13 best 6 in dial calipers

A 6-inch dial caliper is a precision measuring tool commonly used in various industries for dimensional measurement and inspection purposes. Here's what you need to know about 6-inch dial calipers:

  1. Design: Dial calipers consist of a main scale (usually 6 inches in length) with a sliding jaw and a dial indicator. The dial indicator is connected to the sliding jaw and displays measurements in thousandths of an inch (0.001") or hundredths of a millimeter (0.01 mm).

  2. Measurement: Dial calipers are used to measure the internal and external dimensions of objects with high accuracy. They can measure outside diameters, inside diameters, depths, and steps. The sliding jaw moves smoothly along the main scale, and the dial indicator provides a precise reading of the measurement.

  3. Accuracy: 6-inch dial calipers are known for their accuracy and repeatability. They are capable of providing measurements with a high degree of precision, making them essential tools in industries where exact measurements are critical.

  4. Versatility: Dial calipers are versatile and can be used in various settings, including manufacturing, machining, automotive, woodworking, and quality control. They are suitable for measuring a wide range of objects, from small components to larger workpieces.

  5. Maintenance: To ensure the accuracy of dial calipers, regular maintenance is essential. This includes keeping the caliper clean, protecting it from damage, and periodically calibrating it using calibration standards.

  6. Usage: When using a 6-inch dial caliper, the operator gently closes the jaws around the object being measured and reads the measurement on the dial indicator. The dial indicator typically has a rotating bezel that can be zeroed for relative measurements.

  7. Durability: Dial calipers are often made from materials like stainless steel to resist corrosion and maintain accuracy over time. They are designed to withstand rugged industrial environments.

  8. Comparison to Digital Calipers: Dial calipers are a traditional form of calipers, and in comparison to digital calipers, they don't require batteries. However, digital calipers may provide more straightforward readings for users who are not accustomed to reading dial indicators.

In summary, 6-inch dial calipers are precision measurement tools used in industrial and scientific applications to measure dimensions with a high level of accuracy and repeatability. They are versatile, durable, and widely used across various industries for quality control and precision machining.

User questions & answers

Question: does your caliper say "shock proof" in the dial? I just got mine, and and it does not say shock proof anywhere on it
Answer: I bought the caliper when we were at our home in Tampa FL and left it there so I can't look at the dial, but I do not remember it saying shockproof.I am satisfied with the operation and accuracy of the instrument. Do you mean electrically shockproof? It is metal and surely if exposed to a wire with voltage on it you could be shocked. If you are worried about the utility of the tool in a rough physical environment I would say it is fairly shockproof that way. Does the product description say it is "shockproof". And even if so it would not necessarily have to have that written or stamped on the instrument.
Question: Country of Manufacture? Think Amazon would get the clue to put this info on the product description
Answer: Really? That isn't even necessary any more. There is very little doubt that it's made "in Asia" (the actual country being both immaterial and ambiguous) just like everything else in your life is made "in Asia" because people in North America and Europe are too greedy to work for small paychecks. Even those very rare things that are final-assembled in North America are built entirely of parts made somewhere in Asia, from Asian raw materials..
Question: is anyone able to shed some light on what this tool's resolution might be? nothing is listed on this page by the manufacturer
Answer: The scale is in 0.001 inches or 0.02 mm, so you should be able to read anything to the nearest thousandth of an inch or 2 hundredth of a millimeter.
Question: Are these accurate and durable? How's the quality of construction
Answer: An excellent buy for the money and well built. And yes they are accurate. Like any precision tool, they need to be handled carefully and kept clean. I've had mine for several months and having 40 plus years experience in machine shop, would recommend them. Are they as precision as a high end Mitotoyo? Probably not, but they don't cost $200 plus. So and excellent buy for the money.

