12 best craftsman framing nailers
Craftsman framing nailers are power tools designed for fastening large framing nails or collated fasteners into wooden structures, typically used in construction and carpentry projects. These tools are known for their durability and reliability, making them a popular choice among professionals and DIY enthusiasts. Here are some key features and information about Craftsman framing nailers:
Framing Nails: Craftsman framing nailers are compatible with various types of framing nails, including common nails and galvanized nails. The choice of nail depends on the specific application and the type of wood being used.
Collated Fasteners: These nailers often work with collated fasteners, which are nails or staples that are connected together in a strip or coil. Collated fasteners are loaded into a magazine or chamber in the nailer for efficient and continuous operation.
Nail Size and Angle: Craftsman framing nailers come in different models, each designed for a specific nail size and angle. The most common nail size for framing is typically 3.5 inches, but these nailers can often accommodate a range of nail sizes, including shorter brad nails for more delicate work.
Depth Adjustment: Many Craftsman framing nailers feature depth adjustment settings, allowing users to control how deep the nails are driven into the wood. This is important for achieving the desired level of penetration without damaging the material.
Trigger Mechanism: These nailers have a trigger mechanism that controls when the nail is fired. There are typically two modes: sequential firing, where the trigger must be released and pulled again for each nail, and bump firing, where nails are fired rapidly as long as the trigger is held down.
Anti-Dry Fire Mechanism: To prevent damage to the tool and improve safety, Craftsman framing nailers often come equipped with an anti-dry fire mechanism. This feature prevents the nailer from firing when it is out of nails or fasteners.
Magazine Capacity: The magazine capacity varies from model to model, but it generally holds a substantial number of nails or collated fasteners, allowing for efficient and uninterrupted work.
Power Source: Craftsman framing nailers are typically pneumatic, electric, or cordless. Pneumatic nailers rely on compressed air from a separate compressor, while electric and cordless models have built-in power sources, such as batteries or electricity.
Portability: Cordless Craftsman framing nailers offer greater portability and flexibility, as they don't require an external air compressor or power source. This can be advantageous in remote or outdoor construction sites.
Durability and Build Quality: Craftsman is known for producing robust and durable power tools, and their framing nailers are no exception. They are designed to withstand the rigors of construction work.
Safety Features: These nailers often include safety features like a no-mar tip to prevent surface damage, a trigger lockout to prevent accidental firing, and a comfortable grip for reduced hand fatigue.
Craftsman framing nailers are valuable tools for framing, sheathing, and other structural woodworking tasks. When choosing a model, consider factors such as nail size, power source, and features that best suit your specific needs and projects. Proper maintenance and safety precautions are essential when using framing nailers to ensure safe and efficient operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | will it take any brand of nails |
Answer: | I have used two different brands so far. As long as the nails are plastic coated, 21 degree I believe any brand would work. The best prices I have found on nails is at harbor freight. 2500 nails for around $28. I have used 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" |
Question: | How come just below the nailer specs they say "often bought with this product"....22 degree nails....not |
Answer: | I used some of the 22 degree without a problem. I've used Bostich guns for 30 years prior to this gun & this is as good as any I've used.t's a great nailer |
Question: | do the nails have to be plastic coated |
Answer: | Plastic coated? No. But I do believe they have to be Plastic Collated, that is, they need to be bound together with plastic. I'm not sure if paper collated nails will work. |
Question: | What kind of air compressor do you recommend for this nailer |
Answer: | It really depends on how you're using it. If you're intermittently nailing with in and not imitating a machine gun- you can use a pancake or similar small compressor. The working pressure of the nailer is 70-115 PSI. I run mine at 100 PSI. Any portable compressor should be able to hit that pressure. The real question is duty cycle. If you're nailing every few seconds then you'll need a compressor capable of keeping up with the volume of air being consumed OR you'll have to slow down until your compressor stops running before firing the next nail. I run mine on 2 different compressors and don't have any issues- one is a 40 gallon shop compressor- the CFM is infinite compared to the gun. The other compressor is 2.6 CFM. I don't rapid fire when I'm using it and I can fire several nails before the compressor has to cycle. As long as you're not continuing to fire when the compressor is running you should be OK. |

Numax 21º Full Head Framing Nailer
It's time to tackle a new project - and we have just the tool to get it done. The SFR2190 is perfect for framing, but did you know you can also use a framing nailer to install sub-floors, roof decking, wood fencing, sheathing, and more? We designed this nailer with you in mind, so it has all of the premium features you need to get started.
