13 best leather wax

Leather wax is a specialized type of wax used for treating and conditioning leather goods. While it may not be directly related to candles, candles holders, or home decor, it plays a significant role in the maintenance of leather items found in these contexts. Here's what you need to know about leather wax:

  1. Purpose: Leather wax is primarily used to condition, protect, and waterproof leather. It helps to maintain the suppleness, shine, and longevity of leather products.

  2. Application: To apply leather wax, you typically rub it onto the surface of the leather using a soft cloth or sponge. The wax is absorbed by the leather, nourishing it and creating a protective layer.

  3. Conditioning: Leather wax contains oils and waxes that penetrate the leather fibers, preventing them from drying out and becoming brittle. This conditioning action keeps the leather soft and prevents cracking.

  4. Waterproofing: Leather wax also has waterproofing properties, making it an excellent choice for leather goods that may be exposed to moisture. It creates a barrier that helps repel water, preventing stains and damage.

  5. Shine: Leather wax can enhance the natural shine of leather, giving it a polished and lustrous appearance.

  6. Versatility: Leather wax can be used on various leather items, including shoes, boots, belts, wallets, bags, and even leather furniture. It is especially useful for items that are subjected to wear and tear or exposure to the elements.

  7. Types: Leather waxes come in different formulations, including solid wax bars, paste waxes, and liquid waxes. The choice of wax type depends on personal preference and the specific needs of the leather item.

  8. Color Options: Some leather waxes are available in different colors to match the shade of the leather, ensuring that the treatment doesn't alter the item's appearance.

  9. Frequency: How often you should apply leather wax depends on the level of use and exposure of the leather item. Typically, it's recommended to wax leather goods a few times a year or as needed.

  10. Storage: Store leather wax in a cool, dry place to prevent it from melting or deteriorating. Keep it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

In summary, leather wax is a valuable product for maintaining and protecting leather goods, including those used in home decor and personal accessories. Regularly applying leather wax can extend the life of leather items and keep them looking their best while also adding a layer of waterproofing for added durability.

The Only Natural Industrial Strength Leather Protection

Heavy Duty LP provides a natural barrier against destructive substances and reinforces leather fibers against scuffing. Due to the Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula, a little goes a long way. It waterproofs naturally, while still allowing the leather to breathe. With regular application, people are getting years of wear out of their leather boots!

Leather Care, Conditioning, and Reproofing

Not just for boots, Obenauf’s leather preservative (lp), is widely used to condition leather saddle bags, chaps, tack, holsters, sheathes, baseball gloves, as well as motorcycle and auto leather. More than a leather conditioner, use Heavy Duty LP as a wax waterproofing. Apply with a low heat blow dryer to reproof your cotton oilskin dusters and hats. The natural ingredients of LP can also be applied to protect unfinished, natural wood furniture.

Originally Developed for Firefighters 30 Years Ago

An Idaho Wildland Firefighter developed this unique Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula to protect leather against caustic fire retardant chemicals, ash, heat, water, and abrasion. Natural oils are gradually released into the fibers as a long-term lubrication. Heat or continued flexing causes oils to be released faster. Leather gets oiled when and where it needs it most; while on the job!

