11 best brass cleaner for reloading
Brass cleaner for reloading is a specialized cleaning product used by reloaders and firearm enthusiasts to clean and prepare spent brass casings for reloading ammunition. Reloading involves the process of assembling your ammunition by reusing spent cartridge cases, and cleaning these cases is a crucial step to ensure safe and reliable ammunition. Here are some key points about brass cleaner for reloading:
Purpose: The primary purpose of brass cleaner for reloading is to remove dirt, residue, carbon buildup, and other contaminants from spent brass casings. Cleaning the brass cases ensures that they can be safely reloaded with new primers, powder, and bullets.
Degreasing: Many brass cleaners also serve as degreasers, removing oils and lubricants that may be present on the casings. This is essential to prevent contamination of the reloading components and to ensure proper adhesion of primers and powder.
Types: Brass cleaners for reloading come in various forms, including liquids, gels, and aerosol sprays. Some are designed to be used in ultrasonic cleaning machines, while others are applied manually by soaking or tumbling the brass casings.
Cleaning Methods: Reloaders can choose different methods to clean their brass casings, such as ultrasonic cleaning, rotary tumbling, vibratory tumbling, or manual cleaning. The choice of method often depends on personal preference and the quantity of brass being processed.
Ingredients: Brass cleaners typically contain a combination of solvents, detergents, and corrosion inhibitors. These ingredients work together to break down and remove contaminants while protecting the brass from corrosion.
Safety: When using brass cleaners, it's important to follow safety precautions, including proper ventilation, as some cleaning solutions may release fumes. Additionally, wearing gloves and eye protection is recommended when handling cleaning chemicals.
Drying: After cleaning, it's important to thoroughly dry the brass casings to prevent moisture-related issues during the reloading process. Reloaders may use specialized drying racks or ovens designed for this purpose.
Brass Appearance: In addition to functionality, some reloaders may also be concerned about the appearance of their brass casings. Brass cleaners can help restore the shine and luster of the casings, making them look like new.
Reloading Efficiency: Cleaned and properly prepared brass casings are essential for achieving consistent and accurate ammunition. Reloading efficiency and safety depend on the cleanliness and condition of the brass.
Brand Variety: There are various brands and manufacturers of brass cleaners for reloading, each offering their own formulations and product features. Reloaders often choose products based on their specific needs and preferences.
Overall, brass cleaner for reloading is a vital component in the process of reloading ammunition. It helps ensure the safety, reliability, and accuracy of reloaded cartridges by thoroughly cleaning and degreasing spent brass casings before they are reloaded with new components.

Question: | is this really any different than the gun parts cleaner |
Answer: | Jason The gun parts cleaner is a good B- rating. Benefit is the size and cost compared to comercial products. They are bettery a little pricey and come in 5 gallon pails. heads up never use brass cleaner as a substitute it will destroy finishes. |
Question: | How does this solution clean Glock polymer components (plastic)?? Ant issues with carbon fibre pistol grips |
Answer: | Hi, The solution, when mixed as directed w/ distilled water, does not leave a residue or harm the polymer. I have cleaned both my G19G4 and G21G4 with no problems and it does an excellent job. Know it's serious $ but I feel well worth it. |
Question: | What is different between hornady lock n' load sonic cleaner solution, and hornady one shot sonic clean solution |
Answer: | As previously answered, one is for brass cartridges and the other for gun parts. Why different? The one for brass cartridges will corrode gun parts, and the one for gun parts will leave a thin coat of oil behind, which you don't want on your brass. |
Question: | Water? What about rust |
Answer: | When you have completed the cleaning cycle, dry the parts by hand with a clean towel as completely as possible. You may need to spray some parts with compressed air to displace any small amounts of water that you were unable to dry with a towel. (The compressed air spray that is designed for cleaning computer cases works well). Then you have to be certain to apply oil completely, and a spray can of Rem Oil or Hornady Gun Cleaner and Lube works nicely. I have never had any problem with rust when following this process. Hope this helps. |

Answer: | The bottle instructions indicates that the 16 ounces of concentrate will make over 2 gallons of solution when mixed with water. That ratio should apply to whatever amount of solution a person wants to make up. |
Question: | can this stuff be used in hornadys sonic cleaner seeing as how the container is stainless instead of glass or plastic |
Answer: | No! It contains sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, so it will etch the stainless steel, and dissolve it if left long enough. You may want to use the case cleaner, rinse thoroughly, and then use the Hornady sonic cleaner. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would this work for polishing/finishing plastic parts |
Answer: | It probably can polish plastic parts with the right polishing compound. It is designed to clean gunpowder residue from brass or nickel shell casings. That said, the only control one has is time. How long to obtain the desired outcome. This is done with plug in timers. |
Question: | Is this tumbler effective for stonewashing metals such as stainless steel? Pictures would be helpful if anyone has some! Thanks |
Answer: | No, get a rock tumbler for that. This is for fine polishing media on softer brass. It vibrates. Not sure of the media you need |
Question: | Can this also be used/recommended for polishing stainless steel Pinballs (ball bearings, 1 -1/16Th |
Answer: | It can probably be used for that but it would think it would take a different polishing media for Stainless steel. The walnut shells are for polishing Brass and other soft metals. Not sure what that media would be. A jeweler could probably answer that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with stones |
Answer: | It's metal polish to be added to walnut media. It performs great on brass, but you can experiment and see what it does. My guess is you may be disappointed. |
Question: | Does this work in the Lortane tumbler with copper |
Answer: | Think this is for Brass polishing, you can probably find a copper polisher that would be a better fit. Tumbler's do not matter as much, they all vibrate and tumble. |
Question: | How does this compare to just adding an ounce or so of Nu-Finish orange bottle car polish |
Answer: | Never tried NU-finish heard it works well, the Flitz gives a great shine, but I switched to wet tumbling, expensive up front but cases come out like new inculding primer pocket if deprimed first, car wash and wax + citric acid for wet. I would say the Flitz is worth a try |
Question: | Does this work well on stainless steel |
Answer: | I used this and a soft cloth to clean the carbon deposits of a stainless steel barrel. The carbon deposits and other dirt came off the barell and I didn't see any harm to the barrel from using Flitz. Stainless is a lot harder than brass and copper so it shouldn't damage the stainless, but Flitz does a very good job of cleaning and fine polishing. |

