Question:	can i use this to measure screws? i mixed up a bunch of screws in a bag and have no idea what size is which
Answer:	Yes, you can use this device to measure screws. You can check both the diameter of a screw and its length. You should know that some U.S. diameters are not given in ordinary length units. For example, sizes 6, 8 and 10. In order to classify the unknown screws, you could just get some known screws, measure them and write down the diameter of each of the known diameters, then compare the unknown ones with the figures you wrote down. On the other hand, length of screws in the U.S. always seem to be measured in inches, so you can set the caliper to read out in inches. You will have to translate, for example, 1.500 inches to 1-1/2 inches. However, the decimal numbers are seldom exactly what you expect. You have to assume that the numbers might vary by up to about 1/64 inch (about 0.016 inch).

Answer:	no they do not. they are not like micrometers which do have a ratchet or some sort of friction thimble that wont let you tighten them any more. calipers are not as precise as a micrometer because of this.

Answer:	Good afternoon,I apologize for the trouble. Please try using something dull and skinny such as a paperclip to try pushing the origin button. The origin button is very hard to press because it is not meant to be pressed on a regular basis. Our authorized Mitutoyo repair technicians use a dull rounded tip pick to press origin buttons. Also, the origin button sometimes needs to be pressed for up to 5 seconds. I reccomend that you try holding it for at least 10 seconds just to ensure you've held it long enough. Question:	Who needs a calibration certificate? I am DIY woodworker to use with a lathe etc, so would the non calibrated one work for me
Answer:	It's generally something pertinent only to professional use of the item, and even then usually only under truly precision operations (if measuring to the resolution of a hundredth of an inch is sufficient for you, a calibration certificate would be overkill IMO); There's no substantive difference between a calibrated and non-calibrated caliper. However, some employers will require that their employees utilize measuring tools certified for use according to ISO/IEC standards; Basically, it helps to minimize (though doesn't fully prevent) human error and inconsistencies across measuring devices. Even if it doesn't create a pragmatic concern with regards to tolerances involved in building a given object, if two people using two identical calipers get different measurements from each of their own calipers then it can cause confusion and wasted time/money isolating what the "truth" is, and if those individuals are plugged into the overall production chain in a way where their measurements will be utilized by others then it can manifest in a ripple-effect that multiplies the severity of the discrepancy by the time the unit is nearing the end of the production line. DIYers generally shouldn't concern themselves with getting a calibration-certified unit they're DIYing themselves a space shuttle to withstand re-entry into the atmosphere. Or unless they just want to rest easy that their caliper is objectively precise to a ridiculous degree; If you want to be sure that the measurement you take of any given item is the same measurement that, say, a CIA machinist and engineer may derive when measuring the same item in their shop.

Answer:	Other than the battery, the other compartment is for an RS-232 interface. This interface is for programming &/or data acquisition, proprietary interfaces that only the manufacturer have.

Answer:	Yes, you can. Measure the diameter of the nut from one flat side to the opposite flat side. That will be the size of the nut.

Answer:	The smallest inside will depend how deep you go, but close to surface I would say 1mm or even less. It goes up to 150mm.

Answer:	The ONLY under $50 to $100 calipers I have seen with a factory signed calibration check list are the Igaging Absolute Origin calipers. Not sure that even that would satisfy a metrology lab as even a Xerox subsidiary manufacturing facility I worked for, with it's own fully equipped inspection and metrology lab had a independent audit done by an outside NIST certified lab on a yearly basis to check it's reference standards and testing equipment. All new items requiring calibration from torque wrenches through micrometers and calipers were logged in and calibration checked before issuing to manufacturing too.

Answer:	Hi there, the battery case is actually easy to open. Follow these steps:1. Hold the unit vertically with the back of the caliper facing you. You should see the Metr. -ISO chart, NOT the digital display side!2. There are two tiny screws, you ONLY need to remove the left hand side screw using the included screwdriver. No need to loosen the screen located above the slide wheel!3. Make sure you holding the unit by the case cover for the battery, once you loosen the screw it will easily come and and reveal the battery.Hope this helps!

Changing the Battery from the Back is a Simple Task

To change the battery, just turn the caliper over so the LCD Display is facing down and the slider clamp screw is facing toward you (down), with the thumb roller up. Using the provided screwdriver, remove the screw on the same side as the slider clamp screw, using caution not to lose it since it is so small. Once the screw is removed, the battery cover on the opposite side will be loose and the battery will easily come out. Insert new battery with plus (+) side facing up. Replace cover, and while holding it in place, reinsert the screw and tighten. That’s it. Properly dispose of used battery.

Answer:	The good benchtop micrometers would cost far more than you would likely want to spend considering the caliper you're looking at. I'd recommend looking at a 1 inch handheld micrometer (just search for micrometer and there will be several to choose from) with a precision 10x of these calipers. You'd be looking at .001" with these calipers vs .0001" with a micrometer. For the weights of paper you referenced this will be the scale of degradation you'll need. Also, even if you had multiple pieces of paper to try to amplify the stack height and get an approximate average you would not actually be approximating the average thickness. You would in fact be approximating the lamination coefficient that would tell you how efficiently the paper stacks vs a known weight (density) of a large single piece of paper. The small gaps between the layers due to the paper roughness would yield an elevated result because you're including air gaps in this hypothetical average thickness.

Answer:	The description and box that it came in states, "CARBON FIBER COMPOSITES" and "MADE OF EXTRA STRONG CARBON FIBER COMPOSITES". It is not metal. No part of the calipers is metal. All of the black material that you see in the photos is black, non-metal material and presumably resin-based with chopped carbon fiber strands mixed in. It's made in China. If you need a tool for frequent, durable, long-lasting professional use I would recommend that you seek one made of metal. This device seems reasonable enough for light-duty infrequent use.

Question:	How do you change the battery in the ip54? there are no screws shown in any of the photos. the other vernier 8" caliper showes 2 screws but none on th
Answer:	The screw for the battery cover is in the back, above the thumb wheel. The cover has a slot on at the bottom so only 1 screw is required to secure the cover. There is a o-ring gasket around battery. The design of the cover allows only one way to close and secure the cover to the case.
Question:	Is this magnetically attracted? I assume so, if it's stainless steel. My other tools are stored on wall-mounted magnetic bars
Answer:	First, true stainless steel is not magnetically attracted. Hard Stainless steel however is often magnetically attracted due to its lower nickel content. In this case, the magnet I brought down to my workshop did stick to it. I will not however guaranty that a very strong magnet will not have an effect on the electronics but a normal magnetic strip should be safe. I hope this helps.
