13 best rust treatments
Rust treatments are products used to prevent, remove, or inhibit the formation of rust on various surfaces, particularly in industrial and commercial settings. Rust, also known as iron oxide, forms when iron or steel reacts with oxygen and moisture, causing corrosion. Rust can be a significant problem as it weakens the structural integrity of metal surfaces, potentially leading to costly repairs or replacements. Rust treatments aim to address this issue by offering various solutions to combat rust. Here are some common types of rust treatments:
Rust Converters: Rust converters are chemicals that react with rust, turning it into a more stable compound that can be painted over or coated with a protective layer. They often contain phosphoric acid or tannic acid and are commonly used on rusted steel surfaces.
Rust Inhibitors: Rust inhibitors are coatings or additives designed to prevent the formation of rust. They create a protective barrier that prevents moisture and oxygen from reaching the metal surface. These inhibitors are often used in paints, primers, and coatings.
Rust Removers: Rust removers are products used to dissolve and remove existing rust from metal surfaces. They typically contain acids, such as citric acid or oxalic acid, which break down the rust for easy removal.
Rust Preventatives: Rust preventatives are coatings or compounds applied to metal surfaces to protect them from rusting. They often create a barrier that blocks moisture and oxygen. Common examples include wax-based rust preventatives and corrosion-resistant paints.
Rust Sealants: Rust sealants are similar to rust preventatives but are specifically designed to seal existing rust. They form a protective barrier over the rusted area, preventing further corrosion.
Rust Cleaners: Rust cleaners are used to clean and prepare surfaces before applying rust treatments. They remove dirt, oil, and loose rust, ensuring that the rust treatment adheres properly to the metal.
Industrial Rust Treatments: In industrial and manufacturing settings, specialized rust treatments may be used for heavy-duty applications. These products are designed to withstand harsh conditions and provide long-lasting protection against rust.
It's essential to choose the right rust treatment for your specific application and follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper usage. Proper surface preparation is often crucial for the effectiveness of rust treatments, so thorough cleaning and removal of loose rust are recommended before application.
Rust treatments play a vital role in preserving the integrity and longevity of metal equipment, structures, and machinery in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and transportation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it resist heat ? I want to put it on the exhaust pipe, and muffler to prevent them from rusting |
Answer: | No, sorry. Label says not to apply to surfaces that exceed 200 degrees F. |
Question: | Is it environmentally friendly |
Answer: | I guess it depends on definition of harsh. Even using it outside I was aware of it giving off heavy fumes. I somehow doubt it would be considered environmentally friendly. The upside, however, is that if you follow the instructions and do a careful job, you can be rust free for years. |
Question: | Has anyone used this on a car door with rust running along the seam on the inside bottom |
Answer: | Yes, and the results were not good...BUT, I didn't get the spray to completely cover the rusted area. When there are going to be a couple of days with no rain, I'm going to redo this area. I used it on all the rusted areas of my car, inside and out, and the only area that didn't "get fixed" was the inside seam on the passenger door. Otherwise, it worked great. I also primed and painted all the outside areas but did not on the inside...so after using Permatex, I plan to prime and paint the inside seam and other spots inside as well. I hope this helps. |
Question: | if i used this for the inside of my teapot will my teapot be ok to drink from |
Answer: | That depends, is the teapot short and stout? |

Question: | which works better spray or paint on |
Answer: | I’ve never had issues with the pumps not working. One selection sprays more than the other - maybe try using hot water to see if it cleans something out of the holes?? If you dilute it, it probably won’t work as well. This stuff works great. Spray on, wait & rust stain is gone. |

Don't remove rust, convert rust. Corroseal rust converter is an elite, industrial strength product for all your marine, household, automotive, and industrial rust problems. Extend the life of your metal equipment by protecting it from rust and corrosion. Rust occurs naturally when the iron in steel oxidizes and returns to its original state, iron oxide. Through an innovative chemical conversion process, Corroseal Rust Converter converts rust into a stable substance, magnetite. It also primes the surface with a high quality latex metal primer at the same time. Corroseal truly provides one step corrosion control. Corroseal is the best way to deal with rust because it is less expensive, less time consuming, and is much more than sandblasting. Corroseal eliminates the need to sandblast rust by chemically converting rust from iron oxide to magnetite, a black and inert substance. Corroseal rust converter is your best rust treatment and corrosion control option because it meets all your metal surface preparation needs by converting the rust and priming the metal surface at the same time.
