10 best ceramic knife sharpening
Ceramic knife sharpening is a method of maintaining and restoring the sharpness of ceramic knives. Ceramic knives are known for their exceptional sharpness and durability, but like any knife, they can become dull over time with regular use. Here's what you need to know about ceramic knife sharpening:
Use a Ceramic Honing Rod: Unlike traditional steel knives, ceramic knives should be sharpened using a ceramic honing rod rather than a traditional sharpening steel. The ceramic rod is specifically designed to sharpen the harder ceramic blades effectively.
Honing vs. Sharpening: Honing and sharpening are two different processes. Honing is used to realign the blade's edge and restore its sharpness without removing much material. Sharpening, on the other hand, involves removing material to create a new edge. For ceramic knives, honing is usually sufficient for regular maintenance.
Angle and Technique: When honing a ceramic knife, it's essential to maintain the correct angle. Many ceramic honing rods have guides or marks to help you maintain the proper angle. The angle typically ranges from 15 to 20 degrees. Gently slide the knife blade along the ceramic rod, alternating sides, to realign the edge.
Frequency of Honing: How often you need to hone your ceramic knife depends on your usage. Some people hone their knives before each use, while others do it less frequently. Regular honing helps keep the knife sharp for longer.
Professional Sharpening: While honing can maintain a ceramic knife's edge, eventually, it may require professional sharpening. Professional sharpening services or electric sharpeners specifically designed for ceramic knives can be used to restore the blade's sharpness when honing is no longer effective.
Avoid Using Traditional Knife Sharpeners: Traditional knife sharpeners with abrasive materials, such as sharpening stones or pull-through sharpeners, are not suitable for ceramic knives. These materials are too abrasive for ceramic blades and can cause damage.
Caring for Ceramic Knives: To prolong the sharpness of ceramic knives, it's essential to handle them with care. Avoid cutting on hard surfaces like glass or granite, as this can cause chipping. Use a soft cutting board, such as wood or plastic. Also, refrain from twisting or prying with the knife, as this can lead to damage.
Storage: Store ceramic knives properly to prevent them from coming into contact with other hard objects or knives. Consider using knife guards or a knife block with slots designed for ceramic knives.
In summary, ceramic knife sharpening involves using a ceramic honing rod to maintain the sharpness of ceramic knives. Honing should be done regularly to realign the blade's edge. Avoid using traditional sharpening methods designed for steel knives, and be mindful of proper knife care and storage to maximize the lifespan of your ceramic knives.

User questions & answers
Question: | Diameter of the rod |
Answer: | It can only be used for steel knives!!! For ceramic knives you need a diamond sharpening stick, as diamonds are the only substance harder than industrial ceramic! |
Question: | is 6" total length or just the ceramic section |
Answer: | they don't give info on a # grit. Guessing, I'd say coarser than 400. It is by far the best rod type sharpener I've ever had. |
Question: | Can this be used for ceramic knives or just for normal steel/metal knives |
Answer: | It's closer to 3-1/2. |
Question: | what is the grit of the rod |
Answer: | If your pad is attached to the original shur-line applicator handle, then it should not be "glued to the black plastic". We have replaced our pads several times and kept the original handle. If it appears "glued" it is just a guess that some paint, varnish, or other substance used to apply has seeped in between there and dried = that would tend to make it sort of glued together. We used ours on a paint and on a sealer combo deck stain product from a big box store. If stuck we used water and or an applicable to completely UN-stick and wash before putting it away. If you did not separate and clean when putting it away on last use then that may be the problem. |

For most home chefs the sharpening steel will realign the edge and remove any niche or burr. An oval rod provides more surface contact with the edge to achieve same results as traditional rod but with fewer strokes.
This honing steel serves a vital role in the kitchen by realigning, or "resetting," a knife's edge, which bends this way and that when contacting a cutting surface. (Often called a sharpening steel, or "butcher" steel, a steel doesn't actually sharpen a knife--unless it's a "diamond" steel.) Consisting of a rod of hard steel-alloy and a tough synthetic handle, this steel works well. A loop facilitates hanging it close at hand so you can employ the steel oftenideally each time you use a knife. That prevents a blade from becoming dull and prolongs intervals between professional sharpenings. The rule is that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, and this steel's 10-inch rod is sufficient for nearly all household knives. The steel carries a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a smaller pocket knife (Benchmade)? I read that their 4 in 1 doesn't have enough clearance to get the blade fully sharpened |
Answer: | Here at the dimensions 17.3 x 16.2 x 8.6 inches for the item Panasonic PT-VX400NTU. |
Question: | will it sharpen like 28- 25 inch swords |
Answer: | No, but there's nothing to know. If these glasses work with your tv, and I know for a fact that they work with 2011 3D Panasonic models (maybe also 2010) they charge extremely quickly via the micro usb cord and they hold a charge forever. Great glasses with zero weight around the eyes and ears. |
Question: | Does anyone know what the sharpening angle between the rods is? I couldn't find the info on their site |
Answer: | Very sorry but I wouldn’t know... |
Question: | Is this product made in the USA |
Answer: | I have the pt-7000u.....and they work with it... |
Question: | Does it matter in regards to flavor if the material is not stainless steel |
Answer: | When purchasing 3D glasses you need to check your TV manual as to whether it accepts Bluetooth Glasses or Infrared (IR). Then match the glasses accordingly. I already learned this lesson. This Panansonic model is IR. |
Question: | Is the burr, steel as it states, or stainless steel? Don't like rust in my coffee |
Answer: | I bought this remote several years ago but I do not remember having to program it. I will say it works great after 4 year. I even accidentally dropped it in water. I lost it and bought an off brand. This one is so much better. I was happy when I found this one and just use the other as a spare. I would contact the seller for assistance or replacement. Check your model number to be sure it is compatible. |
Question: | Where is this made? The 565.04 seems to be made in China, Is the 565.05 made in Switzerland? Or are the burrs for both made in Switzerland |
Answer: | Yes, if you order from Awesome remote controls then send me a message after paying I'll refund half the shipping. |
Question: | How much are replacement burrs |
Answer: | No. It’s a special hardened cutting steel designed to be harder than the blade you’re sharpening. |

