11 best bass amps

Bass amplifiers, often referred to as bass amps, are essential components for amplifying the sound of a bass guitar. They come in various types, including combo amps, and play a crucial role in shaping the bass guitar's tone and delivering it to an audience. Here is some information about bass amps:

  1. Combo Amps: Combo amps combine both the amplifier and the speaker in a single unit. They are a popular choice for beginners and bassists who prefer a compact and straightforward setup. Combo amps are easy to transport and typically include tone controls (EQ) and sometimes built-in effects.

  2. Preamp Section: In bass amps, the preamp section is where the initial signal processing occurs. It often includes controls for adjusting the bass, midrange, and treble frequencies. Some bass amps also feature a gain control to add warmth and saturation to the tone.

  3. Power Amp Section: The power amp section of a bass amp is responsible for amplifying the preamp's processed signal and driving the speaker(s). The wattage rating of the power amp determines the amp's overall volume and headroom.

  4. Speaker Cabinet Compatibility: When using combo amps, it's important to consider the compatibility of the amp and speaker cabinet. Some combo amps allow for external speaker cabinet connections, which can be useful if you want to expand your sound or experiment with different speaker combinations.

  5. Amplifier Effects: Some bass combo amps include built-in effects such as chorus, reverb, and overdrive/distortion. These effects can add versatility to your bass sound without the need for external pedals.

  6. Portability: Combo amps are generally more portable and user-friendly than separate amp heads and cabinets. They are suitable for practice sessions, small gigs, and rehearsals where portability is a priority.

  7. Tube vs.Solid-State vs. Hybrid: Bass combo amps can be tube (valve), solid-state (transistor), or hybrid. Tube amps provide warm, natural tones and are favored for their vintage sound. Solid-state amps are more reliable and affordable, offering cleaner tones. Hybrid amps combine tube and solid-state components for a balance between tone and reliability.

  8. Multiple Channels: Some bass combo amps offer multiple channels, allowing you to switch between different preset tones or use one channel for a clean sound and another for a distorted sound.

  9. Speaker Size: The size of the speaker(s) in a combo amp can affect the overall tone and projection. Larger speakers (e.g., 15-inch) tend to produce deeper bass tones, while smaller speakers (e.g., 10-inch) may offer tighter and punchier bass.

  10. Brand and Model Varieties: Various well-known brands produce bass combo amps, including Ampeg, Fender, Hartke, and more. Each brand may have its unique features and tonal characteristics, so it's essential to try different models to find the one that suits your preferences.

Bass combo amps are versatile and convenient options for bassists of all skill levels, offering a range of tones and features to meet different musical needs. The choice of a bass amp ultimately depends on your playing style, genre, budget, and desired tonal characteristics.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension
Answer: I have the 210 combo and 115 extension. The 115 comes with wheels and I put the 210 on a rock and roller cart. Extremely portable and very loud, it will get louder than your ears can stand. I would say the combo and 115 are plenty. Not worth getting the head and 410, just a waste of money and more weight to carry around.
Question: As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts
Answer: As a standalone unit the two 10 inch speakers are pushing 350 Watts at 8 ohms (Internal). You need to attach an external 8 ohm speaker cabinet to get 500 Watts. Attaching the external 8 ohm speaker cabinet brings the total impedance down to 4 ohms and that is when you get the maximum 500 Watts.
Question: I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band
Answer: I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w.
Question: is this amp usable in new zealand
Answer: I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.)

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use my acoustic I rig mic with this? With the headphone type plug
Answer: there is an AUX IN jack that takes a 3.5mm plug. Yes.
Question: Will this sound good if I’m Playin piano using my midi keyboard
Answer: Depends on how good your speakers are in your keyboard if your keyboard has stereo speakers they're probably going to sound better but as far as a little amp goes it's adequate
Question: what kind of cable do I need to connect to my Uke
Answer: Dear JOYO fan or user, it required a normal audio cable connect to Uke. thanks for your question.
Question: Can a microphone be plugged into this amplifier
Answer: Yes but you'll want to be aware that the amp takes a 1/4" plug, so you might need a converter. I also would be cautious if the mic requires phantom power. The amp doesnt provide it, so you'll need to get it elsewhere. If you have a mic preamp, then you could also plug the mic into that and the preamp into the aux jack, which would allow you to still be able to plug a guitar into the 1/4" jack. However be aware that the aux jack doesnt go through the volume/tone/gain, so you'll need to provide that elsewhere (which is why a preamp would be helpful)

Product features

Compact & Portable

  • If you want to carry the amplifier like the picture above, there are 2 hidden buckles on the sides of the amplifier to install the shoulder strap (NOT INCLUDED). Rotate until you find them, then hang your favorite shoulder strap.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks
Answer: Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.
Question: Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound
Answer: It depends on the dealer's policy.
Question: Does it come with a wire
Answer: Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab.
Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Answer: You tap it to alter the delay time or tremolo speed. Tap it twice and the time between taps becomes the setting for those functions.

User questions & answers

Question: does this support 220v
Answer: No
Question: This amp good for metal
Answer: Hello- This amp amp actually has some really great vintage patches as well as some heavy modern sounds. Its very versatile and I think you're able to get a "metal" sound at a low volume!
Question: I assume electric guitar is what this is for, but can I use it for an acoustic electric
Answer: You can use this amp for Acoustic or Electric but I would not recommend using this for Acoustic if that's what you're exclusively playing. If you're looking for a good acoustic amp, I would recommend the AS50D. You can find out more about the AS Series here: https://marshallamps.com/products/amplifiers/acoustic-soloist/
Question: Does it have a line out to plug into pa or does it have to be mic'd
Answer: No line out. Has a headphone jack and a mini USB output.