Step 1: Choose Firing Mode
Your framing nailer comes with a black single-fire trigger already assembled. This is the best choice if you haven't used a framing nailer before, or if you want accurate nail placement.
Follow the manual instructions to install the red bump-fire trigger if you want quick successive firing.
Step 2: Connect to Compressor
Set your compressor to 70 PSI and use the quick-connect fitting on your air hose to connect your framing nailer. If you have a really dense material, you can increase the pressure up to 115 PSI.
Put a few drops of oil into the fitting before connecting to a compressor to keep things running smoothly!
Step 3: Load Nails
Pull the side lever back along the magazine until it snaps into place.
Drop the nails into the open channel on the top of the magazine. The angle of the nails should match the angle of the nose of the nailer.
Lift the lever at the back of the magazine to release the side lever and secure the nails.
Step 4: Adjust and Go!
This nailer is loaded with features that let you customize for any project. Change the depth adjust, 360º air exhaust, or remove the no-mar tip for extra holding power.
Pro Tip: Use piece of scrap material to test out your nailer before starting on the real thing!
21º Plastic Collated Full-Head Framing Nails
A 'plastic collated nail' just means that the nails are held together with a thin strip of plastic. They are great for DIY projects because there are no issues with glue or sharp pieces of metal flying around when you're working. We suggest you use 21º nails for the best performance, but the SFR2190 can use any nail from 20º - 22º. The magazine fits nails from 2" to 3-1/2" long and is compatible with any generic brand, which is perfect if you have nails left over from other projects! If you don't have any leftover nails, we've listed some fasteners here that have worked for our customers in the past.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long for pressure to build up on initial start up? Thanks |
Answer: | If it's not holding pressure check all connections you may have a loose one. |
Question: | If i buy this for my husband, do i need to buy an air hose, and if so, what do i buy? this is all stuff i know nothing about. thank you |
Answer: | Air hose and some attachments come with. In the future you may want to get a kit with air gun, tire inflater and changeable fittings. |
Question: | Can this be used for roofing |
Answer: | It works perfectly to run one roofing gun. I’ve bought two of them and they both could handle the work load perfectly. And to comment on one of these guys replies to your question, He said the compressor would run continuously and burn up” well that’s not only untrue but impossible. You would have to be able to lay 5 square an hour all day long not just an hour or two for it to even be remotely possible to burn up that compressor. Not saying you couldn’t lay 5 square an hour but you can’t do it for several hours straight that’s for sure. I personally have put on 11 bundles per hour for the first 2 hours and the compressor did not run continuously and even if it did it wouldn’t have burnt up. Those specific compressors are designed to click off and on as many times as you can make them do so. |
Question: | Can a framing nailer be used on this compressor or just finishing |
Answer: | Yes, I run my Hitachi framing nailer off this. Maybe 30-40 .141 x3" nails into dimensional lumber before the compressor kicks on. Could I use a more powerful compressor for framing? Sure. But the weight and cost of this thing are very nice. Would be underpowered for roofing or sheathing applications, though. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long may I use it every day |
Answer: | No, it would probably collapse |
Question: | What are the dimensions lxwxh of the actual compressor? (not the "package |
Answer: | Outside diameter of the hose is .590” |
Question: | Is it loud when filling the tank |
