14 best drywall anchors
Drywall anchors are essential fasteners used in construction and home improvement projects to securely attach objects to drywall walls or ceilings. They are especially useful for mounting items when there is no underlying wall stud or when you want to avoid damaging the drywall. Here's what you need to know about drywall anchors:
Purpose: Drywall anchors are designed to distribute the weight of objects, such as shelves, pictures, mirrors, and light fixtures, across a larger area of the drywall, preventing them from pulling out or falling.
Types: There are several types of drywall anchors available, including:
Expansion Anchors: These anchors expand behind the drywall as a screw is inserted, creating a secure hold.
Toggle Bolts: Toggle anchors consist of a spring-loaded wing or toggle that opens up behind the drywall when a screw is tightened, providing strong support.
Molly Bolts: Molly anchors have a threaded bolt with a conical end and a sleeve that expands when tightened, creating a snug fit against the backside of the drywall.
Plastic Ribbed Anchors: These are plastic anchors with ribs that grip the drywall as the screw is driven in. They are suitable for lighter loads.
Weight Capacity: The weight capacity of a drywall anchor depends on its type and size. It's essential to choose the right anchor for the weight of the object you intend to hang. Manufacturers typically provide weight ratings for their anchors.
Installation: The installation process generally involves drilling a hole in the drywall, inserting the anchor, and then driving a screw into the anchor. For toggle bolts and Molly bolts, you may need to use a screwdriver to set the anchor before inserting the screw.
Applications: Drywall anchors are used in a wide range of applications, from mounting TVs and cabinets to hanging artwork and curtain rods. They are versatile and can be used in both residential and commercial settings.
Tools: Basic tools required for installing drywall anchors include a drill, screwdriver, and a level. For larger projects, a stud finder may also be helpful in locating nearby wall studs.
Precautions: When installing drywall anchors, it's important to be cautious not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the drywall. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the specific anchor you are using.
Removal: Drywall anchors can typically be removed by unscrewing the attached screw. After removal, the hole can be patched with spackling compound or a patch kit, especially if you plan to install something else in the same location.
Safety: Always follow safety precautions when working with drywall anchors. Wear appropriate safety gear, and be mindful of electrical wiring and plumbing behind the walls.
In summary, drywall anchors are crucial fasteners for securely attaching objects to drywall surfaces. They come in various types and sizes, each suited to different applications and weight capacities. Proper installation and selecting the right type of anchor are key to ensuring a safe and secure attachment to drywall.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these safe to use to install furniture tipping straps into drywall |
Answer: | No ,The plastic strips right off when you try to screw them in, and the tips snap off very easily. |
Question: | Are the plastic anchors durable |
Answer: | I drilled a tad bit smaller than the anchor, for a more secure fit. |
Question: | when drilling the first hole for the plastic, how big should the hole be? same size as the plastic or a little smaller |
Answer: | While they don't tell you what size to use, I just go by trial and error. The drill size should be smaller than the anchor, so start small and increase in drill size till you can almost push it all the way in then tap it in with a hammer for a tight fit. |
Question: | How do I know what size drill bit to use |
Answer: | No. The 100 screws with packaging weighs 0.37lbs. |
- The ribs on the plastic anchors prevent the anchor from turning in the hole during installation
- Hollow-door anchor provides a firm hold from within hollow-core doors and thin panels
- For light to medium support in Drywall & Masonry. Comes in a handy Plastic organizer case with size compartments for easy storage

User questions & answers
Question: | How Big Is It |
Answer: | I don't know why it would. These are meant to embed themselves into drywall or sheet rock. In most homes this is 3/4" - 1/2". On the other hand, a hollow door is, well, hollow. Maybe 1/4" except for the framing and maybe decorative panel extrusions. The best solution for a towel hook would probably be one of those "stick-on" varieties. The only downside to those is that they are not very attractive. But the right one would certainly be sturdy |
Question: | Will these work for a hollow door to hang a towel hook |
