifically designed for bass (to emulate an Ampeg SVT), the Mojo Diamond sounds quite good with a bass. Think of the Fender Bassman. While I appreciate the SVT grind on occasion, I prefer the Fender tone for bass. If you play both guitar and bass, it's a no-brainer. This one is more versatile. For the cleanest tone, turn the gain all the way down. It won't play loud but it's great for bedroom-level practice. For best use with a bass, use a speaker with high sensitivity. Just going from a speaker with, say, 89 db sensitivity to 92 db is equivalent to going from a 5 watt amp to a 10 watt amp.
Question: What are the real size of the item? What is the difference with the 4th item of the 2nd comparison
Answer: It's 5 inches long, 2 inches tall and 2 inches deep

User questions & answers

Question: Can this drive two trace elliott elf 1x10 cabinets
Answer: I use it to drive two Ampeg 2x10 cabinets. The amp only has one speaker outlet so I connect it to the input on one cabinet and then using another cable connect the out from the first cabinet into the input on the second cabinet. I don’t know the inputs or outs on the Trace cabinet. You could use a one male 1/4” to two female 1/4” y cable to run cables to both cabinets. Two 8 ohm cabinets hooked up this was will give a 4 ohm load on the amp which is the lowest you want to go and will give you the most watts or loudness.
Question: Does it work with singapore power supply 220v
Answer: No. It doesn't work with Singapore Power Supply 220v. I made the mistake of ordering it, and was quite disappointed.
Question: What kind of cable jack plugs into speaker output
Answer: The speaker output is a quarter inch jack. There is also an XLR D.I. Output
Question: Can this be plugged into a PA system
Answer: Yes! It's got an XLR out to plug into your PA via mic cable.

Valeton

Product description

Bass Practice Amp

TAR-20B is a bass amp, but way more than just a practice amp. You might let the size fool you. But trust me this little fella is legit. It has 20w of pure analog power. The range of EQ is wide enough for you to shape your bass tone to anything you like, from Motown era vintage p-bass low mid thing to modern day super ultra fat low-end stuff. It does it all!

A Guitar Hack!

As you know, many bass amps were originally designed for the bass and then recognized as a guitar thing. Think about Bassman. TAR-20B is no stranger to that. I tried my Strat on it one time. It blew my mind. I mentioned the EQ range above, but haven't said anything about the GAIN. The GAIN circuit is wired to emulate the classic SVT style tone. But with the combination of GAIN and EQ, magic happens. You can the tonal characters of a lot of vintage amps. Twin, Tweed, JTM, AC 30, JC 120, the list goes on and on.

Keep It Light

The TAR-20B is designed to be compact and light-weighted so that you can put it in the gig bag and grab it on a go. But we added a little CAB SIM and headphone jack and AUX IN jack. So you can plug your instrument in and put your headphone on, then play anywhere and anytime, with any backing tracks you want. Not only it weights light, but also you can keep the volume light.

Other Features

TAR-20B has a chorus circuit in it for you to expand your sonic dimension. And as any bass guitar amps out there, it has an FX Loop for you to add additional effects in it. And it has a 4/8 Ohms compatible speaker output.

Specifications:

Power:18V DC center negative(included)

Current Consumption: 1500mA

Dimensions: 180mm(D)×95mm(W)×35mm(H)

Weight:816g

EQ:LOW: 70 Hz/MID: 800Hz/HIGH: 3.5kHz, ±9dB boost/cut range Max.

Output Power:20 watts

Speaker Out: 4/8 Ohms

  • Pure Analog Preamp Design with Super Wide Tonal Range from Motown Era Vintage P-Bass Low Mid Thing to Modern Day Super Ultra Fat Low-End Stuff
  • Max. 20W Pure Solid State Output Power sounds and responses like Vacuum Tubes Amp with Rich and Harmonic Tone
  • AUX IN & Phones jack with Cab Simulator for directly plugging into Audio Interface or PA System
  • Built-in Chorus for Expanding the Tone Dimensions; FX Loop for Hooking up other Effects
  • 4/8 Ohms Compatible Speaker Output

User questions & answers

Question: Can this work with a 15 inch passive speaker i.e. rockville rsg
Answer: yes it can as long as the impedance is correct. Check the specs to see your speaker has the right values.
Question: Will this work with a 16 ohm speaker cabinet
Answer: Yes, can be used with any 8/16 Ohms speaker output
Question: Is this good for a gig
Answer: Depends on your cab efficiency. With most medium volume gigs this amp won't work. It will work with acoustic gigs (drummer using brushes or is behind plexi, but is best used for bedroom to up to living room sized spaces.

User questions & answers

Question: is it operatable at 220V
Answer: Yes, there is a switch. Mine came set on 110.
Question: What is the difference between the "active" & "passive" inputs
Answer: Passive input signal goes directly active through additional gain
Question: Does the sound quality of this compare favorably with the tiny but more expensive gallien kreuger mb
Answer: I have in the past been a Ampeg guy, but saying that I have been impressed with the Quality of the Hartke. Its a real hard working amp head with a great low end and more than enough to play clubs. Its light weight which is a big plus and gives you all the control you need whether your playing screaming metal or funk it takes everything I've thrown at it.
Question: WILL THIS HEAD RUN 2 SETS OF 4ohm SPEAKERS
Answer: I wouldn't suggest it. There is just not enough power output here to run 2 - 4 ohm cabs. You need a bigger amp that can run bridge mono at 2 ohms if daisy chained or has separate outs for each cab with a higher wattage output. Of course this also depends on what the power handling and needs of each cab is. If its a bass cab then I'm betting its power needs are much higher than this amp can deliver. Call us we can help. Pro Audio Land 877-671-2200
Question: is this compatible with Orange obc 410 cabinets
Answer: I saw something impedance matching or ohms Impedance refers to a devices ability to limit current and refers to an active circuit. Resistance refers to linear or passive circuits. The devices mirror load impedances this is true whenever you see a matching implication. What this means is that there will be a current load on the device that it's being connected to. Current means less heat dissipation, more distortion, shorter life. An amplifier has an output with a 2 ohm impedance and is hooked up to 4 ohm speakers. The amplifier will see a 4 ohm impedance the speakers will see a 2 ohm impedance. For further reference. http://www.wseas.us/e-library/conferences/crete2002/papers/444-698.pdf
Question: Can this be played at bedroom level in an apartment
Answer: It can be pretty quiet. The EQ controls also help lower the bass resonance too. I have played it at night in an apartment multiple times and not had a complaint with the hydrive 410 cabinet.
Question: ese articulo es para bajo o guitarra
Answer: Bajo.
Question: Can I use this for Keyboards
Answer: I suppose you can, but it's for use with a bass cabinet so you won't get the high end on your keys.