Answer: | According to the specs, it should be good for 300 psi. The one I have is only 3 ft long from one compressor tank to another tank. I have used it at 120 psi with no problems. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Quick disconnect are great when you need them, but every connection is another restriction to getting air where you want it, so use as few as possible. The exception are double-female connectors, which are full ID. If in doubt put your mouth over the end of a connector and try blowing through it. I think you'll be shocked at how fast those restrictions add up, and how much long hoses hurt flow-rate. To screw the both ends of the hose in would only require ONE end to turn, which a swivel connection will do, and so will a HV Milton Type-V quick connect. Always use Milton HV Type-V connectors to get 74 instead of 40 CFPM flow. Many mfgs now support this standard. With a female air-chuck on one end, and a HV male quick connect on the other, plugged into a HV female quick connector on the tank/compressor, this will allow a small 3-10 gallon tank/compressor to fill tires at an amazing rate. This collection of air powered nail guns and a stapler covers your framing to finishing needs and includes a 21 degree 3-1/2" Full Round Head Framing Nailer (PFR2190), 15-Gauge 34 Degree Angle 2-1/2" Finish Nailer (PFN1564), 18-Gauge 1-1/4" Brad Nailer (PBR32), and 18-Gauge 1-1/4" Narrow Crown Stapler (PST9032). The powerful framing nailer is specifically designed for tasks such as framing, sheathing, truss assembly, roof decking, subfloors, fencing, furniture, and assembling pallets and shipping crates. This durable nail gun features a one piece drive blade made of hardened steel and a lightweight magnesium body. Put the finish nailer to work on door and window casing, moulding, trim, chair rails, cabinetry, and other fine finish applications. The 34 degree angle of the magazine makes it easy to access corners or tight spaces, and the dual mode trigger allows to easily switch between sequential or bump firing. When the focus is on accuracy, use the sequential mode. When speed is the name of the game, engage the bump fire option and get to work. The brad nailer is ideal for interior and exterior finish and trim, furniture, cabinetry, picture frame assembly, and hobbies and crafts. An oil-free design eliminates the need for regular maintenance and prevents stains on your work surface. The narrow crown stapler is perfect for projects such as decorative trim, cabinetry, cabinet backing, and hobbies and crafts. The no mar safety tip prevents damage to your work surface, ensuring professional results. A canvas carrying bag, air tool oil, and adjustment tools are included. The Pneumatic Framing and Finishing Nailers and Stapler Combo Kit with Canvas Bag (4-Piece) will allow you to complete a wide variety of home improvement and repair projects quickly and easily.

User questions & answers
Question: | Any suggestions on a pancake compressor for these guns |
Answer: | Mines not a pancake compressor, but it is around the same size. I have a 2.6 gallon 2 HP compressor that works beautifully with these guns. It fills to 120 psi, and I have a regulator on the compressor that allows 80-90 psi through, depending on the gun I am using at the time. I can usually shoot 20-30 nails before it has to get more pressure built up, but never dropping below 90 psi. Since the tank is so small, it takes only seconds to fill again. I'm not sure what the rules are on linking to other items, but I bought the compressor off Amazon. |
Question: | should you use a water separator or oiler with nail guns |
Answer: | The only specification with the Freeman nail guns is to provide oil to the system. So I have only been oiling since water is not a problem in the air system I'm using. Some of the air supply systems I have used previously needed a water separator. If you are not sure about the amount of water in your system a water separator might be a very good addition. |
Question: | Has anyone had trouble with these nail guns working right |
Answer: | I have been using my framing gun 3 days out of the week as I continue to remodel my house. I have used the 15 gauge and 18 gauge guns just as much without any problems. I don't know if it's related to the setup and continuos maintenance but I have a filter on the compressor and use the air tool oil. I never exceed 120 psi on my framing gun and I adjust to 75 to 90 for the other guns. I continue to have good service from these tools. |
Question: | what kind of nails does it use |
Answer: | I use Hitachi fasteners. GEt mine at Lowe's. Used the Stapler and Angle Finish Nailer today. Built our 16'x16' deck with the Framing nailer. Great set of tools.
