Amazon or its vendors get a similar deal as brick-and-mortar retailers on these cards, but they have lower costs than brick-and-mortar stores. So they can afford to sell these cards at a lower price than face value, and it ends up being lower price than the online codes.The economic incentives are all wrong here, and sadly until Microsoft and other vendors properly take this into account, there will continue to be wasteful distribution of physical cards when selling an electronic code is better for everyone.
