User questions & answers
Question: | At continuous use how long does the battery last |
Answer: | I use it a lot and it is the best I have found so far and the battery holds for a long time, I do take the battery out of caliper after use, batteries do slowly train when left in electronic circuits, slow but have found I get longer use. |
Question: | Does this need to be calibrated? What about over time |
Answer: | It should be calibrated every time. All you need to do is close the jaws and press the zero button. I sometimes check mine with a known item like my digital scale weight. It’s length doesn’t change at all. Excellent tool and if you really doing something super precise, go with a dial type and calibration rods. |
Question: | Does it have a locking device |
Answer: | It sure does. A small locking screw on top. It is not a sterrit but it is a good quality caliper |
Question: | Made in USA |
Answer: | Mine has no markings as to place of manufacture. I'm sure it would be stamped proudly Made in USA, if it were. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the thumb friction wheel rotates freely once the jaws are closed at the require force |
Answer: | no they do not. they are not like micrometers which do have a ratchet or some sort of friction thimble that wont let you tighten them any more. calipers are not as precise as a micrometer because of this. |
Question: | This is the second one I have purchased. Both of them when I install the supplied battery the display just blinks/ flashes |
Answer: | Good afternoon,I apologize for the trouble. Please try using something dull and skinny such as a paperclip to try pushing the origin button. The origin button is very hard to press because it is not meant to be pressed on a regular basis. Our authorized Mitutoyo repair technicians use a dull rounded tip pick to press origin buttons. Also, the origin button sometimes needs to be pressed for up to 5 seconds. I reccomend that you try holding it for at least 10 seconds just to ensure you've held it long enough. Please let me know if this suggestions do not help and I will be happy to help you further!Thank you very much for your time and have a nice evening! Sincerely,WillMSI-Viking Gage |
Question: | Who needs a calibration certificate? I am DIY woodworker to use with a lathe etc, so would the non calibrated one work for me |
Answer: | It's generally something pertinent only to professional use of the item, and even then usually only under truly precision operations (if measuring to the resolution of a hundredth of an inch is sufficient for you, a calibration certificate would be overkill IMO); There's no substantive difference between a calibrated and non-calibrated caliper. However, some employers will require that their employees utilize measuring tools certified for use according to ISO/IEC standards; Basically, it helps to minimize (though doesn't fully prevent) human error and inconsistencies across measuring devices. Even if it doesn't create a pragmatic concern with regards to tolerances involved in building a given object, if two people using two identical calipers get different measurements from each of their own calipers then it can cause confusion and wasted time/money isolating what the "truth" is, and if those individuals are plugged into the overall production chain in a way where their measurements will be utilized by others then it can manifest in a ripple-effect that multiplies the severity of the discrepancy by the time the unit is nearing the end of the production line. DIYers generally shouldn't concern themselves with getting a calibration-certified unit they're DIYing themselves a space shuttle to withstand re-entry into the atmosphere. Or unless they just want to rest easy that their caliper is objectively precise to a ridiculous degree; If you want to be sure that the measurement you take of any given item is the same measurement that, say, a CIA machinist and engineer may derive when measuring the same item in their shop. |
Question: | is this caliper made in japan or some imported chinese junk from china |
Answer: | What is the current (February 2019) status on where the Amazon-sold Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Advanced ONsite Sensor, absolute scale Digital Caliper is made? Is it Japan or China? |
- metal
- Imported
- Dial face reads in both inch (black) and metric (red).
- Hardened stainless steel throughout.
- Inside, outside, step and depth measurement.
- Raised sliding surface prevents wear and defacement of graduations.
- Covered, stainless steel rack.
