9 best rf spectrum analyzers

A radio frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer is a crucial tool in the field of electrical testing and measurement, particularly in the domain of industrial and scientific applications. It allows professionals to analyze and visualize the frequency spectrum of RF signals.

Key features and functions of an RF spectrum analyzer include:

  1. Frequency Range and Resolution:

    • RF spectrum analyzers cover a wide frequency range, typically from kilohertz (kHz) to gigahertz (GHz), enabling the analysis of various RF signals.
  2. Display and Visualization:

    • Spectrum analyzers display signal amplitude or power against frequency. The display is typically a graph, where the x-axis represents frequency and the y-axis represents signal strength.
  3. Resolution Bandwidth (RBW):

    • RBW is the bandwidth over which the analyzer measures signal power. Adjusting the RBW helps in analyzing specific frequency components.
  4. Sensitivity and Dynamic Range:

    • Sensitivity is the smallest signal level that the analyzer can accurately measure. The dynamic range is the difference between the smallest and largest signals it can measure.
  5. Sweep Time:

    • The time taken by the analyzer to scan and display the entire frequency range is called sweep time. Faster sweep times enhance efficiency.
  6. Markers and Traces:

    • Markers are used to identify specific frequencies or amplitudes, aiding in signal analysis. Traces show the signal characteristics.
  7. Modulation Analysis:

    • Modern spectrum analyzers can analyze various signal modulations like amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and phase modulation (PM).
  8. Real-Time Analysis:

    • Some advanced spectrum analyzers offer real-time analysis capabilities to capture and analyze signals as they occur.
  9. Amplitude and Frequency Accuracy:

    • Accuracy in measuring amplitude and frequency is vital for precise signal analysis.
  10. Triggering:

    • Spectrum analyzers can trigger on specific events or signal characteristics, allowing users to capture specific data.
  11. Application Specific Analysis:

    • Some spectrum analyzers have pre-set functionalities tailored for specific applications, making analysis easier and more accurate.

RF spectrum analyzers are extensively used in various applications such as telecommunications, radio broadcasting, wireless communication, aerospace, defense, and manufacturing of electronic components. They play a critical role in troubleshooting, quality control, design verification, and research and development within these industries.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with the touch screen pen
Answer: Yes, a small plastic pen.
Question: Is this suitable for testing tv vhf and uhf signal strength
Answer: Not an expert on TV VHF and UHF, but I believe the TinySA range covers the UHF and VHF spectrum. With some calibration and manual setting (research on YouTube) it will provide accuracy that meets most needs. It is not a $2500 SA, so expect a certain amount of "ok, but its only $50 bucks". Also, ATTENUATE if signal strength/input is expected to be high. Again, research videos with professional testing from engineers. There's plenty of help online.
Question: can this be used to display and analyze noise on an AC power line
Answer: You might be better off with an oscilloscope. The TinySA does not have high input impedance and a direct measurement on the power line would likely damage it (and be very unsafe).
Question: is there a linux-based version of the app
Answer: Yes,it support

User questions & answers

Question: All i want to know if this detector gq emp-390 will detect 5ghz wifi signal and 5g cell phone
Answer: Yes it will detect 5GHz signal but not in all modes of operation. If it is the predominant source then the general Radio Frequency RF mode reading will reflect it. If it is a source mixed with others than all sources will be reported together as one value (sum/average over time...unknown. most likely average). It will not detect it in spectrum analyzer, by frequency, and show it's individual power level. Spectrum analyzer will detect 2.4GHz wifi. 5GHz is out of range of spectrum analyzer as is everything greater than 2.5GHz. It might detect presence of 5GHz data packet bytes in digital mode but I don't know for sure, have not tested this.
Question: Can it tell you how much emf your cell phone emits
Answer: yes it does, in 3 scales. some readings read a voltage per meter and another is electro-magnetic reading, I searched through alot and after receiving this I found it to be the best affordable technology in its class, and it even automatically identifies the difference between cell phone and power line EMF in digital readable format.
Question: Will this device analyze a 5 gig wifi signal like it does a 2.4 or
Answer: Yes, it does analyze 5 Ghz frequencies. If you are asking whether it will analyze 5G as in 5th generation Millimeter Waves, the answer is NO.. 5th Generation 5G will use frequencies between 30Ghz and 300Ghz... You can get one that costs about $40,000... As in, they are not available to the public .
Question: Is the 5g wifi signal the same as the new 5g cell phone signal? will it measure the new 5g phones? it is confusing: it says: "rf up to 10 ghz
Answer: The 5G wifi is referring to 5Ghz Wifi, and it is covered by this meter RF band. The 5G cell phone network is referring to 5th Generation cell phone network, it is nothing to do with 5GHz, basically its base band is much higher than 5Ghz

User questions & answers

Question: can , i...use this to align a parabolic 2.4 ghz.antenna to a wifi cell tower
Answer: Hello, The ISM Combo Spectrum Analyzer will measure frequencies between 240MHz - 960 MHz and also 2.35-2.55GHz. This unit will not align a parabolic 2.4 GHz antenna to a wifi cell tower.
Question: Good for detecting 5g
Answer: The unit I ordered is limited to the 2.4Ghz ISM band and sub-Ghz cellular bands. Don't know if the company makes a 5G version. Also the device works very well for my use and is unusually accurate for a handheld device.
Question: Does it demodulate the signal so you can listen to the signal either from the computer or standalone unit
Answer: No it does not. It will simply show all the frequencies that are being used for a given frequency range and their signal strength. It is not an actual receiver.
Question: Wierd questuon i know but i have a semi hobby semi pro lifestyle they would say. it's weird so i'll just say it. does it detect ghosts
Answer: Only if they are using an RF radio to communicate. And Yes it is a weird question.
