14 best dial test indicators
Dial test indicators, often referred to simply as "dial indicators," are precision measurement tools used in dimensional measurement, test, and inspection processes within industrial and scientific applications. These instruments are designed to provide highly accurate and reliable measurements of linear displacements or deviations from a reference point. Here is what you should know about dial test indicators:
Purpose: Dial test indicators are primarily used for measuring small linear distances or variations in dimensions. They are commonly employed in quality control and metrology to ensure the accuracy and precision of manufactured parts.
Components: A typical dial test indicator consists of several components, including a spindle, a contact point, a gear mechanism, a dial face, and a housing. The spindle moves in response to the displacement being measured, while the gear mechanism translates this movement into a rotational motion of the dial face.
Contact Points: The contact point is the part of the dial indicator that makes physical contact with the object being measured. Different types of contact points are available to suit various measurement needs, including flat, conical, and cylindrical tips.
Dial Face: The dial face is marked with graduated scales, usually in increments of thousandths of an inch (or millimeters), allowing precise readings of the measured displacement. Some dial indicators also have additional dials for fine adjustments.
Mounting: Dial indicators can be mounted using various methods, such as magnetic bases, clamps, or articulated arms. This flexibility in mounting options makes them versatile tools for different measurement setups.
Applications: Dial test indicators find applications in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and research. They are used for tasks such as checking part dimensions, verifying concentricity, measuring runout, and aligning machine components.
Accuracy and Resolution: Dial indicators are known for their high accuracy and resolution. They are capable of measuring very small displacements with precision, making them indispensable for tasks requiring tight tolerances.
Calibration: Regular calibration is essential to maintain the accuracy of dial test indicators.Calibration ensures that the readings are consistent and reliable over time.
In summary, dial test indicators are vital tools in dimensional measurement and quality control processes across various industries. They provide accurate and repeatable measurements of linear displacements and are instrumental in ensuring the integrity of manufactured parts and products. These indicators are prized for their versatility, reliability, and ability to handle precise measurement tasks.

Balanced dials are used for reading the difference from a specific surface reference point. Continuous dials are used for direct readings and usually have a larger measurement range than balanced dials. Dial indicators are also called dial gauges, probes, and electronic indicators. These precision instruments measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can be easily read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Dial and dial test indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation.
User questions & answers
Question: | Have you been pleased with the accuracy of this indicator? Tested against interapid |
Answer: | Yes I have been pleased with the accuracy of this indicator. I use it to test the accuracy of my CNC router and tool runout, and I am able to hit zero repeatedly. I don't find any discrepancy in its measurement. |
Question: | Where can I buy replacement tips for this indicator? Does anyone have a link |
Answer: | Yes you need to check the thread, but the overall length of the tip matters. It needs to be the same. Stick a longer or shorter tip on a test indicator and it changes it's calibration. You must put the same length tip back on. |
Question: | Does the bezel turn freely or is it to tight |
Answer: | It turns so you can set where 0 is. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Not sure as it is at work. Probably China. I've used it for a few months now and it's been great. |
