Answer:	I've done just that while maintaining a firm hold on the pour tab. May I also suggest that you pour in the dry instant milk first, followed by the water. The opening is also wide enough to facilitate a spoon for stirring halfway through the process. I personally find the stirring elevates lumps and better dissolves the powder. JMHO

Answer:	I have had no problems with adjusting mine, yours may have a defect. When it gets to the length I need, I simply twist it as tight as possible, and untwist when done to have it properly fit into the dustpan and handle for storage.