Answer: | This was in the description. Pan Head Phillips Sheet Metal Screws: #6 x 3/4 inch, 6 Pieces. #6 x 1 inch, 22 Pieces. #8 x 1 inch, 4 Pieces. #10 x 1-1/4" inch, 15 Pieces.They were the correct for what I needed to repair. I was remounting a towel bar. |
Question: | What size screws are in this |
Answer: | The heavier the item you’re trying to hang. The bigger ones will work |
Question: | This set comes with lots of different kinds of anchors. What's the difference? When would I use which one |
Answer: | The wire diameter of the hook is about 0.16inch, so the drill bit of the drill around 0.16inch is ok. |
- Starts easier than other self-drilling drywall anchors
- Deep thread design provides strong engagement in 3/8", 1/2" or 5/8" gypsum wallboard
- Pre-drills precise hole in gypsum wall board - No hole preparation required
- Constructed from durable plastic to last for years. Can be easily removed
- Kit Includes 20 Plastic Anchors, 20 #8 x 1-1/4'' Phillips Screws and a Plastic Case, Hangs up to 50 lbs
User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit a 1/4"-20 X 1-1/4" screw? I can not find something to match this size. Thank you |
Answer: | If you are drilling directly into a stud you do not need to use the plug. The plug is for walls that will not support the weight of a shelf or heavy object with just a screw and need the plug to hold the screw in place. You need to use a drill bit to make the hole and screw the plug in if there is no stud to support the screw alone. Then the screw can go through the bracket into the plug. |
Question: | can these drill through a stud |
Answer: | They are designed for and come with number 8 wood screws. The 6 drywall may be loose but would go in. Depends on your project. |
Question: | Will these hold with a number 6 drywall screw |
Answer: | Just run them in using a phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill/driver with phillips insert bit. A pilot hole makes starting them easier, and be careful to avoid studs. Be careful when running the supplied phillips screw into the anchor, they're a bit too big and can tear the plastic anchor loose from the drywall. |
Question: | how to install self drilling drywall anchors |
Answer: | I'm afraid they cannot be used in metal studs. These anchors come with strong ribs that help them to stay in a stable place on the drywalls. They can easily penetrate into thick or thin drywall and doors. Large anchor maximum bear weight: 50lbs and mini anchor maximum bear weight: 35lbs. |
User questions & answers
Question: | Is the end of the anchor suppose to open up like a mouth after you drill into it? Because its not happening for me |
Answer: | These are fantastic for anything that is 50lbs. or less. Predrill a small hole with a straight drill bit. Predrilling the hole makes it so very easy. Next screw in the plastic anchor. Work on 1 side at a time - but be sure you use a level to hang it straight. Next place the curtain rod...then the metal screw. You can be sure that when you open your curtains there is a lot of strength holding them up. |
Question: | I just want to hang curtains without the screw pulling out of the wall. Will this work with the ordinary curtain rod bracket |
Answer: | 50lbs each. So you are good to 100lbs. Great anchors! |
Question: | I want to hang a 6 ft dry erase board that has two mounting brackets that weighs about 30-50lbs. What is this items weight rating |
Answer: | If you have studs, but they are not where you want to hang the TV, do this: Use a 1 x 4 and mount that to the available studs.then, use regular screws to mount the TV to the 1 x 4. So, for instance, if you have a stud every 16 inches, you would use a 36" piece of 1 x 4, and mount that to three studs, each stud being 16" center to center. Then, mount the TV to the 1 x 4. |
Question: | Any chance i could use these for a tv wall mount? no studs available |
Answer: | Made of cheap plastic ! The screw in dry wall anchors kept breaking as I was putting them in the wall. |

Question: | Hd suggested these for bar in shower to grab onto. Going through tile grout and wire mesh. Thinking 3 on each end so 6 total. Will that be strong |
Answer: | Yes ... great!! |
Question: | Will they work on the thin vinyl planels of mobile home walls |
Answer: | I don’t know definitively but the bolts are very sturdy |
Question: | How much weight can each one hold |
Answer: | Each on is different. Back the screw our to it is just in the hinge. Then you can strighten toggle out alignen with the screw. This is the smallest it can get. Measure the toggle at the hinge. Remembet it is squar and it has to fit in a round hole so make it a little bigger. |
Question: | How big do the holes have to be to insert the folded toggles |