User questions & answers
Question: | does your caliper say "shock proof" in the dial? I just got mine, and and it does not say shock proof anywhere on it |
Answer: | I bought the caliper when we were at our home in Tampa FL and left it there so I can't look at the dial, but I do not remember it saying shockproof.I am satisfied with the operation and accuracy of the instrument. Do you mean electrically shockproof? It is metal and surely if exposed to a wire with voltage on it you could be shocked. If you are worried about the utility of the tool in a rough physical environment I would say it is fairly shockproof that way. Does the product description say it is "shockproof". And even if so it would not necessarily have to have that written or stamped on the instrument. |
Question: | Country of Manufacture? Think Amazon would get the clue to put this info on the product description |
Answer: | Really? That isn't even necessary any more. There is very little doubt that it's made "in Asia" (the actual country being both immaterial and ambiguous) just like everything else in your life is made "in Asia" because people in North America and Europe are too greedy to work for small paychecks. Even those very rare things that are final-assembled in North America are built entirely of parts made somewhere in Asia, from Asian raw materials.. |
Question: | is anyone able to shed some light on what this tool's resolution might be? nothing is listed on this page by the manufacturer |
Answer: | The scale is in 0.001 inches or 0.02 mm, so you should be able to read anything to the nearest thousandth of an inch or 2 hundredth of a millimeter. |
Question: | Are these accurate and durable? How's the quality of construction |
Answer: | An excellent buy for the money and well built. And yes they are accurate. Like any precision tool, they need to be handled carefully and kept clean. I've had mine for several months and having 40 plus years experience in machine shop, would recommend them. Are they as precision as a high end Mitotoyo? Probably not, but they don't cost $200 plus. So and excellent buy for the money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can i use this to measure screws? i mixed up a bunch of screws in a bag and have no idea what size is which |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this device to measure screws. You can check both the diameter of a screw and its length. You should know that some U.S. diameters are not given in ordinary length units. For example, sizes 6, 8 and 10. In order to classify the unknown screws, you could just get some known screws, measure them and write down the diameter of each of the known diameters, then compare the unknown ones with the figures you wrote down. On the other hand, length of screws in the U.S. always seem to be measured in inches, so you can set the caliper to read out in inches. You will have to translate, for example, 1.500 inches to 1-1/2 inches. However, the decimal numbers are seldom exactly what you expect. You have to assume that the numbers might vary by up to about 1/64 inch (about 0.016 inch). |
Question: | are these tips hardened? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, the tips are hardened so they don't flex and dull out. |
Question: | What kind of batteries do these calipers use |
Answer: | Copy and paste this - 50 357 Alkaline Watch Batteries LR44 AG13 SR44W Battery - for a lot of 50 battery cells that work for this Caliper. |
Question: | Does this item come pre-calibrated? Will you be able to provide document on the calibration |
Answer: | You cannot trace the calibration back to the NIST. If you crave calibration, then calibrate it yourself against a calibrated set of gages. You can't buy calibration for this price range. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does the fractions model do both fractions and decimals? Or is it just fractions |
Answer: | There are 2 models of the 6 inch caliper. Be sure to get the model that says WITH fractions, and it will have that feature. The model with fractions will read in 3 modes. Inches in decimals, mm in decimals, and inches in fractions. |
Question: | Mine keeps indicating 10 mm as 2.20mm. Is there some kind of an internal reset, or should it be replaced |
Answer: | I checked my iGauging Absolute with a .1275in metal blank and it measured 3.24mm correctly. Since the iGauging is similar to the Mitutoyo their instructions say to remove the battery, re-insert it, move the jaws together and hold down Origin for one second and zero point should be reset. Other than that, make sure of the 0/ABS switch is correctly set. If it is still bad, I would return it. |
Question: | Does it come with a case |
Answer: | Mine did, yes. It came with a simple black plastic case. Nothing special, but it gets the job done and protects the caliper well. |
Question: | where it is manufactured |
Answer: | P.R.O.C in other words China |

Question: | Is it true the roller wheel is stationary. ? does not move, Looking at the picture it looks like it does. This are useless |
Answer: | The wheel moves with your thumb and allows for precise controllable pressure between the jaws that measures what is between them. Nice instrument as long as you receive the same one I purchased with a red case. |
Question: | Is it true the roller wheel is stationary. ? does not move, Looking at the picture it looks like it does. This are useless |
Answer: | Unfortunately, the roller wheel was stationary on the one I purchased in 2017 (Accusize P920-S214). |
Question: | Made in USA |
Answer: | Nope |
Question: | Does this product have any certification paperwork |
Answer: | I don't recall receiving any certification paperwork other than the advertised calibrated to 0.001". I would also point out that the "roller" is stationary, does not roll, and as a result it's more difficult to get accurate readings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | which battery is needed for replacement |
Answer: | Uses CR2032. I bought 2 of these and both came with a spare battery |
Question: | Does this caliper have an auto shutoff? Thank you |
Answer: | They are suppose to have a auto shutoff. I remove the battery if it is not going to be used for a long time. |
Question: | Need correct measure of a single sheet of paper only - what to buy |
Answer: | The good benchtop micrometers would cost far more than you would likely want to spend considering the caliper you're looking at. I'd recommend looking at a 1 inch handheld micrometer (just search for micrometer and there will be several to choose from) with a precision 10x of these calipers. You'd be looking at .001" with these calipers vs .0001" with a micrometer. For the weights of paper you referenced this will be the scale of degradation you'll need. Also, even if you had multiple pieces of paper to try to amplify the stack height and get an approximate average you would not actually be approximating the average thickness. You would in fact be approximating the lamination coefficient that would tell you how efficiently the paper stacks vs a known weight (density) of a large single piece of paper. The small gaps between the layers due to the paper roughness would yield an elevated result because you're including air gaps in this hypothetical average thickness. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | mine says china, but the quality is amazing, probably the best thing ive gotten from china. i highly recomend you get it even if you dislike chinese tools, this is an exception. |
