Both are removable as is the entire basket holder. It's sometimes difficult to get theses 'star' plates out. The slits in the top plate are very narrow. I don't think this particular model has an 'earlier' version. It's relatively new - hard to find 8½ inch pans at this point.

The interior is about 12” W x 11” D and about 4.75” of usable height with the pan installed.

Answer:	17.5 inchesit does sit very high on the stove, I am 5' 8" and could stir and look into the pot, but I used slow increases in heat and a lot of stirring, I would use caution if removing the lid with steam that close to face and eyes

Answer:	Yes, the walls and the base are the same thickness (thin). Ive used this pot for two home brews with a turkey fryer and the bottom is burned on the inside. Its nice and big though for cheap. If you are using an electric burner you will be OK though. If you are using gas, spend the extra money on something with a double bottom.
