User questions & answers

Question: Does this unit beep or click? I have seen mixed info. Could someone upload a video of it
Answer: That's an interesting question. The audio output is a tone generator. But that audio output is pulsed quickly so the tone sounds more like a click than a beep. Technically, they're both right.
Question: Does it have an end sensitive wand
Answer: I'm not sure what you mean here. The wand has an open end that exposes the mica window of the GM tube for the detection of alpha particles. In the photograph the wand has a plastic end cap on it that I recommend you keep on unless you are specifically trying to detect alpha particles. The mica window of the GM tube is thin and easily damaged.
Question: Will this measure radon in your house
Answer: The GCA-07W is sensitive to alpha radiation given off by radon. However this is not the instrument to use to detect or measure Radon in the home. There are specialty instruments and equipment available for just this purpose.
Question: Can this measure radiation in ocean fish
Answer: This is a complex question. The GCA-07W can detect alpha, beta, x-ray and gamma radiation. Checking fish or food for radioactive contamination is a little difficult and Geiger counters, (from us or any other manufacturer) is not the ideal instrument to do so, here's why. The GCA-07W Geiger counter can detect alpha radiation. However if the fish (or food) being tested has a alpha radiation emitter internally, the food itself will block the alpha radiation and stop it from being detected. If the alpha radiation contamination is on the surface of the fish (unlikely), it can be detected. Similarly, if the fish has a beta radiation contamination internally, let's say a SR-90 contamination, the water in the flesh of the fish will effectively block the beta radiation from being detected. Again if the beta contamination is on the surface of the fish (unlikely), it can be detected. With gamma radiation the situation changes. Gamma radiation can penetrate the flesh of the fish to be detected. The problem arises is that low level contamination gamma radiation from let's say a CS-137 contamination will be indistinguishable from normal background radiation. So to test for this contamination , one method a laboratory may perform is a gamma spectroscopy (scintillation detector) to determine the source of the radiation. In the case of testing for alpha and beta radiation mentioned before, a lab might incinerate the food or fish in question down to ash. Without the water blocking radiation it becomes easier to test the material for beta and alpha contamination. On the Images website we have a number of nuclear experiments and articles. We have an article on testing food for radioactive contamination that goes into greater detail than I can here.I hope this information helps.

Question: I get all that stuff? Or just the unit with its little probe? Looks to complicated
Answer: , sorry to say you got scammed this product has no value whatsoever
Question: My understanding is that g/m tube units like this "saturate" at higher levels (nuclear war or accident) of radiation, and indicate very low. true
Answer: It should have a cable with a transformer That goes to the electricity and the white triangular unit (I think left side) the array which should be connected to the white triangular unit ( I think right side). You put only the array in the water the triangular white unit should always be outside. the water should not cover the array. Once everything is set and you are ready to use you turn it on by pressing it stops automatically at 30 minutes
Question: Does " nrc certification ready mean " that i still have to send the item to a us lab. and spend 120 $ extra ? or is it all set to use
Answer: Any array with a standard 1/4 inch jack will work fine. We suggest for the best detox to use Super Duty Arrays. You can find this unit with Super Duty arrays if you put this UPS code in the Amazon Search Box. 633841997187
Question: How do i get an nrc certification ? how much is it ? whom do i pay ? thank you

