| Answer: | I have been comparing them to decide which one I want, this one (hoover Power Scrub) has automatic mixing of the detergent solution and the water, so you can choose a water only (rinse) or water with cleaning solution. The SteamVac, you must mix the solution in the water tank, so in order to rinse you would have to completely empty out the clean tank and then add just water. The power scrub only turns off the scrub brushes when the handle is in the upright and locked position. The scrub brushes on the SteamVac can be adjusted for gentle, normal, and off. They both use heated air on the dry (suction) strokes to help with drying. It looks like the SteamVac might be a little cheaper but then it doesn't come with all the attachments the power Scrub does. In fact it is a little vague on which attachments come with it. I checked the owners manual for both of these for this information. The Power Scrub is about 2 pounds lighter than the SteamVac. The assembly of the SteamVac seems a lot more involved. I think I am about sold on the Hoover Power Scrb Deluxe carpet cleaner. |

It won't pick up liquid while the flap is open though, so I spray and scrub with it open, then seal the flap to extract liquid. I'm not sure if that is the purpose of the flap, but it works. |

| Answer: | If you think of shampooing your carpet like shampooing your hair, it makes sense to rinse. Adding shampoo to you hair and then stepping out of the shower might make your hair clean, but it's not going to be soft. Long ago (LONG ago) when I shampoo'd carpets as part of my job, we were taught to think of it as hair: (a) Lay down a bit of water first; (b) apply shampoo; (c) rinse it out. If the carpeted area was heavy traffic, do just like the shampoo bottle says -- apply a second bit of shampoo, work it in, and then rinse it out. Over the years I've ALWAYS done that when cleaning my own 2500 sq feet of WHITE carpet in my house, and it always comes out fluffy, soft, and white. Even with several black dogs. |

| Answer: | This was my first scrubber for carpets. I broke my ankle soon after I got it, so I only got to use it 3 times. I thought it did a good job on open areas. I did not like how it did close to the edges of the carpet where it meets the wall. I used it on steps and it did fine. One thing I remember is hold the dirty water container tightly when you go to empty it or the dirty water can spill out all over your work that you've done. Once you have figured out how to assemble and take apart, it is fairly easy then. I liked the fact that it gets the water up fairly well. For the money, I am happy with it, I have two cats. Must mention it takes some strength to work on steps and edges, as I used a large toothbrush. But the latter doesn't have anything to do with the animals, I was just giving you my opin of the machine. |

| Answer: | I have a cat so hair is a major problem for me. The Smartwash does pick up the hair and it can get stuck in the nozzle going to the dirty water tank. The brushes will stop. But it is fairly easy to clean both the nozzle and brushes. It is easy to disconnect the pieces to clean. This machine does a good job of cleaning. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. I do recommend that you follow the rinse instructions after using the cleaner. It rinses the carpet to remove the cleaning solution from the rug. All you do is remove the bottle with the cleaner solution and go over the carpet again with just clean water. |

| Answer: | If the carpet has the standard ~1/2 foam padding underneath I would guess your ok. The cleaner doesn't soak the carpets that much since it dries very quickly. Also, if you have a good poly or varnish seal on the wood floors below that would be a plus too. I'd do a two x two foot square test in a corner where you can pull up the carpet and padding if you already have the machine and see what happens. Old oxidized bare wood floors under area rugs without padding may be a problem. The type of Hoover cleaning fluid you use should make no difference though. (Pet vs. Free clear, etc..) |

| Answer: | Hello B-rent: I am assuming you are referring to the replaceable filter. I've used the same filter since 2007 and have logged approximately 900 miles. The filter is accumulating some silt, but it still works. It's much slower in my gravity filter but if I use it in a pump filter it's fine. I would imagine the 0.2 micron fibers in the filter would last a very long time if unused. The only thing that I would worry about would the o-ring. I don't know how long this will last but again it must be more than 8 yrs if not used. I follow the manufacture's recc's on post hike use: flushing about a liter or so of bleach and water, then leave out to dry completely, then store. So, if it is new and unused, I would imagine shelf life would be greater than 8 years, probably more. (especially if stored out of sunlight). Never store your filter wet. In addition never allow water to freeze in your water filter. that will likely destroy/damage the fibers. Some fibers are made of glass fibers (like the more recent models of the Katadyn filter, so if left on the shelf, they should last indefinitely. Hope this is helpful |
