13 best woodburning stoves
Woodburning stoves are heating appliances that use wood as a fuel source to generate heat for homes. They are popular for their rustic charm and efficient heating capabilities. Here's some information about woodburning stoves:
Function and Operation:
Fuel Source: Woodburning stoves are designed to burn wood logs, pellets, or sometimes other biomass materials. They rely on the combustion of these materials to produce heat.
Heat Output: Woodburning stoves can produce a significant amount of heat, making them effective for heating rooms and even entire houses, depending on their size and design.
Chimney Venting: These stoves require a chimney or venting system to expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke and gases. Proper chimney maintenance is crucial to ensure efficient and safe operation.
Types of Woodburning Stoves:
Traditional Stoves: These stoves have a classic appearance, often made of cast iron or steel. They typically have a door with a glass window, allowing you to enjoy the view of the flames.
Contemporary Stoves: Modern woodburning stoves come in sleek designs and may incorporate advanced features for better combustion efficiency and heat distribution.
Catalytic vs. Non-Catalytic: Some stoves use a catalytic converter to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Others rely on a non-catalytic combustion process.
Efficiency and Environmental Impact:
Woodburning stoves can be efficient sources of heat when operated correctly. Efficiency is influenced by factors such as the stove's design, fuel quality, and proper maintenance.
While wood is a renewable resource, the environmental impact of woodburning stoves depends on factors like the type of wood used, emissions control technology, and local regulations. Newer stoves with catalytic converters are often more environmentally friendly.
Installation and Safety:
Proper installation is critical to ensure safety and efficiency.Stoves must meet local building codes and regulations, including clearance from combustible materials.
Regular maintenance, including chimney cleaning, is essential to prevent creosote buildup and reduce the risk of chimney fires.
Heating Benefits:
Woodburning stoves provide a reliable source of heat, even during power outages, making them popular in areas with harsh winters.
They can also add a cozy and rustic ambiance to a home, with the sight and sound of crackling wood.
Maintenance and Cleaning:
To maintain optimal performance, woodburning stoves require regular cleaning and inspections. This includes cleaning the ash pan and removing creosote buildup from the chimney.
It's important to use dry, seasoned wood to prevent excessive creosote formation and ensure efficient burning.
In summary, woodburning stoves are effective heating appliances that can add warmth and character to homes. Proper installation, maintenance, and responsible wood-burning practices are essential for safety, efficiency, and minimizing environmental impact.

User questions & answers
Question: | How much does this weigh? Also, if i'm just camping and want it outdoors, how many pipes should be attached |
Answer: | Certainly if done correctly, it burns smoke free. Top-Notch little stove !!! |
Question: | Can this be installed in an RV |
Answer: | Winnerwell makes a Flashing Kit and a Double Wall Pipe Section to seal up and protect the exit point of your shelter. The spark arrestor on the Nomad stove does have a cap to prevent snow and rain from going down the flue. |
Question: | is a roof jack and chimney cap available |
Answer: | Yes, the damper is included. |
Question: | Does this come with a pipe that has the flu damper in it? It shows it does in the picture, however it is also sold as an accessory soooo |
Answer: | There are 6 sections of pipe (2.5" diam) that each add 11 1/4" of height. The insulated first section is the same length. Then there is a top cap that is about 4" to it's peak. Also, the first section goes into a segment of pipe welded to the top of the stove that adds one more inch. So in total from the stove top surface it is 67 1/2 + 4 + 1 = 72 1/2" or 68 1/2" to where the top cap starts. I don't think there is an easy way to add a blower, but I don't you'll need one as the entire front door can slide open if you want. There are four closeable vent holes on the front door when the door is fully shut. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size is the flue pipe and can I get elbows for it |
Answer: | The description says 2 3/4" |
Question: | would i be able to use this lightly in a colemen 14x10 feet tent |
Answer: | No, yes you will have to burn off the cheap paint first before you ever use this on a camping trip. Then paint it with the high temperature paint for barbecue grills. You can get from Lowes or Home Depot. But back to the tent itself, the material itself is only fire resistant and could start to melt or catch fire especially if it has been sprayed with a water proofing spray. And I would guess this tent doesn't have a stove jack in the roof either. |
Question: | Alaska is part of the United states. Why when I try to order does it say no international shipping |
Answer: | Unless you are paying Air Mail, it's going over the Canadian Border, which is an international border. |
Question: | I cant ship to canada why is that |
Answer: | Princess Auto has the same stove for less roomies and ships to Canada |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have Vire Mini Stove |
Answer: | We do have Mini VIRE Stove. It will be available on Amazon in about two weeks |
Question: | how do you clean ashes building up during cooking? If you are cooking for any length of time it looks like will choke the fire |
Answer: | Yeah, unfortunately, ash buildup is inherent to all woodfired devices. Having used my Vire extensively this past Summer, I simply let the fire die down, removed my pan/pot from atop the Vire & (w/gloved hands) carefully grasped the Vire by its legs & carefully shook out the ash... then relit the fire & returned to cooking. The ash issue I exp from prolonged cooking was pretty quick/easy to deal with. On a side note, next Summer I plan on fashioning a reverse shovel/scoop from a cheap metal spatula, which should allow me to drag out excess ash vs having to stop & empty the Vire! |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | The product developed in Israel. We are sourcing raw material from different supplies but it produced here in Israel. |
Question: | Any plans for a titanium version |
Answer: | That's a great idea... a titanium Vire would be awesome. I would totally support a titanium version via Kickstarter in a heartbeat, long as special pricing was passed onto supporters/CURRENT Vire owners!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | So is this the Titan (big one) or is this the original smaller stove |
Answer: | The Titan is the middle size. The Campfire is the big size. |
Question: | I just received this stove. Very nice. I purchased it for emergencies, primarily. Would it be okay to burn wood pellets |
Answer: | You can cut a circle of expanded metal or small mesh hardware cloth to fit to the top of the grate. Then the pellets will not fall through. 3oo grams of pellets will fit the burner, but if you dump them all in at once the fire will take a little longer to start but then will produce a much more intense fire than normal. It will work, but not as well as using the normal twigs or wood chunks. |
Question: | Is this stove and pot's, aluminum or stainless steel |
Answer: | Yep I agree with everything Ted C said (especially the dawn liquid - saves you from having sticky black pots for the remainder of your trip, until you get to some power tools :)Aluminum should definitely not be used above the Solo Stove if that's how you use them. I was easily able to obtain temperatures using nothing but hardwood coals and wind that were well in excess of Aluminum annealing point. I even got the CharBroil Stainless grill (portable) to glow bright red at the center of the heat. Basically the stove works so well that it is quite possible to achieve temperatures that are not exactly cooking safe with the wrong metals (particularly zinc and Aluminum and maybe anything with Teflon.) |
Question: | Is this considred an open fire which could be restriicted in some areas vs a fuel stove |
Answer: | Yes, this is technically an open fire. It's permissible in restricted fire areas that allow "contained" fires, such as barbecues or fire rings. Local regulations should always be consulted for areas with restrictions. This stove uses wood fuel, therefore sparks can leave the top of the combustion area. |