User questions & answers

Question: Why do they show it in use near hv transformers? does it also detect em emissions in that range
Answer: No, you would need and EMF (electromagnetic field) detector for that: https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Electro-Magnetic-Detector-Monitor/dp/B007ZBETWC/ EM emissions are non-ionizing radiation, which means the particles do not have enough charge to cause damage to tissue. Geiger counters detect ionizing radiation, the dangerous kind: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, X-ray, etc. Illustration: https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/ionizing-radiation.jpg https://quartarad.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/types-of-radiation.gif I hope this clarifies matters a bit!
Question: Is this detector EMP proof
Answer: As a former designer of electronic circuits, I can opine with 99% certainty that it is NOT EMP proof. I say that because the outside is plastic (a non-shielding material), and the LCD screen also would not block radiation. I think to add EMP protection would raise the cost considerably! FYI, I store my detector, when not in use, inside a metal container (with other electronics) because of its vulnerability to EMPs.
Question: What is the difference between this model and the RD1503+ without dosimeter model
Answer: This model does have the dosimeter function (see "DOSE" on the LCD screen), which means that it can switch between immediate radiation levels ("NOW") and accumulated dosage over time ("DOSE").Very useful when working in environments with even slightly raised radiation levels (warehouses, junk yards, granite canyons, treatment plants, etc.)
Question: Can it detect all of "alpha", "beta", and "gamma
Answer: It detects beta, gamma and X-rays. No Alpha because it is redundant and unnecessary. Alpha particles are relatively "large" and won't pass even through a sheet of paper or a layer of skin, let alone plastic casing of a detector. It also emits only a few inches from source. Illustration: http://images.slideplayer.com/32/9849845/slides/slide_10.jpg One would need a special "pancake" appliance to detect it, and those cost up from $ 500. In my opinion, those are only useful for conducting experiments in a lab environment, or under some very specific circumstances. Another reason for not detecting Alpha: nearly every radioactive isotope that emits Alpha will also emit a lot more beta and/or gamma (usually both), which will be detected by the sensor. Hope this clarifies matter a bit.

  • User questions & answers

Question: How does the dosimeter work? Does it have to be turned on to track your dosage? Do you have to carry it at all times for a time period, like a week
Answer: Great question! Any kind of nuclear dosimeters, including SOEKS 112, have to be turned ON and on the person/in the environment in order to record the radiation dosage. It has to be carried around to accumulate the dose. SOEKS 112 can show real time radiation or the accumulated dose with a single press of a button.
Question: At what number on the display should I turn and run? Is this the same unit model sold by "Mirasafety
Answer: You should see numbers below 0.40 uSv/h in the USA for natural radiation background. It doesn't mean you have to run yet but definitely something to investigate as to why the numbers are higher than naturally should be. If you see numbers higher than 1 uSv/h - it's a good idea to increase your pace with the toes pointing away from the object or the area with high radiation. SOEKS is the original manufacturer of this portable Geiger counter, including the ones that are sold by Mira safety. It's always better to get our detectors directly from the manufacturer as we guarantee that they are stored properly and up to date with the latest updates. Regards, Andrew from SOEKS USA
Question: Will it or any software track history on iOS device
Answer: No, this is a standalone Geiger counter/Dosimeter that makes and keeps all the measurements on the meter itself.
Question: Why it's so slow? You can die before you see real radiation numbers
Answer: When High radiation is detected, you’ll know it right away - there will be a spike in the readings, the audio clicks will become very frequent, and the visual indicator (LED) will blink rapidly. No way to miss that! For subtle changes in the radiation background the maximum time for the most accurate readings takes only 2 minutes, usually less. 120 seconds is not enough time to get a lethal dose even during the Chernobyl disaster. And the best part, that this small Geiger counter (dosimeter) reads up to 999 mSv (999 Sv), while the Geiger counters initially used in Chernobyl only read up to 34 mSv, hence the delay for the alarm and the emergency response.