Recommended Application

At room temperature, apply by hand as body temperature helps melt LP into leather. Two applications last longer in wet conditions. For absorption, allow ten minutes or up to one hour between treatments. On smooth leather, buff off excess with a clean cloth. On nubuck, use a soft bristled brush. One ounce should provide one application to a pair of tall boots. Apply every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a leather couch following the use of the leather oil
Answer: I think it would be based on how dirty your boots are! You don't need a brush for this product, but, as I've said before, I didn't find this product to be a "magic bullet" for leather care.
Question: Anyone use this tin for a whole couch
Answer: I honestly don't know why not. I bought it for use on cobra skin boots and it worked perfectly.
Question: I have a pair chapped cognac and a pair acorn brown. Will this restore without darkening much or is there a different product i should use
Answer: I would say yes, as the kit comes with a protectant, most likely silicone. It is a small spray can however, so I would just buy a large can of silicone spray for your purposes. Protection is the most important part of boot care after all. The other products seem to work well also.
Question: will it work for lambskin
Answer: Yes, I have a handmade pair of ostrich leather boots from Lucchese. They actually recommended these product to me.exotic leather: caiman, elephant, hippo, lizard, ostrich clean / Brush off dirt or dust with a damp cloth or soft brush. condition / Apply an exotic leather conditioner to your boots in several thin layers. polish / Apply a neutral or matching cream based polish, buff with a soft cloth. protect / Apply a non-silicone water and stain protector.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the difference between this and the polishing oil
Answer: Any acrylic finish will harden whatever softener you apply . So not sure what exactly the effect your going for or what kind of feel to touch you desire when finished . If your looking to just soften then finish i would go with fiebings softener / antique finish stay away from the acrylic. There's plenty of things you can do for a nice shine .
Question: Does this have any waterproofing effect
Answer: No a crack is almost like a cut the fibers are separte. Picture it like a sponge with a rip in it .You can add stuff to make it plump up but it would not mend fibers.
Question: Can i use this on my red wing hawthorne style 8113 suede in place of their mink oil
Answer: This is a wax based finish. It is not meant for suede. Use Fiebing's Water Protector aerosol.
Question: Can I use this to protect my untreated veg tanned leather
Answer: It will darken it slightly, but noticeably. May also add a slight sheen. It shouldn't impact the natural process though, and will protect from water damage. I don't know of any options for protection that won't alter color slightly.

Otter Wax

Based on 447 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Our all-purpose Beeswax and Lanolin waterproofing treatment is the best way to waterproof your leather. This heavy-duty sealing wax goes on thick and provides a long-lasting protective seal. (Exceptionally good at sealing seams on hiking boots!) Why do we use Beeswax and Lanolin? Beeswax is one of nature’s most useful products. It is a hydrating ingredient that increases moisture retention of leather, and hydrated leather naturally repels water and stains. Lanolin comes from the wool of sheep and in the same way that it protects sheep from the harsh effects of the environment, it helps protect leather by sealing in moisture while repelling water and stains. Otter Wax Boot Wax features Long-Lasting Protection, Easy Application, All-Natural Ingredients (No Silicone, No Petroleum), Non-Toxic Formula (Apply Anywhere, Anytime : No Obnoxious Odors or Dangerous Chemicals), Versatility (Use on Leather Shoes, Hats, Jackets, Bags, Outdoor Furniture, Auto Interiors, & Much More).

  • Heavy-Duty Leather Protectant : Beeswax & Lanolin Waterproofer
  • 100% Natural, Environmentally Friendly & Safe Ingredients
  • Non-Toxic, No Silicone, No Petroleum, No Dyes, No Chemicals
  • Great for Leather Boots, Shoes, Hats, Bags, & much more.
  • Safe to use on all colors of leather.

User questions & answers

Question: does this good for nubuck
Answer: This is thick & on the waxy side, not oily
Question: Can this be used on Nubuck
Answer: W/shoes — yes
Question: i have bright leather shoes(desert colour). will it darken it
Answer: Absolutely! Our product is designed to mimic the effects of mink oil, but using only cruelty-free ingredients. The key to mink oil is the high content of oleic acid. We use ingredients that have a higher concentration of oleic acid, but are naturally-based.
Question: Would this work on suede boots
Answer: Absolutely, but expect some darkening to occur (but this will fade to a lighter color as the leather de-hydrates). The patina that you'll get over time will be fantastic, and our Salve will help keep your leather hydrated and supple with regular application. Don't forget, leather is just skin but without the body to continually rehydrate, so keeping it hydrated once or twice a year will help to ensure that your item can last for many years to come.

Question: Would this be better on boots than "Nikwax spray-on Fabric & Leather
Answer: No.
Question: Does this work on suede leather
Answer: It can be used on any top grain leather. Nubuck is top grain leather that been sanded. So yes it could, but it might affect the look of the leather. I'd try it on the heel before I'd do the entire shoe. Put it on, wait a day and then use a brush to get the nap back. If it looks good do the entire shoe.
Question: Can I use this on Chippewa Leather Boots? They are Oiled Leather
Answer: I used this product on a light leather purse and it darken it slightly. My daughter didn't notice the difference.
Question: Is this product safe on gore-tex footwear
Answer: Yes it does. Using this is how you make “waxed suede”. It looks way different after use, but it’s totally safe and makes suede much more durable.

