Answer:	No they do not grip the plate like if some type of adhesive tape where it's secure in place, but the material is thick enough, sturdy enough where the placemats hold firm on the tabletop, an keeps the plate from sliding about, my dining table is a faux marble top I'm quite pleased with my purchase of this item

Answer:	I would think YES. I have mine on a maple table and they slide into place easily. We (at 78 and 79) have not had any spills and love them as they clean easily.

Answer:	I don't remember. But they are sturdy, well made and look nice on the table. They also have a matching runner that I bought too.

Answer:	The red is very deep red - almost burgundy, More earth tones with brown and browny orange. Dark not bright.