Answer: | There's a lever inside of the handle against the blade to hold it in place. If you can push it to the left with your thumb, you will be able to close it easily |
- The split in the ribbed anchors expand on two opposing sides as you tighten the screw, increased holding power

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this kit work on concrete walls |
Answer: | I’m holding my TV up on 2 of them. It holds but I’m a little worried I might find a broken TV when I get home. I’m planning on replacing them with a toggle style. Toggle wall mounts can hold a crazy amount of weight. |
Question: | How much weight can they hold? I have a big mirror so I’m curious |
Answer: | I have used only for drywall. Worked well. |
Question: | can these be used for wood, eg stripped screw holes on doors |
Answer: | It’s made in Chynah |
Question: | Where is it made? Country of origin |
Answer: | 304 stainless steel screws are mildly magnetic. "All stainless steel is magnetic except austenitic stainless steel which is actually 300 series stainless such as 304 and 316. However, 300 series stainless is non-magnetic only after it is freshly formed. 304 is almost for sure to become magnetic after cold work such as pressing, blasting, cutting, etc." answer from Google |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could these be used as anchors to hang light\medium weight things in wood paneling? The plastic kind dont work |
Answer: | I do not understand the purpose of the screw being flush with the wall. How could it possibly be flush while also hanging something on it??? Even a simple wire from a picture frame/painting would need the screw to be slightly out in order to hang it. Good luck with what you are doing! |
Question: | The screws are longer than the anchor. So how does that work? Does the screw just stick out? I want to have the screw flush with the wall |
Answer: | Yes, these are very easy to use (even for a DIY Woman). The one watch out is these anchors are made from Zinc, so they are fairly fragile. I would not recommend if drilling into walls in an older home that are plaster or older Sheetrock as they will break. |
Question: | Is this easy to use by a diy ignorant woman? I have pictures I want to hang on drywall |
Answer: | 25pcs Zinc anchors,25pcs Screw,total 50 pcs, |
Question: | Does this come in 100 pieces or 50 pieces, web page says both (see 2nd picture on front page |
Answer: | Not really nails, but screws...but be careful you don't let one slip behind the darn wall! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use these in metal studs |
Answer: | Large anchor maximum bear weight: 50lbs and mini anchor maximum bear weight: 35lbs. |
Question: | whats the maximum weight it can carry, please |
Answer: | Will depend on drywall strength, thickness and how well you put the anchor in so I don't know if there is a rated type of number. Would also depend on the load you hang on it and if it strictly a shear force or some sort of pullout type of loading. Most of these seem to take 20-30# of hanging weight in a shear type of loading if the item doesn't have a lot of dynamic (moving) type of loads on it like a grab bar or something similar. |
Question: | What is the weight limit for each size |
Answer: | Mine are holding up shelves 5-10 pounds and still holding fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these long enough to go through typical old house plaster and lath |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Are these stainless steel screws |
Answer: | These things are awesome! All that you need is a phillips head screw driver. 1) Mark a spot that has no stud behind it. 2) Unscrew the supplied screw from anchor. 3) With phillips head, screw the zinc anchor into the wall, until flush. It's self-drilling. 4) If needed, place the bracket you are mounting and start screwing in the supplied anchor screw. You'll feel it push in, but just keep turning and the internal anchor will eventually tighten and seat. 15lbs should be no problem. Way better than those plastic sleeve anchors. |
Question: | How do you install them exactly? Would they be too much for a 15 lb wall decor |
Answer: | This is a specialized drywall anchor that drills its own hole, threads into the drywall plus is a toggle bolt. All you need is a Phillips screw driver. These really hold on well. Far better than any other type of drywall anchor. Screwing directly into a stud is still the best but these anchors really work well and will carry the weight they are rated for and then some. |
Question: | Don't screw into a stud?? In the past I've always drilled a hole in the stud for the anchor. Can someone explain why this is different |
Answer: | I saw another review of these anchors that said they can't be removed, but are designed to be pushed through sheetrock so that they drop into the wall cavity if they are no longer needed. |