Question: Will it detect alpha, beta, and gamma at the same time
Answer: Yes. It detects alpha, beta, and gamma at the same time.
Question: Are these ansi n323 certified first accuracy
Answer: This unit is calibrated in GQ Electronics Lab, not others. It is a general-purpose Geiger Counter.
Question: will it detect radiation in water
Answer: If your looking to "see" the radon particles in the water probably won't notice much difference between the water and background radiation unless it was a significant amount... I would recommend putting the water in a glass or beaker and set the monitor on top to make readings... I may try that myself and see what results are if any..
Question: Does this unit detect and mesure the radiation from a smoke detector
Answer: The GM tube of the GMC-600 Plus is a pancake one with a thin Mica Window. This allows also Alpha radiation to enter the GM tube and to detect it. A smoke detector can work with Am-241 isotopes and uses Alpha radiation for smoke detection. But all detetctors I know are very well shielded, so no Alpha radiation weill leave the smoke detector. Therefore, no external radiation detector will be able to detect the internal Alpha radiation of Am-241! Regards Uwe Z.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this also detect and measure Radon gas
Answer: Radon gas emits Alpha radiation, which Geiger-Mueller detectors cannot see. The Alpha particles will be stopped by the casing of the detector and will never be counted. If you really want to detect Alpha particles, you need a "scintillation" detector, that will have a microscopically thin window to allow the particles into the detection chamber, typically of an aluminized mylar sheet. This detector states it will detect beta type and gamma / X-ray radiation only.
Question: what is the difference between this version and the outdoor version that costs $2b more
Answer: I don't have the outdoor version, but I would expect that it is more ruggedized.
Question: This is scaled to detect exposure in the µSv range. Can it be switched to detect exposure in the Sv range
Answer: No, that would not be practical. Sv (sievert) range is abnormally high - it's Chernobyl-level exposure and instant radiation sickness. 1 Sv (sievert) = 1000 mSv (millisieverts) 1 millisievert = 1000 uSv (microsieverts)In most households radiation levels are circa 0.20 uSv/h (microsieverts per hour)Illustrated article with real-life examples is here:https://www.allianz.com/en/about_us/open-knowledge/topics/environment/articles/110407-radiation-how-much-is-harmful.html/
Question: Will this device be just as effective in radiation detection if it's inside a shirt pocket
Answer: Yes, the fabric would block little if any background radiation. It has many modes so you can have it display a received dose or the ambient radiation.

    Product features

Question: What is the difference between this and the gmc-600 plus geiger counter? the price of this is way less than the gmc-600 plus which looks similar
Answer: After you receive the GCA-06W Geiger counter, you contact the manufacturer, Images SI Inc., to ship the GCA-06W to the manufacturer for an NRC certification. The cost for the NRC certification is $125.00 plus shipping. The GCA-06W is sent to a independent U.S. government licensed lab that will perform the NRC certification. The process takes about two weeks after receipt of the GCA-06W by the manufacturer.
Question: What is the difference between this and the 700 version
Answer: Good question. This does not maintain the pH. You would still have to do that with your chemical program

Question: I'm going to have a radioactive iodine treatment will this device detect the radiation being admitted from my body
Answer: Yes, I would purchase a CS-137 radioactive isotope with an activity of 10 uCi .
Question: what's the difference between this and the plus version
Answer: Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We had removed that photograph a long time ago. And I assume you are looking at the photograph that shows a sample of the Images SI Inc.'s product line. No you are not receiving all those products. You are only receiving the GCA-06W Digital Geiger counter. I have contacted Amazon to have that photograph and another photograph removed.
Question: Does this product detect alpha, beta, and gamma radiation
Answer: All GM tubes saturate at high radiation levels. This particular GM tube would saturate around 10,000 pulses per second. We have laboratory tests up to one Rad of radiation. At this high level the Geiger counter is still responding properly. We do not have the facilities to test above one Rad radiation level to determine how this Geiger counter would respond. Sorry. If you want something to detect 1-10 Rads of radiation I would recommend purchasing an old 1960's ionization chamber civil defense meter off of ebay.
Question: what's the difference between the gmc-500 and the gmc500 plus
Answer: Yes, ready means it is ready to be NRC certified. You would need to spend an additional $125.00 to have this certification performed. The Digital Geiger counter is ready to use, with or without the NRC certification. The NRC certification proves the accuracy of the radiation readings.

    Product description

ATTENTION:   As of August 1st, 2013, Quarta-Rad upgraded RADEX 1503 to RADEX 1503 Plus. Upgraded firmware, additional features, and cost the same as RADEX 1503. Don't be fooled by online vendors selling old and unsupported RADEX 1503 model as new. When you buy RADEX 1503 online, make sure it is RADEX 1503 Plus (Radex 1503+)

Now there is a better, stronger and more advanced version of our best-selling workhorse – the RD1503.

Ever since the introduction of the original RD1503, customers have been asking for additional functions and requested certain improvements on the existing design. We have listened and incorporated many new capabilities into RD1503+:

New and Improved Features of RADEX RD1503+

+ Graduated change of a threshold signal in the range from 0.10 to 0.90 µSv/h with an 0.10 µSv/h interval (available in individual settings).

