Answer: | Not all gemstones emit high enough levels of radiation that can be discerned above ambient levels of radiation and it depends on the actual level of radiation the stone emits. Stones that have been exposed to radiation to change their color will probably not register. I have some uranium marbles that are not detected by this counter. My wife was subjected to a PET scan, last year and read 790 CPM from a distance of 6 feet. |

Answer: | The GMC-300 is easy to use and low priced as an entry level radiation detector. I use mine to monitor background levels of radiation as I have yet to find an highly active source. Here in central BC, Canada I get 14 to 22 cpm, with a high of 30 cpm. It appears to decrease after a rain fall. The only thing missing with the GMC-300 is a radiation standard but I can understand why. |

Answer: | I’m a radiation protection technician. If this device works the way that it says it does then it would still not detect alpha or neutron radiation. If you suspect something making into your food or water then I would be most concerned with Alpha particles and this doesn’t measure those. You shouldn’t have to worry about neutron radiation though and unless you’re using it to measure something you’re ingesting then alpha radiation really isn’t an issue. Geiger- Mueller counter can detect beta and gamma/X-ray radiation. I’d be interested to see how they measure Beta since you really need a gas chamber to measure it accurately. I would be most worried about beta and gamma radiation if you’re talking about an area that may have had nuclear weapons detonates years ago. This claims it can measure for those. If it can it would be a good device to determine if your surroundings are still giving off radiation. |

Answer: | As a former designer of electronic circuits, I can opine with 99% certainty that it is NOT EMP proof. I say that because the outside is plastic (a non-shielding material), and the LCD screen also would not block radiation. I think to add EMP protection would raise the cost considerably! FYI, I store my detector, when not in use, inside a metal container (with other electronics) because of its vulnerability to EMPs. |

Answer: | It detects beta, gamma and X-rays. No Alpha because it is redundant and unnecessary. Alpha particles are relatively "large" and won't pass even through a sheet of paper or a layer of skin, let alone plastic casing of a detector. It also emits only a few inches from source. Answer: | Testing food in general is one of the most common questions we receive and also happens to be one of the most difficult ones to answer. In short: - Can food be tested with a hand-held Geiger Counter? Yes. - Will it detect elevated levels of radioactive materials, if present? Yes. - Is it absolutely safe to eat your fish after you scanned it and the result was negative? No, not necessarily. This is not a sensitivity issue, but is simply because radiation emitted from a tiny contaminant will be masked by the natural background radiation that's all around us. Technically speaking, everything is radioactive, even we are. So it would be like looking for a specific water drop in a pond. If the natural background radiation around you is .10 uSv/h and contaminant in the fish emits .02 uSv/h, then geiger counter will naturally continue showing .10, because that's how many radiation particles it is detecting in your immediate vicinity. This means that no matter how sensitive, expensive or calibrated your equipment is, the only way to be absolutely sure that food is safe would be to test it in a lab, where a piece of produce is placed inside a special lead capsule that isolates it completely from any background radiation. There is a lengthy scientific procedure of setting up such tests. Many manufacturers will claim that their detectors will works just as well, but as you can clearly tell, that is a marketing scheme. The only sure way of accurately testing food for radiation is in a lab. Period. Having said that, there are still ways to considerably improve you chances of detecting contamination. Here are some practical tips in getting the most out of your RADEX geiger counter. Whenever anything is measured for radiation, the mass / size of the object being scanned matters. Don't try to detect radiation in a single berry, a mushroom or a cup of water. Unless these are highly contaminated, there would be few particle streams emanating from a smaller volume hence the chances of detection are that much lower. Instead, try scanning an entire basket-full of produce, or a tank of water - the number of particle sources would be that much greater and easier to detect. If it's fish your are measuring, try to have as much of that tuna as possible. Turn the unit on and place it right next to the object (you can use a simple plastic bag to protect the unit - that won't effect sensitivity) for about 40 seconds. Then move a few inches to the side, and so on: continue displacing the detector by the distance of its width every minute or so, moving alongside of the object being scanned. So basically from head to tail. That would give you the highest chances of detection. However, please keep in mind, that even if after scanning it this way, there is still a chance that it may contain radioactive elements that are above the permissible levels for digestion. This is why we NEVER recommend to use Geiger counters for food testing unless in dire situations. We hope this clarifies matter a bit. |

Answer: | Cylindrical low voltage SBM20-1 tube. Only does Beta and Gamma. Its does work well. A nuclear plant recently had a leak about 245 miles north of me, and it went bats as I was downwind and it showed elevated radiation at 6 times my normal background for 45 seconds so I know I caught a wisp of it. This is not professional lab equipment, but is good value for what I paid for it. The battery life is awesome too with LSD rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries. I run it 24/7. At this price, I do not really care about tube life.Just do not expect professional grade results from it, but it is good enough and a good value for the money. |

This model uses two SBM20-1 type Geiger Muller counters, one each for beta- and gamma-rays. The use of two separate sensors allowed us to reduce time of observation to 26 seconds while improving accuracy and precision of results. The range of indications was expanded 100 times, compared to RADEX RD1503.
RD1706 can register the value of a doze-rate as high as 999.0 uSv/h. Time of observation automatically adjusts from 26 seconds to as low as 1 second when presence of strong radiation sources is detected. This is necessary to ensure safety of professionals working with or operating ionizing radiation sources.
Most other features from the RADEX family were also retained, i.e. the usual frame with a large LCD screen, three operation buttons, battery charge indicator, display backlighting and personal settings like threshold alarm activation, alarm strength, backlight option.

Answer: | These devices do not have individual calibration certificates. In this respect they are like thermometers. The model line undergoes certification and random testing by a third-party lab in Germany. CE certificates are issued. We can email testing protocols (in German) and the CE certification. These units are calibrated at our factory using Cs-137 isotope. A QC engineers tests and signs off on every unit. The initial setup lasts several years. |

Answer: | It is a radiation detector, so yes it will work on food. It will detect the presence of radiation within the limits of the device. That is to say that extremely low levels will not be detected; that takes special equipment. |
Question: | How does it compare to the RADEX RD1212? The units are within about $15 of each other. Why this one over the RD1212? I am primarily interested in testing food and outside of small liquid containers |
Answer: | As I don't own teh RD1212, I am not able to make compare the two.The 1706 seems easy to use once you overlook the unusual phrasing in the operators manual. I tested in on an onld radium dial watch and it worked well in all alerting modes. The unit does seem well built and compact. |