Cleans Your Footwear

Your waterproof footwear could be soaking up water just because it is dirty! Through use, the outer surface of footwear will pick up contaminants, such as dirt, which attract water. This masks the effect of any Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, leading to footwear 'wetting out' in wet or damp conditions.

Cleaning waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt, but also revitalize DWR, causing water to bead on the outer surface once more.

Waterproofs Your Footwear

Alternative waterproofing products leave behind a surface coating that can inhibit or reduce breathability, leading to wet feet from condensation. Many waterproofing products areaerosols or use fluorocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable, and fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer. Nikwax products are a completely non-flammable, safe product that you can apply to wet or dry leather, providing instant Durable Water Repellency (DWR) while maintaining breathability. Nikwax products can waterproof footwear made of fabric, leather, suede, or nubuck!

Eliminates Odor From Your Footwear

All sandals and foot beds have one thing in common; over time, contact with your bare feet will lead to a build up of dirt and body oils. This then leads to bacterial growth and smelly footwear!

Nikwax Sandal Wash is a highly effective cleaner and deodorizer which has been specifically designed and optimized to clean and deodorize all non waterproof footwear, including shoes, sandals and next to skin areas of footwear, such as insoles and footbeds.

Aids the Breathability of Your Footwear

Breathable waterproof footwear is most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric or leather absorbs water, the breathability of the footwear will be reduced leaving your feet clammy and wet. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your footwear must be maintained to ensure comfort. Through use, the outer surface of footwear will pick up contaminants, such as dirt, which attract water, masking the effect of any DWR coating. Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel will remove contaminants and revitalize DWR.

User questions & answers

Question: I plan on using this to condition and repair tiny hair thin cracks on my genuine leather couches. Does this have a scent
Answer: I prefer the cream. Seems to last longer then the spray, it’s obviously more time consuming to apply. I use the cream Initially then maintain with the spray.
Question: Will this help break in my new leather jacket that’s really stiff
Answer: I would not use it on suede as it will turn suede darker, I used product on my leather hunting boots(non-suede) and it darkened them up. I do not think the product is for suede leather
Question: Will this work on synthetic leather
Answer: I used them on my Chippewa boots from L.L. Bean. They are also oiled leather and this stuff applied nicely and waterproofed nicely as well. It did make the leather a decent amount darker, so keep that in mind if it would bother you. I thought it made them look better.
Question: Will this work on rabbit skin hides/pelts? They're very stiff and I'm working on breaking them, and would like to condition the pelts after softening
Answer: I love all Nikwax products - I do not believe this wax would hurt your Gore-tex and if this was my only option I would use it. However Nikwax makes a spray on product specifically for Gore-tex http://www.amazon.com/Nikwax-300mL-Fabric-Leather-Spray/dp/B005GJC4V8/ref=pd_sim_sg_39?ie=UTF8&refRID=0PFCKP4JPPY0FNSXG6E8

User questions & answers

Question: Is it supposed to be very runny like water? Opened the container and a bunch spilled on the floor
Answer: Mine never did, but the first jar I received seemed 'old' and smelled 'off' so I returned that one and exchanged for another. The second one was fine and worked exceptionally well, but I suppose if you live in a very warm climate, it could liquify. Mine was a soft paste and worked well. Looked just like the picture on the website. Also, it could be the result of how and how long it was stored by Amazon's fulfillment center and how it was transported to your residence if you live in a very warm climate (as we did when we were in Phoenix, AZ - always had to be careful of when we ordered certain items.)
Question: Can I use this on my leather teddy
Answer: Real leather loves our Beeswax! Whether a favorite bear or garment, your teddy will be softer and smoother with just one application.
Question: Bought a very exspensive pair of dark exoctic python leather boots for my son and want to protect & condition would you recom this or another product
Answer: I love this stuff. I have used it on my leather couch and on a vintage Chanel purse. It works better than anything else I previously tried. I would definitely try it on leather boots.
Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: Animal oils and beeswax