- Paint, prime and convert rust in one step - water based rust converter with latex metal primer
- Restore metal surfaces, extend life of metal equipment by protecting it from rust and corrosion
- Non-flammable and non-corrosive, water-based formula cleans up with just soap and water
- Easy to apply - brush, roll or spray; apply at 8-10 mils wet for 200-250 sq ft per gallon coverage
- Use for all marine, automotive, general household and industrial applications
- Corroseal should not be applied over freshly blasted steel, or new galvanized surfaces
User questions & answers
Question: | Should I wear any protective clothing when handling this stuff |
Answer: | wear gloves with long cuffs & old clothing if you get it on your skin it makes a dark spot that last for 3 daysotherwise it's not a problem it is water washable |
Question: | I have a large storage building roof to coat. Can I use a garden sprayer |
Answer: | As a Ablebody Seaman (Unlimited, Any Waters) and US NAVY VET. I've probably busted more rust than 99.9% of anyone hear. While working on the TW Nelson (Mobile oil's Survey Vessel) we helped develop this stuff. Also aboard Supertankers for several oil Company's we got to try several different Brands of rust converter/reformer.. We brushed it. rolled it. sprayed it ( w/ air gun pick-up) and they all worked better than all previous methods.. and there were a bunch!!! In my opinion Corroseal was the Best of all!! I still buy it in quart & gallon sizes (when required as it goes a long way) DO NOT LET ANY OF THESE FREEZE!!! WATER BASED & WILL TURN INTO A ROCK. Talk about wasted $$$? Don't waste time & money on Rattle Cans as caps k-rap-out way before product does! U want to spray a large area? use air-sprayer w/ large orifice, more thin coats better than 1 thick. let dry. Just Bust off any Scale & Leave the rust. wash down, let dry then get after it! Just give up on acid & paste & all that k-rap. (I took more accidental showers in Ospho than I care to remember, before the new stuff) Wan-kers Away. Old Salty |
Question: | how long before rust comes back if not painted right away |
Answer: | Well, I bought it to touch up my deck chairs. The weather got cold and I have not had a chance to repaint them. I will do so in the spring. So that application is uncertain at present. However, since I had so much... My dishwasher racks had exposed metal where the rubber coating had broken down. I applied this stuff to those exposed areas, probably 2-3 months ago. I have not repainted or otherwise coated those areas. In the meantime, I have used the dishwasher multiple times (with that strong detergent!), and none of the areas I applied this stuff to has 1) lost its black color which was the result of the application, nor 2) begun to rust again. So, the coating seems very durable, even in the face of the adverse conditions in the dishwasher (water, heat, chemicals). YMMV |
Question: | how long before rust comes back if not painted right away |
Answer: | Rust can re-surface within a two weeks if not painted, depending on temperature/humidity. The paint on the roof of my old van had all peeled away allowing rust to form. It was lightly sanded to remove loose rust, wiped clean with damp paper towels, and allowed to dry before applying Corroseal. Van then sat in my garage (in Michigan) for a couple weeks before there was time to paint it, and during that time a fine powdery rust formed over/through the Corroseal in a few areas. It was wiped down again with damp paper towels, allowed to dry for 1/2 hour, then paint was applied, (2-coats exterior latex acrylic enamel). The van has sat in the same spot for 2 months now without any change in the finish. I may have not applied enough Corroseal the first time around as I applied it in two thin coats about an hour apart using a 4"long x 1" diameter foam roller. Cutting-in was best done using a soft, better quality, paint brush. I am confident this rust issue will never return. |
Product features
STEP 1: Prepare the Surface
Follow these four easy steps and breathe new life into your work.
STEP 1: To start, remove large pieces of rust scale so Corroseal has a surface of fine rust to convert. This will avoid chipping later.
