User questions & answers
Question: | What is the factory margin of error |
Answer: | Yes it can. Salinity and temperature. Does a great job of both. |
Question: | Is this accurate when mixing salt and setting your salinity for water change. Iv heard can be off a little when hadn't been mixed that long |
Answer: | Yes, mine is always off -.002 compared to refractometers. All devices calibrated. Talk to Hanna support and was told it won’t match a refractometer lol. I like it because it’s fast and easy, if I want my water at 1.026, I just make sure the Hanna reads 1.023 I guess others haven’t had this problem but I do, or the others don’t know their salt mix is high |
Question: | Can this be used to measure salinity of saltwater fish tank aquarium? Thanks |
Answer: | 2 inches |
Question: | Have you tested the device against another? Inaccurate compared to calibrated refractometer |
Answer: | Two AAA batteries |

The meter is CE certified and comes with a 2-YEAR (6 months for the probe). NOTES: The instrument will NOT perform well for distilled or deionized water's pH measurement ( works well for conductivity). This is because distilled and deionized water do not have enough ions present for the electrode to function properly in pH measurement. To measure distilled or deionized water’s pH, users need to use a specialized pH meter such as Apera SX811-PW. Do NOT store the probe in distilled water or deionized water because they will cause damage to the glass membrane of the pH probe. Only use distilled water for rinsing the probe. Refer instruction manual before use.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to check the ec/ph in a soil solution |
Answer: | If damaged or isnt calibrating correctly. Unsure on longevity. |
Question: | for weekly use, How frequently does the probe need to be replaced |
Answer: | Yes. This unit has Auto Temperature Compensation from 0 to 50˚C |
Question: | How often should I change the probe |
Answer: | I don't know what the "factory" would say their margin of error is, but it's not uncommon for people to check this against a calibrated refractometer and find that it reads 0.002 low. In my saltwater tank, when my refractometer says 1.025, this checker will read 1.023. It's very handy and easy to use, plus confirms my tank temperature, so I use it often, realizing it won't read the same as my refractometer. I don't know or care which one is actually correct, the tank is fine at whatever level this actually is. |
Question: | Does this unit have auto temp. compensation (atc |
Answer: | You still want to wait for suspended salt to dissolve, salt goes though a chemical reaction while it’s mixing with water and during that reaction it’s harmful to any aquatic life in contact. So wait till it’s fully dissolved, example if I put 1 cup of my mix in 2 gallons of water mix it up and than test while salt isn’t dissolved I’ll get a reading of 17PPT, if I wait 10min while the power head stirs it up longer as it dissolves at 75f the salinity reading changes to close to 35PPT ether 1-2 ppt over depending kn how much salt I added. Ie how much unser a cup or slightly over a cup. Temperature plays a key role to, warmer water can hold more salt |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it supposed to come with oil at its end? The one I received had oil at the end of the checker |
Answer: | It comes with a cap on the end to keep the probe moist. You'll need to calibrate it when you receive the probe to ensure accuracy. |
Question: | Can it be used to test semi solid (like a peanut butter texture) food item and a liquid food item |
Answer: | Yes. We have been using it to test our yogurt and it is fine. |
Question: | I will be using this with my aquariums so figure anywhere from 7 - 8.4 for ph. i am confused as to which calibration solution i need |
Answer: | I am looking at the Hanna website and I am seeing that they offer a calibration solution specifically designed for this instrument in pouches and that they recommend that you use pH 4, 7 and 10 for calibration. Typically when you work with these types of instruments, you want to establish a range of known data points(in this case, pH) for the instrument to use as a comparison. Let the customer know that they do not need a buffer with a specific pH, but rather a series of solutions that will allow the instrument to compare a known pH with the material being tested(the aquarium water). What I would recommend is our pH Meter Calibration and Maintenance set. The Item number is 185740. Let me know if I provide additional assistance. |
Question: | Is the item durable? - Is this item easy to use? - What are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | The item is durable. It is easy to use It is essentially a pencil sized probe total size about 6 inches in length. It will require cleaning with distilled water to use so as not to contaminate the sample from previous ones. It appears quite accurate maybe too accurate as it will vary easily in output |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this ppm meter for hydroponics |
Answer: | Yes . This is one of the intended uses :) Just please note it's for TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), not for pH. In hydroponics applications, a ppm meter such as this one is used to determine your nutrient count. |
Question: | how can i test if the unit is accurate could i use distilled which i assume should be zero, thanks tom |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. This TDS meter is pre-calibrated in factory, no need calibrate again by customer, we do this to prevent as many calibration related mistakes as possible, and it's easier to use. To maintain the accuracy, it's better to rinse the probe with distilled water after each use. For your mentioned distilled water, it should read 0 ppm theoretically, but in actual application, if you can't keep test condition very clean, it may read 0-2ppm usually. |
Question: | Can this also check for ph |
Answer: | It Does not. It measure TDS , EC and Temperature 3 in 1. PH Meter is another tester. |
Question: | What kind of battery does it have |
Answer: | 1 x 3V button battery CR2032 , it's included in the water tester. Sincerely hope you enjoy the products we sell on Amazon! |
