Answer:	This toaster is indeed usually set up to toast two slices -- obviously, 1 in each side. I would assume, though, that if all you wanted to do was toast 1 slice, then .. put 1 slice in, and guess at the toasting level you want before pushing down the bar. I hope this helps.

If you check the feedback here you will see this is not a "one off" problem. While some may work, if you get a bad one you are screwed and their customer service is truly the worst of misnomers.

The original KitchenAid product is slightly deeper -- about 5-1/2 in. -- so it fit just a little bit better, but this one works. Answer:	The slots are 1.5" X 5.75". This is exactly why I bought this toaster. Every other toaster I've measured in stores have slots that are only 5.5" long and that's not long enough for the rye and whole grain bread that I buy. In my old toaster I would have to cut the toast in half and toast each half separately. This is the ONLY toaster I've found that my bread fits into without having to cut it or stuff it in. Love this toaster!