STEP 2: Clean the Surface
STEP 2: Scrub clean removing oil and dirt.
Start with a clean surface. Oil and dirt can make it difficult for Corroseal to adhere and react as needed, so cleaning first is crucial. Do not use an oil based cleaner for this step. We highly recommend Corroseal Cleaner for metal surface prep. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning. Then rinse again just to be sure.
STEP 3: Apply Corroseal
STEP 3: Using a brush, roller or spray, apply a thick coat of Corroseal. The thicker, the better. It will be white when first applied, then begin to turn black as it converts rust. Check in 15 minutes, if brown or gray spots peak through, apply another thick coat. A second coat is encouraged to get all rust covered with no seepage. Check again in 15 minutes and reapply as needed.
STEP 4: Paint & Enjoy
STEP 4: Once dry, it is primed and ready for paint. Painting will ensure extra protection from future rust. Enjoy!
Product description
When applied to rusted surfaces, it resists/retards rust in chemical change on drying to a tough, hard surface ready for priming. Paint jobs will last longer after an application of OSPHO because subsequent paint coating securely attaches itself so that moisture and oxygen normally do not attack the metal. Water-thin, covers a larger area than paint and goes on easily. Equally effective for exterior or interior. Available in Case Quantity only.
- A rust-inhibiting coating is not a paint
- You do not have to remove light rust
- Merely remove loose paint and rust scale, dirt, oil, grease and other accumulations with a wire brush
User questions & answers
Question: | If I sprayed this on paint will it affect it? I have rust bubbling through |
Answer: | I do not think this will have positive affects on the paint. It is an acid, and although it did not take the paint off of applications I applied it to, it did affect the paint, some flaked off, and what stayed on turned ash colored. If you plan on putting it on, then sanding and painting over the old paint there is no issues. |
Question: | I bought a house and the previous owner painted the flashing around the hosuse. There is no rust but paint is peeling off, will this work for me |
Answer: | This will not work for you. The reason the paint is peeling is because the flashing is probably galvanized. What you need to do is etch the flashing. You do that by washing it down with vinegar. Let it sit for one day, then wash it off with water, once it is dry it is ready for paint. Rustoleum, used to sell a primer for this, but it was no good. I have not seen it in a while. |
Question: | how many 1 Quart Bottles would I need to cover 80 ft. of Pipe Iron Fencing? Would it be best to buy by the Gallon |
Answer: | You could use a pump sprayer, but a brush also works and there isn't any overspray. A little goes a long ways in my experience. It depends on the square footage of your fence and how bad the rust is, but I wouldn't start with more than 2 quarts. It turns the treated areas white, so you may want to paint it, but it works great. |
Question: | would this work removing rust off atv |
Answer: | As long as the metal is iron based, it should work fine. Not sure how well it would work on aluminum or other base metals. Some atv's are made to be lightweight, so it might be aluminum. Get a magnet an check to see if it sticks to the body. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a rusty iron engine block that im goinng to paint, should i use this product before painting? Note: engine heat is 450F to 600F, thanks |
Answer: | I would take a wire brush to the rusty e block first and then spray with the rust convertor and then paint it the color you want. I like the rust convertor because it goes on clear and you do not see it in color. I even sprayed my new muffler with it too. I hope that you like it as well as I did. |
Question: | I want to use this as under coat but I want the "converted rust" to turn black as suggested. Does this product actually turn the rust black? tnx |
Answer: | yes the rust turns black but if there is no rust it stays clear I think that it is a good product. I think that you will have to cover it up with some thing else though like a spray bedliner might work. |
Question: | What is the estimate of coverage on average utilizing your own experience? Thanks |
Answer: | I generally use this for my vehicles, specifically the under side, where rust begins developing. I would estimate 2 cans would be enough to spray the under side of an entire mid size vehicle. It seems to work very well. |
Question: | How does the VHT Rust Converter compares to the Rustoleum Rust Reformer? Thx |