+ Value of the background dose rate is saved even when the device is turned off.

+ Now displays the difference of the dose rate between the averaged and background values.

+ Includes vibration signal and audio alarm (both adjustable).

+ Added animation of the pressed command button (the icon of the button starts blinking on the display).

This new device allows a quick and easy way to check radiation background of top soil, non-edibles and interior premises.

The quality of indication of any dosimeter depends primarily on the built-in detector of ionizing radiation. RADEX RD1503+ contains a low-voltage SBM20-1 type Geiger-Muller counter of beta- and gamma-radiation which is found used in professional dosimetric equipment.

An expert scientific tool that’s made for an average Joe.

Quick, Simple, and now better than ever!

Question: Is this something i can use in a supermarket to check food for radiation? i don't trust things coming from the pacific ocean because of fukushima
Answer: Testing food in general is one of the most common questions we receive and also happens to be one of the most difficult ones to answer. In short: - Can food be tested with a hand-held Geiger Counter? Yes. - Will it detect elevated levels of radioactive materials, if present? Yes. - Is it absolutely safe to eat your fish after you scanned it and the result was negative? No, not necessarily. This is not a sensitivity issue, but is simply because radiation emitted from a tiny contaminant will be masked by the natural background radiation that's all around us. Technically speaking, everything is radioactive, even we are. So it would be like looking for a specific water drop in a pond. If the natural background radiation around you is .10 uSv/h and contaminant in the fish emits .02 uSv/h, then geiger counter will naturally continue showing .10, because that's how many radiation particles it is detecting in your immediate vicinity. This means that no matter how sensitive, expensive or calibrated your equipment is, the only way to be absolutely sure that food is safe would be to test it in a lab, where a piece of produce is placed inside a special lead capsule that isolates it completely from any background radiation. There is a lengthy scientific procedure of setting up such tests. Many manufacturers will claim that their detectors will works just as well, but as you can clearly tell, that is a marketing scheme. The only sure way of accurately testing food for radiation is in a lab. Period. Having said that, there are still ways to considerably improve you chances of detecting contamination. Here are some practical tips in getting the most out of your RADEX geiger counter. Whenever anything is measured for radiation, the mass / size of the object being scanned matters. Don't try to detect radiation in a single berry, a mushroom or a cup of water. Unless these are highly contaminated, there would be few particle streams emanating from a smaller volume hence the chances of detection are that much lower. Instead, try scanning an entire basket-full of produce, or a tank of water - the number of particle sources would be that much greater and easier to detect. If it's fish your are measuring, try to have as much of that tuna as possible. Turn the unit on and place it right next to the object (you can use a simple plastic bag to protect the unit - that won't effect sensitivity) for about 40 seconds. Then move a few inches to the side, and so on: continue displacing the detector by the distance of its width every minute or so, moving alongside of the object being scanned. So basically from head to tail. That would give you the highest chances of detection. However, please keep in mind, that even if after scanning it this way, there is still a chance that it may contain radioactive elements that are above the permissible levels for digestion. This is why we NEVER recommend to use Geiger counters for food testing unless in dire situations. We hope this clarifies matter a bit.
Question: what are the minimum sensitivities for beta/gamma? IE: how many KeV in those bands
    Answer: Gamma: 0.1 - 1.25 MeVBeta: 0.25 - 3.5 MeV
Question: Does it use a cylindrical GM or a PANCAKE GM tube
Answer: Cylindrical low voltage SBM20-1 tube. Only does Beta and Gamma. Its does work well. A nuclear plant recently had a leak about 245 miles north of me, and it went bats as I was downwind and it showed elevated radiation at 6 times my normal background for 45 seconds so I know I caught a wisp of it. This is not professional lab equipment, but is good value for what I paid for it. The battery life is awesome too with LSD rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries. I run it 24/7. At this price, I do not really care about tube life.Just do not expect professional grade results from it, but it is good enough and a good value for the money.
