The metal doesn't go all the way to the edges, it stops about 1/3 inch before the edge, providing great flexibility at the edges but enough firmness such that it can do useful work.

Answer:	No, the handles are made of TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) and have a lower melting point than the silicone blades. You should be careful about resting them on the edge of a hot frying pan since than can melt or mark easier than silicone.