Answer: | This is an interesting question. I tried both...side by side on the same area on heavily rusted and pitted farm equipment 1/4" steel. There was absolutely no comparison, the VHT worked the Rustoleum did NOT. I like other Rustoleum products but their rust converter just doesn't cut it. VHT rust converter is outstanding. However, I was looking at the one star reviews and was wondering what those folks did differently than what I did? Some claim the VHT doesn't work. Something must be different! The only thing I can imagine is that they used it differently and there are two possibilities here. To start with, my problem was about the worst case scenario I can imagine. Deep, 1/16" rust pits that even a SS wire wheel can't get into. This is where a little common sense goes a long way. After wire brushing the best I could, there was still a substantial amount of rust down in those deep rust pits. So, rather the follow the directions on the can (couple of light coats)...which would never saturate the relatively thick rust in the bottom of those pits, I started with a first heavy coat...heavy enough to saturate the rust in the bottom of those rust pits. All the rust pits turned black while the freshly wire brushed steel surface remained clear. Then, I sanded the surface and applied another light coat of VHT rust converter. Then I covered that with self-etching primer. THAT works great and you are now ready for painting. Excellent bonding and no more rust!Incidentally, I ran a number of tests over a period of several months, exposing the surface at various stages to water and time. The process I just described worked best. Be sure to follow the instructions regarding timing. These self-reacting materials must be applied within minutes to insure the layers bond together well. So, to answer my own question...in some cases the user may not have applied enough on the FIRST coat to saturate the rust. In another scenario, perhaps they didn't follow the instructions on timing. Just my guessing as to what they might have done wrong. |

Question: | how much would it take to cover a entire 1/2 ton truck? would a gallon do 2 coats |
Answer: | I used a spray-gun to do the undercarriage on my Vanagon and I finished with 1/2 gallon left. If you brush it than one gallon is more than enough for your truck. Don't get it on your skin! Took me 2 weeks to get it off. This stuff is awesome. |
Question: | Does the por 15 clear need to have a top coat? If so what would that be |
Answer: | You should use a top coat on any of the POR-15 rust preventative paints. You can use any automotive paint as a top coat. |
Question: | whats the difference between this and the black por 15 ? dose it stop and protect the same |
Answer: | This is a top coat for por15. Por 15 offers very little uv protection so if you paint something that is going to be out in the sun you have to paint over the por 15 with a por 15 top coat. |
Question: | can you paint over this product? which paint is best latex or oil based. i am looking to use this on a rusting dive stand |
Answer: | I have used Por-15 on an extensive restoration of a car. It can be painted over, but you really want to make sure you get your primer on while Por-15 is still slightly tacky. this will allow the primer and then paint to stick better. it is UV sensitive and will change colors if it is exposed to the sun. On my project, I used it primarily under the car or in areas where there will be minimal or no UV exposure. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this safely be used on brake rotors and calipers to prevent rust from forming |
Answer: | I would not, it changes the character of rust and once brakes applied it will be scrubbed off. This in reference to where the pads run, it should help the other areas that the pads don't rub. Once applied you could paint the non rubbing surfaces to reduce rusting there. Hope this helps |
Question: | What kind of tarp or drop cloth would you recommend to protect grass and driveway when using this for a wrought iron gate |
Answer: | Cloth on a plastic dropcloth. Make sure you cover the plants from any kind of spray drift because it will burn the plants |
Question: | Can this be used on Vinyl seats |
Answer: | Why would your vinyl seats be rusting? |
Question: | How long do you let it dry if you want to paint |
Answer: | It will take some time for the chemical change to take place, at least several hours. Once that is done, the metal will have a black and/or white residue on it that you will have to sand or brush off. At this point you may want to spray it again, depending on how well the first spray worked. Once you are happy with how the metal looks, and once you have cleaned it up, then you can apply the paint. My application was on a cast iron handrail that had some rusted areas. |

Question: | Is this safe to use on rust-free bare metal before priming |
Answer: | Some paints are sensitive to acid. Make sure the surface is neutralized and rinsed if you are using acid-sensitive paint. But, be cautious about getting the surface wet before the phosphoric acid is dry. I've read that applying water before the acid is dry can cause a hard to remove white coating. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is rust bullet mbgsp clear liquid metal blast rust treatment and rust remover suitable for removing rust from the cast iron table top of a table saw |