Question: | Can you use this with less brass and get same results |
Answer: | Yes. I polished as few as a hundred. Works great. |
Question: | Does anyone know what ingredient is in this? Can you confirm that there are no acids |
Answer: | If your working with spent brass and using it to clean. That why would you wonder!!! No it’s mixed in water. So much cleaner and better then Dawn dish soap. And it all comes off clean. The best way to clean brass casings so far |
Question: | I've been using 6 oz of the liquid solution for years with great results. Do these pods do the same job for less than a third of the cost per load |
Answer: | I use one pod per load and get good results. Friends can’t believe how clean the brass is. They think it’s brand new. I have never used the liquid. So I cannot compare. Sometimes if it’s really nasty outside range brass. I run it twice with a second pod. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you do not have a built in heater - how do you reheat used solution for further use. Solution that has been used once |
Answer: | The Lyman Turbo Sonic heater I have has a heater. More importantly, I never reuse cleaner. After a 3 or 4 baskets of bras are cleaned the solution is definitely ready to be thrown out. I would not save solution even after cleaning one basket of brass. |
Question: | Once a solution is mixed, about how many times can it be reused, if any |
Answer: | I have used the brass cleaning solution 4 times with good results. I believe it depends on how much dirt accumulates in the solution. It can be filtered to remove large pieces of debris. |
Question: | Which solution would be best for cleaning copper |
Answer: | Sonic cleaner removes light tarnish, heavy grit and deep darkened brass is best in tumbler . I use both the sonic takes less time on once fired brass. It's a learning curve, trail by error.. |
Question: | How hot should this solution have to be to effectively clean brass |
Answer: | Not very. My man cleaner gets hot but not boiling hot. I start cleaning brass as the cleaner is warming up and seems to work pretty well. Hot tap water is hot enough. |
Product description
Brass Shine powder detergent is specifically formulated to clean brass cartridges and other brass parts with minimal foaming in a rotary or magnetic tumbler using stainless steel tumbling pins. Brass Shine is biodegradable, minimally foaming, highly concentrated, and works with hard, soft, or purified water. Each 1 pound package creates up to 25 gallons of cleaning solution.
Directions:Using the included scoop, reference the suggested dosages below for guidelines on how much detergent is needed to thoroughly clean your brass. Do not overload your tumbler as your brass will require additional cleaning cycles and premature motor failure may occur. Check brass every 15 minutes to determine if additional cleaning is necessary. After cleaning is complete, rinse brass by hand, or run a clean water rinse cycle. Suggested starting dosages (you will fine tune this depending on your set up):
- For 1 quart (1 liter) drum, use 1/2 quart (1/2 L) of water and 1 teaspoon for lightly soiled brass or 2 teaspoons for heavily soiled brass
- For 1 gallon (4 liter) drum, use 2-3 quarts (2-3 L) of water and 1 tablespoon for lightly soiled brass or 2 tablespoons for heavily soiled brass
- Per 1 gallon (4 liters) of water, use 1 tsp + 1 tbsp for lightly soiled brass or 2 tsp + 2 tbsp for heavily soiled brass Depending on the condition of your brass, local water quality, and drum load, more or less detergent may be needed. Experiment with different dosages to determine the optimal amount of detergent for your needs. CAUTION: Keep out of reach of children. May be harmful if ingested or inhaled. If skin contact occurs, rinse areas thoroughly with clean water. MSDS available upon request.
- Biodegradable
- Highly Concentrated
- Minimal Foaming
- Creates 25 gallons of cleaning solution
- Included Measuring Scoop
User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work in a sonic clearer |
Answer: | I have used this in my sonic and wet tumbler they both worked well, YouTube has other methods that I may try. For now I am happy with the results from both with the sonic being less destructive to the cases. |
Question: | Does this work with nickel casings |
Answer: | Yes, brass shine is compatible with nickel plated brass cases. However, when cleaning nickel plated cases with our stainless steel tumbling media, the pins clean by burnishing the surface, which means that it's cleaning using abrasion. This will cause the nickel plating to eventually wear off the brass. Short tumbling cycles should be fine, but with any abrasive cleaning process, the cases will not have that polished, mirror-like reflective look to them anymore. But your cases will still be completely clean when using Brass Shine detergent. |
