11 best waterproofer for clothes
Waterproofers for clothes are products designed to add a waterproof barrier to various types of fabric, making them resistant to water and moisture. These products are commonly used to protect outdoor clothing, such as jackets, pants, and shoes, as well as other textiles like backpacks, tents, and umbrellas. Waterproofing sprays or wash-in treatments are the most common forms of waterproofer for clothes.
Key features and information about waterproofers for clothes include:
Types of Waterproofers:
- Spray-On Waterproofers: These come in a spray bottle and are applied directly to the fabric's surface. Users can target specific areas or coat the entire garment.
- Wash-In Waterproofers: These are typically added to the washing machine during a laundry cycle. The treatment permeates the fabric, providing comprehensive waterproofing.
Waterproofing Performance: The effectiveness of a waterproofer depends on the product and the type of fabric it's applied to. It creates a hydrophobic barrier that repels water, preventing it from soaking into the fabric.
Compatibility: Waterproofers are designed for various materials, including nylon, polyester, Gore-Tex, and other specialized outdoor fabrics. It's essential to choose a product compatible with the fabric of your clothing or gear.
Breathability: Some waterproofers are formulated to maintain the breathability of breathable fabrics like Gore-Tex. This allows moisture vapor to escape from within the clothing while blocking external moisture.
UV Protection: Some waterproofers also offer UV protection, which can help prevent UV damage to your outdoor gear and clothing.
Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application carefully. Proper application ensures the best waterproofing results.
Maintenance: Waterproofers may need reapplication over time, especially if your clothes or gear see heavy use or frequent washing.
Safety: Ensure that you apply waterproofers in well-ventilated areas and follow safety instructions, such as avoiding inhalation or contact with eyes and skin.
Environmental Considerations: Some waterproofers can contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment. Look for eco-friendly or water-based products if environmental impact is a concern.
Brand and Product Selection: There are various brands and products available in the market, each with its unique features and suitability for different purposes. Reading reviews and consulting with experts can help you make an informed choice.
In summary, waterproofers for clothes are valuable products for maintaining and enhancing the water-resistant properties of your outdoor clothing and gear. Properly waterproofed clothing and gear can keep you dry and comfortable in wet weather conditions, making them essential for outdoor enthusiasts and those who require dependable waterproofing in their daily lives.

Answer: | It will make the flag water proof, but won't protect it from UV damage |
Question: | how is this different from using tx direct |

Question: | I've used nikwax's tx direct for hard and soft shells with no probs. why should i buy the soft shell proof instead |
Answer: | DON'T USE IN DOWN! This is ruin your down jacket! The product will clump the down making the insulation uses. Down jackets aren't water proof by nature anyways. This product use made for outerwear shells. Best DWR on the market is used properly. |

Answer: | I do not have a down coat, but I would not hesitate to use starseal on it if I did! I used this on almost Everything I use outside, from coats to boots to gloves, even my umbrella. It does have a strong oder that will last a few days, but does dissipate, it worked very well on all tight knit cloth and materials, it worked great on my leather boots and gloves for a week or so. Does no do well on lose knitted items, ie: sweaters, it does waterproof the material, but water still runs through the knit. I just ed purchased a new couch, and will be spraying with starseal before I leave for work in the morning. NOTE: APPLY ONLY IN WELL VENTILATED AREAS. |
Question: | Anyone tried this on a Down Jacket |
Answer: | I have only used this on my tent and tent fly. I wash and rinse and spray the product over entire fly. After a few minutes I use damp cloth to smooth out any excess spray. Then I let dry completely before I pack tent to store. So no heat required and when it dries it's good to go. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i got a new patagonia nano puff jacket, can i add more waterproofing with this |
Answer: | No it does not. It states on the label "no PFCs" and "no fluorocarbons", both terms are synonyms for PFAS. |
Question: | Does this contain any pfas compounds |
Answer: | You can actually use a little less than is suggested when you use a front loading washer. It works great in mine with half the recommended amount so I basically get twice as many washes out of a single bottle. |
Question: | Any feedback with use of front loading washing machines |
Answer: | Each bottle is 10 ounces; however, if you read the washing instructions, you may want to order more than one set of Tech Wash and Soft-shell Wash, especially if you own a number of garments. For instance, Tech Wash recommends 5 fluid ounces (half the bottle) be used to machine wash up to 6 garments. Despite this drawback, the Nikwax products have been great; I've been using them for about ten years for washing Gore-tex. The TX Direct is good for bringing back the water repellent finish. |
Question: | Is each product 10 oz? Or are they 10 oz in total |
Answer: | Since my breatheable waders are no longer under warranty, I am going to give it a go as I have everything to gain IF it works. |
