2 best bamboo steamer for wok

A bamboo steamer for a wok is a traditional Chinese cooking tool used to steam food. It consists of two or more stackable bamboo baskets with a lid and is designed to fit inside a wok or a similarly sized pot. Here's what you should know about a bamboo steamer for a wok:

  1. Construction: Bamboo steamers are typically made from natural bamboo strips woven together to form a basket-like structure. The bamboo is untreated and doesn't impart any unwanted flavors to the food being steamed.

  2. Stackable Design: Bamboo steamers come in sets of two or more baskets, allowing you to steam multiple dishes simultaneously. The stackable design saves time and energy.

  3. Lid: The steamer is equipped with a domed lid that fits snugly over the top basket. The lid helps to trap steam and evenly distribute heat during cooking.

  4. Ventilation: Bamboo steamers have small gaps or openings between the bamboo strips, which allow steam to circulate inside, ensuring even cooking.

  5. Versatile Cooking: Bamboo steamers are versatile and can be used to cook a wide range of foods, including dumplings, buns, vegetables, seafood, and even desserts like steamed cakes. They are a popular choice for cooking dim sum dishes.

  6. Health Benefits: Steaming is a healthy cooking method as it preserves the nutrients, flavors, and textures of the food without the need for excessive fats or oils. Bamboo steamers are a popular choice for health-conscious cooks.

  7. Ease of Use: Using a bamboo steamer is straightforward.Simply place it in a wok or a pot filled with simmering water, arrange the food on the bamboo trays, cover with the lid, and let the steam do the cooking.

  8. Maintenance: Bamboo steamers are relatively easy to clean. You should rinse them with hot water after use and allow them to air dry. Avoid using soap, as it can absorb into the bamboo and affect the flavor of future dishes.

  9. Durability: With proper care, bamboo steamers can last for a long time. However, over time, the bamboo may become discolored or show signs of wear and tear. This is normal and doesn't affect their functionality.

  10. Size Options: Bamboo steamers come in various sizes, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your cooking needs and the size of your wok or pot.

Bamboo steamers are not only practical cooking tools but also add an element of authenticity to your Asian-inspired cooking. They are widely used in Chinese, Thai, and other Asian cuisines to create delicious and healthy steamed dishes. Whether you're a novice or an experienced cook, a bamboo steamer can be a valuable addition to your kitchen for preparing a wide range of delectable steamed dishes.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 12 inch pot, rim to rim. Without the ring, can i just place the 12 inch steamer on top of the pot
Answer: I don't know what you mean by "the ring", because the set comes with the steamer basket and a lid. There's no "ring". However, my experience has been that placing them on a similar pot becomes precarious. Better to use a wok with water.
Question: No one ever tells you which size goes with a 14 inch wok. Will someone explain
Answer: A 12" steamer works best with a 13-14" wok. Soak the steamer's bottom basket in water so it won't burn & place inside the wok. I use a 14" wok with a 12" steamer. That way any drips go right back inside the wok. Hope this helps!
Question: How high an item can I place inside the basket (i.e. distance between the bottom of the inside to the closed lid
Answer: Maximum height from top of first layer bamboo to bottom of second layer bamboo is 2 1/2 inches. That is also the measurement from second layer to lid crown.
Question: Do you put this in a large pt with water, or what? TIA
Answer: I've been using Bamboo Steamers for almost 25 years! A large Wok works best. You DO NOT NEED TO SOAK IT nor DO YOU NEED A RING TO PLACE IT ON! Simply use water to just below the steamer and proceed to cook or warm up the food. If cooking for an extended time keep a watch on the water level as you do not want the pan to go dry.

Helen's Asian Kitchen Bamboo Steamers

Steaming food helps retain fresh textures and flavors, and preserves precious nutrients. Steamers are made from 100-percent natural bamboo, a fast-growing alternative to traditional materials for a more sustainable living.

How steamers work:

A bamboo steamer is designed to sit over another pot containing boiling water. As the water boils, the steam enters the steamer through the open slats in the bottom and is contained in the steamer by the lid. The bamboo steamer absorbs any condensation, keeping water from dripping back onto the food. When heated, it forms a hot container and, with the cover in place, can keep food warm for up to half an hour. The bamboo steamer is also an attractive serving piece and may be brought right to the table. Foods that are steamed require little or no added oils or fats, and they retain vitamins and minerals and cook quickly and evenly.

Tips for steaming the Asian way:

When steaming dry foods such as breads and dim sum, line the bottom of the steamer tier with parchment paper or cabbage leaves to prevent sticking. 9.5" parchment rounds do the job easily. However, for foods that are seasoned such as seafood, meats and tofu, steam them in a heat-proof shallow dish (such as a Pyrex pie plate) to catch the flavorful and nutritious juices. The dish should be about 1 inch smaller than the diameter of the steamer and the food should not touch the inside of the lid to allow steam to circulate freely around the food for even cooking. The added benefit of using a dish is that the bamboo steamer stays clean. Use specially designed Plate Retriever Tongs for added safety.

Caring for Your Bamboo Steamer:

Before using for the first time, rinse the bamboo steamer and lid with cold water. After each use, wash steamer with hot water and a brush, if necessary. Do not use soaps or detergents — bamboo may absorb fragrance and impart unwanted flavors to foods. Allow steamer to thoroughly air dry before storing in a well-ventilated place.