User questions & answers

Question: The System of Measurement listed above is metric. Isn't this model and English or inches model
Answer: The details and description on this page indicates inches in both measuring range (0-6") and on the dial unit of measure indicated in the upper center of the dial (.001"). Both using the " symbol abbreviation for inches. I JUST ordered one of these and certainly hope it is not metric when it arrives. js
Question: Is this American Made
Answer: It says on their website that the only calipers made by Starrett are the 120 series. Everybody says it's disappointing, but why do you think they are so cheap? The 120's are like $200

User questions & answers

Question: Does the case have a pinned hinge or is it a flexible plastic "hinge
Answer: It is some sort of a pinned hinge. Don't know if it is metal or plastic pin. It is definitely NOT a flexible plastic hinge. It's a good case. Not the most expensive case but the instrument is quality. It's worth it. One of my best purchases ever. I use it all the time.
Question: How do you calibrate the dial? Just got this and there are no instructions included and the dial is off by
Answer: Close the calipers making sure nothing is in the jaws. Loosen the knob on the bottom of the dial then rotate to dial to zero. Tighten the knob
Question: What kind of battery does the Avenger Digital Caliper use and can I buy a replacement battery door
Answer: The Oshlun MTDCF-06 6-Inch Stainless Steel Fractional Dial Caliper is a mechanical dial caliper and does not have a battery or battery door. I don't think it is the same as the "Avenger." I use it more than all my digital calipers and all micrometers. The Oshlun is one of my favorite things in the shop without a blade.
Question: How big is the dial
Answer: The dial is 1 1/2" across and very readable. The fractions are on the outer circle and printed in 1/16 1/8 3/16 and so on with 'tick marks' every 64th. The inner dial is in 100's of an inch. I'm very happy with this caliper. It replaced one the had the 100's on the outer dial and the fractions on the inner. It was hard to read. This is a very good price and quality.

Fowler Full Warranty Stainless Steel Shockproof Dial Caliper, 52-008-706-0, 0-6" Measuring Range, 0.001" Graduation Interval, Face Color White

Fowler

Based on 291 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Fowler Shockproof stainless steel dial caliper has dial graduations of 0.001" with 0.001" accuracy, shockproof anti-backlash control, a sliding jaw with a lock, and a covered rack. This caliper is used for measuring inside dimensions (ID), outside dimensions (OD), depth, and step. This product has a 1 year warranty offered by Fowler High Precision. If you experience any problem contact Fowler directly for warranty claims.

Shockproof spring anti-backlash control with a heavy-duty spring offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls that prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; spring anti-backlash systems use a spring to add a compressive force, thereby minimizing backlash.

This caliper has a knurled lock screw to hold the sliding jaw in position and help ensure a consistent measurement. A covered rack prevents dirt and debris from clogging the gear, and helps prevent measurement errors. A thumb-operated fine adjustment roller allows for one-handed use.

The caliper measures 0.10" per revolution of the dial. The dial has 0.001" graduations, and the beam has engraved 0.1" graduations. The hardened stainless steel components, including the beam, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Self-contained movement eliminates gear misalignment, while the dual pinion drive mechanism reduces wear on the rack and pinion. An adjustable dial enables setting zero. The hardened stainless steel is polished to a satin chrome finish, to help prevent glare. This caliper comes with a fitted case.

Dial calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to measure inside, outside, and step measurements in standard or metric units. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it to take measurements. A circular dial indicator is fixed to the movable jaw on a toothed gear rack that transfers movement of the jaws to the dial needle. The base measurement is taken from the long beam, which provides the initial whole measurement in inches or centimeters, and added to the dial reading, which provides fractional measurements in inches or millimeters. A locking mechanism provides the ability to take differential measurements for determining the difference in measurements between two objects. Compared to digital calipers, dial calipers are more durable, but are more susceptible to shock damage and prone to getting dirt in the gears, which can cause accuracy problems. Vernier calipers are more durable than dial calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Dial calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, and carpentry.

Fowler, an American company, manufactures inspection and measurement instruments such as electronic indicators, calipers, bore gages, and digital scales. The company, founded in 1946, is headquartered in Newton, MA.
