Answer:	You have to use the dovetails and the dove tail pin in order to hold the instrument. There is three spots on the indicator to mount the dovetail pin. The dial indicator pin can also move in order to reach a certain spit you are trying to dial in.

Answer:	Yes you need to check the thread, but the overall length of the tip matters. It needs to be the same. Stick a longer or shorter tip on a test indicator and it changes it's calibration. You must put the same length tip back on.