Answer: | Yes it will remove rust from most any metal. We haven't found a metal surface that it doesn't remove rust from. So It will work on your cast iron table top. |
Question: | how is the product used |
Answer: | We put it in a spray bottle and we're using it to remove the rust from my old truck. |
Question: | Can you paint this and will it prevent futher rusting from occurring |
Answer: | Same answer as Bill Feb 12. Also, it does not prevent rust from occurring. |
Question: | does this have to be rinsed or wiped off, or can it be coated over after drying without rinsing/wiping |
Answer: | My experience. Used it this summer on some serious rust on a jeep floor panel. I followed manf. instructions best as I could. Removed as much loose rust as possible.Thoroughly wet it down w/metal blast, waited, and rinsed with water while metal blast was still wet. I let it dry completely before coating with rust bullet. I could see the transformation of the rust layer after metal blast. Seemed to convert the rust to a solid base. I believe this uses phosphoric acid, so likely the reason for thorough rinsing. I would think the rust bullet may not adhere well if any residual acid is left behind. If left to dry, maybe respray a bit and rinse while still wet.Overall, seemed to work pretty good. I used this combo on many rusted areas on the jeep. In some spots aluminum body filler was used followed by paint. So far holding up ok. Will tell better after the salty upstate NY winter. The key is getting to ALL the rust. Good luck. |

Question: | My roof has two very tiny rust spots. Would sanding the rust off, using this product, then using touch-up paint with clear coat be the way to go |
Answer: | When I used this product, I didn't send any rust off. If you can sand the rust off, you might not need this product. This neutralize the rust so the rust won't grow, and you will use paint to seal the spot. |
Question: | Can this be applied to a rust spot on a car fender and then base/clear coated over |
Answer: | yes, it would be excellent for a car fender. It will come out black, but can be painted over easily. It will not fill only coat over rust. |
Product description
The POR-15 3-Step Stop Rust System is designed to stop rust on metal surfaces and ensures the best results when applying POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating. The clear-cut process allows for the proper cleaning, prepping, and coating of metal to create a non-porous surface that seals and protects metal from water, chemicals, and salt, and other corrosive contaminants. The POR-15 Stop Rust Kit covers a 6 square foot area with two coats making it ideal for small projects like sub frames, axle replacements, control arms, brake shields, etc. This kit contains POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser, POR-15 Metal Prep, POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating, paint brushes, latex gloves, and detailed instructions. Basic directions: Gloves, eye protection, and a properly fitted respirator should be worn whenever handling these products. STEP 1. Remove loose rust with a wire brush. Apply POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser to the surface, keep wet 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly with water and allow the surface to dry. For areas with noticeable build up use a stiff brush to break up material and continue to keep wet with POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser. It is important not to allow the product to dry on the surface prior to rinsing with water. POR-15 Cleaner Degreaser is a heavy duty water soluble cleaner that may be used over metal, wood, fiberglass, vinyl and concrete. STEP 2. Apply POR-15 Metal Prep to the bare metal surface, keep wet 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly with water and allow the surface to dry. It is important not to allow POR-15 Metal Prep to dry on the surface prior to rinsing with water. Once dry the surface may show a flash rust or white powdery residue this is perfectly normal. POR-15 Metal Prep provides the best surface profile and greatly improves paint adhesion to any type of metal surface. STEP 3. Apply two thin covering coats of POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating. Apply the first coat to the properly prepared substrate with the supplied brush. Apply the second coat when the first coat is almost dry, slightly tacky to the touch. If POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating is applied too heavy, brush marks may result in the finish. Do not apply this product if the humidity is above 70%. If the humidity is too high POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating will surface dry too quickly which may result in small bubbles in the finish. POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating requires a top coat only if exposed to direct sunlight. For top coating use POR-15 Top Coat or our two part topcoat POR-15 2K Urethane.
