12 best hanger bolts
Hanger bolts are specialized fasteners that serve a unique purpose in various industrial and construction applications. They are threaded at both ends, combining a bolt-like threading on one end and a wood screw-like threading on the other. This dual-thread design makes hanger bolts versatile and suitable for a range of tasks. Here are some key points about hanger bolts:
Dual Purpose: Hanger bolts are primarily used for securing objects to wooden or metal surfaces. They are commonly used in furniture assembly, hanging fixtures, and construction projects where a sturdy connection is required.
Materials: Hanger bolts can be made from various materials, including steel, stainless steel, and brass, depending on the specific application requirements. The choice of material depends on factors such as strength, corrosion resistance, and aesthetics.
Thread Types: The two ends of a hanger bolt have different thread types:
- The threaded end resembles a standard bolt and is used to secure the hanger bolt into a pre-drilled hole.
- The wood screw-like end is designed to be driven into wood or other softer materials, creating a secure anchor point.
Applications: Common applications of hanger bolts include:
- Attaching table legs to tabletops or wooden bases.
- Hanging kitchen cabinets or wall-mounted shelves.
- Mounting light fixtures, curtain rods, and towel bars.
- Connecting wooden parts in carpentry and woodworking projects.
Installation: To install a hanger bolt, you typically:
- Drill a hole in the receiving surface for the threaded end.
- Screw the threaded end into the hole using a wrench or socket.
- Attach the object to be secured to the wood screw end using a regular nut or washer.
Sizes and Lengths: Hanger bolts come in various sizes, thread pitches, and lengths to accommodate different project requirements. It's essential to select the appropriate size and length for your specific application.
Versatility: Hanger bolts are versatile fasteners that provide a strong and reliable connection between two materials with different characteristics, such as metal and wood. They are widely used in both residential and industrial settings.
In summary, hanger bolts are threaded fasteners with dual threading, making them suitable for connecting objects to wood or metal surfaces. They find applications in furniture assembly, construction, and various other projects where a secure and durable connection is needed.

Question: | How are these self-tapping? I don't think they are. I don't see the cut-out for them to be self-tapping |
Answer: | Self tapping might be a bit overstated. I drilled a 1/4" pilot and used a 3/8" Threaded Rod Coupler with a short 3/8 bolt in one end. This gave me a "driver" that I could screw on the machine threaded end to screw it into the material with a socket and ratchet, or a drill. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is this bolt end to end |
Answer: | they call this 3 inches. I am no longer where it is installed, but am confident is was 3 inches. I would say the threaded (machine end) is 1 and 1/4 inch. |
Question: | Is the thread n 5-40 unc or 5/16-18 unc |
Answer: | 5/16” standard course thread. A 3/8” nut will fit the bolt |
Question: | How is a hanger bolt installed |
Answer: | 1. Drill an appropriate diameter pilot hole in the wooden component . at least as deep as the wood screw threaded part of the hanger bolt. 2. Lube the wood screw threads with a little (solid) parafin. 3. Screw two 5/16 - 18 hex nuts onto the machine threaded end of the hanger bolt. Hanger bolt threads should pass completely through both nuts plus about two threads to the outer nut. 4. Jam the two nuts together with two wrenches. 5. Use one wrench on the outer nut to screw it into the wood as far as desired. A ratcheting socket wrench will work best, a box-end wrench is second choice, an open end wrench is third choice. Channel locks or a pipe wrench will also work but might bugger the flats of the nut. 6. Using the two wrenches, un-jam the two nuts, remove them, and you're ready to go. |
Question: | How do you screw these into the wall |
Answer: | If you have more than one or two, I'd recommend you get a hanger bolt driver (under $6). It screws onto the end and can be put into a drill chuck or turned with a wrench. Then once you have the wood screw end installed into your pilot hole, you reverse the drill and the driver unscrews from the machine screw end. Be sure the hanger bolt driver has the same specs (5/16 - 18) as the hanger bolt. |

User questions & answers
Question: | This title and some details says size: m10*1.5, but other info says 3/8". which is it because they are not the same. wanting to make sure before |
Answer: | Mine showed up in a box marked 3/8. They are NOT M10. |
Question: | Are these true m10 size or are they |
Answer: | These are NOT M10. The box i received is labeled 3/8, and I even went as far as taking a set of sizing bolts (similar to what you would use at a hardware store to size nuts and bolts) and both the M10 and the 3/8 will 'fit', but the 3/8 sizing bolt it just a little loose. These fit the same way. If i wasn't under a time crunch, I would return. And won't be buying from this particular company again. |
Question: | How does one drive these hanger bolts into wood? Is there a special bit for this |
Answer: | Just drill a small hole with a regular drill bit. Place a drop of dish soap in the hole to aid in installing. In the center of the hanger bolt is a flat section. Use a pliers to grip and install. |
Question: | Can’t find a M10 hanger bolt driver for these. 3/8” hanger bolt driver doesn’t work. Suggestions |
Answer: | I got 2 m10 nuts. I used wrenches to lock them together on the threads. I used the outer nut to screw in the anchor. I used the wrenches to loosen and remove the nuts |