"Wusthof 10 Ceramic Steel"
While most sharpening rods are only useful for realigning knife edges, those made of diamond dust or ceramic--as this rod is made of--actually do sharpen dull knives. An additional benefit to this sharpeners ceramic shaft is that it never wears down as diamond coating eventually does. Simply hold the steel out in front of you and, with light pressure, draw the blade across the ceramic shaft from heel to tip at a 20-degree angle. Your blade should quickly be restored to its original sharpness. The sharpening steel offers medium to fine abrasion on knives and has a wide bolster to protect hands during the sharpening process. A polymer handle offers a comfortable grip and has a hole for hanging. The 10-inch length is sufficient for tackling all sizes of kitchen knives, from parers to slicers. --Cristina Vaamonde

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this last longer than a diamond steel of equivalent grit |
Answer: | Solid ceramic as far as I know. Although I need to clean it regularly with a green scouring pads. |
Question: | How to clean to remove traces of metal that get trapped in the ceramic sharpener |
Answer: | According to Wusthof, they make two Ceramic Sharpeners, each with a different grit; obviously one is a bit more coarse than the other. And like the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales for temperature, there are two corresponding scales of measurement systems for measuring grit. This ceramic sharpener (model 4455) comes in the blue color, and is the more coarse of the two; it is rated at J800 (which is the same as F360). The white one, model 4456, is the finer ceramic sharpener; it is rated at J3000 (which corresponds to F1000). Even the white, finer grit, ceramic is more aggressive than the common honing Steel (they are usually called sharpening steels, but that is a misnomer) - so go easy with the white one and real easy with the blue one. If you don't know what you're doing, read up first! I believe I'd go with the white one unless you really know about sharpening knives, or your cheap knife is really dull (and even then, I'd then consider the diamond "encrusted" steel, which is a sharpener rather than a honing steel, and more aggressive than either of these ceramic sharpeners). |
Question: | Hi! Does this sharpening/honing ceramic have a metal core, or is it ceramic-coated? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes, i am the left hand user. and it is easy to use for me. |
Question: | What is the grit rating |
Answer: | It is easy to use, sharpening knives with only one direction. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the radius of the sharpening area |
Answer: | 1 centimeter or .3937 inch |
Question: | What's the grit |
Answer: | I use diamond steels & ceramic steels for different things. Ceramics are more fragile. My opinion I would say diamond steel will last longer. |
Question: | What is the diameter of this rod |
Answer: | Most of the time a little soap and water with a brush will clean the ceramic sharpener just fine. But every once in a while I have had to resort to a cleansing powder and brush to remove the metal. I have used this same sharpener for years and it sure puts an edge on my knives. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the grit rating |
Answer: | It is one honing rod per box. That’s all you should ever need since they can last a lifetime (unless you drop or damage it). |
Question: | How many rods come in the box |
Answer: | No it's way to wide to fit between the serrates |
Question: | Can you use this on serrated knives like steak knives |
Answer: | The fine grit is rated approximately 1200-1500. |
Question: | Oh, I see it is just one ceramic sharpening rod. What grit or grain quality is this for? 1200, 3000, or what |
Answer: | The best way to bend it would be to use a metal bender. Harbor Freight has a variety for cheap. I think for 3/8" diameter, you can use the bender that costs like $12 |

Ceramic Honing Rod
The ceramic honing rod incorporates a fine side for honing sharpened knives to a razor-sharp finish, and a coarse side to quickly touch up knives between sharpening delivering a fresh cutting edge before each meal in only a minute or two.
What is MicroForge?
MicroForge is a process of forging microscopic facets along the cutting edge of a knife. As a knife begins to dull from use, the recessed micro facets along the blade remain sharp by avoiding contact with the cutting surface. A MicroForge edge retains its cutting ability longer, extending the intervals between sharpening.
How do I apply MicroForge?
MicroForge is applied by pushing a sharpened knife through the MicroForge port located on the handle of the ceramic honing rod. A MicroForge knife is maintained the same way as a conventional edge by honing with the ceramic rod. Honing maintains the dulled edge of the blade while the recessed micro facets remain sharp. Removing MicroForge from a blade is as simple as resharpening your knife with any Work Sharp Culinary knife sharpener.
When should I use MicroForge?
MicroForge can be applied to any knife. Unlike serrations, a MicroForge knife is versatile enough to use for any culinary cutting task. MicroForge outperforms conventional edges when slicing veggies, fruits, and freshly baked, thick crust breads. Straight-edged steak knives with MicroForge will slice through prepared proteins without tearing the meat.
Better Knife Control - Precision - Safety
A MicroForge edge provides greater cutting control. As the micro facets cut the outer skin of foods, the straight cutting edge guides the knife through the soft inner. Using a MicroForge edge requires less pressure to slice through your ingredients, giving you more control over each cut. A MicroForge knife will not slip away from you when slicing through tough skins and crusts, and provides a clean cut through the softest fruits and vegetables.
