User questions & answers

Question: Can the flame feature be turned off for use at night in a bedroom (so the room stays dark
Answer: Yes, the moving flame feature can be turned off. The logs maintain a very slight glow, that does not disrupt sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night. It's awesome.
Question: What kind of functionality does the remote have? Does it have a timer to turn on
Answer: The remote has four function buttons: power; flame setting; temperature; timer. The flame height can be adjusted from 1 to 5; level 1 is lighted embers, level 1 is a low flame, etc. The temperature can be set in increments of 2 degress from 62F to 82F. The remote will allow you to see what the temperature is set at, but you have to adjust it manually from the control panel. The timer can be set to turn the unit off, but not on. It starts at 30 minutes and increases in hourly intervals from 1 hour to 9 hours. Unlike the temperature, the timer can be set with the remote. Your local hardware store might have a timer you could attach to it to turn it on automatically. I don't know that for a fact, but I don't see why it wouldn't operate similarly to any other electrical appliance that can be used with a timer.
Question: How much does it cost per hour to run
Answer: It's a very good and responsible question, and yes, there is a way to answer it. It requires you check your electric bill and so some math, but you really only have to do this once. You're going to calculate how much you pay per kilowatt hour (kWh) which really is just how much it costs to run any electrical item in your home for each 1,000 watts. STEP 1: Find your most recent electric bill, look for any charges that are based on killowatt hours (kWh). For example... I live in NYC, and my probably outrageous bill had (Supply @9.1811 cents per kWh) + (Delivery @12.0324 cents per kWh) + (Clean Energy Benefit @ 0.6811 per kWh). I also note that Sales Tax is 4.5% and write all these down. STEP 2: Add them all up then apply sales tax. So for my bill, I get (9.1811) + (12.0324) + (0.6811) = 21.8946 cents per kWh. To factor in the Sales Tax of 4.5%, I calculate (21.8946) * (1.045) = 22.87986 cents per kWh. I round this up to 23 cents to make it easy, so that means it costs me 23 cents per hour to run a 1,000 watt appliance. STEP 3: Multiply your hourly cost by this appliance's wattage. The details indicate this is heater is 120 Volts at 12.5 Amps. To calculate watts is just (volts) * (amps). So (120 volts) * (12.5 amps) = **1,500 watts**. NOTE: this is very typical for major appliances such as air conditioners, space heaters and even running a clothes iron. With that in hand, multiply the kWh cost from STEP 2 by the wattage of this heater. So for me, since it costs me 23 cents per kWh to run something, that means at 1,500 watts it would cost me (23 cents * 1.5) = 34.5 cents to run this heater every hour. Yes, I rounded up a bit earlier (my real cost is 34.31979), but I like to overestimate just a little to play it safe. STEP 4: Multiply your cost to run this hourly by how many hours you might run it. This is where it gets very controversial because I think most people do not understand their own energy costs or usage and get a shock (no pun intended) from their electric bill. Let's say I run this heater 6 hours per day in a 30 day month. That's 180 hours * 34.5 cents per kWh = $62.10 just to run this one heater. STEP 5: Think about how you're heating your home. Remember that 1,500 watts is VERY common for major appliances as noted above, and other smaller heaters might be around the same, or possibly 1,000 watts. Let's say you're a family with a space heater in each room to keep people warm. Let's imagine those space heaters were 1,000 watts each. That means at 3,000 watts, you'd be paying DOUBLE in electrical costs instead of just having the family huddle together near this large heater in the living room. Summary: Do some due diligence and check your electric bill charges per kWh, then check the wattage of each heating appliance and do some simple math according to many electrical appliances you are running to heat your home. This exercise seriously shouldn't take too long to do, and you can use this same method to understand what it costs for air conditioning in the summer, and even how much it costs to run giant flat screen TVs or computers. Though for those panels it's far less... my 55" flat screen TV runs at 250 watts max, and my computer about 300 watts with monitor, computer and max gaming settings. Heating and air conditioning are what crush your electric bill, so do this and you'll see how valuable it is to have one large machine doing heating/cooling for a large area rather than multiple individual ones. PS: I haven't even bought this yet, but I wanted to help educate the person who asked the question, because this is a VERY important thing that so many people don't do, and I don't like seeing people throw money away. IMO, this is a very good purchase just for saving on electrical costs.
Question: is it noisy
Answer: Yes the machine is noisy. When the heat is on there is a low drone which isn't bad and is to be expected. The noise from the heater isnt the problem. It's when the flames and heater are on but the heat kicks off bc the room is at the desired temperature. At this point the flames make a very loud and annoying sound. If you lower the flames to the lowest setting this noise too will go away.

Infrared Advantages

Like standing in the rays of the sun, infrared technology produces heat that warms you instantly, even as it heats a large area. Plus, infrared heat helps you create a healthier home environment because its gentle heat maintains natural humidity in the air, rather than drying air out, so your family’s skin and airways don’t dry out either. Infrared heating also reduces static electricity, unlike traditional heaters.

Zone Heating Saves You Money

Zone Heating is a simple way to save money. In many homes, certain rooms, like bedrooms, dens, and basements, are unused much of the day, and don’t need to be as warm at those times. With zone heating, you can use electric heat to warm up the rooms you’re using, and shut off heated air blown in different sections, or zones, so unoccupied space isn’t heated. Turning down your thermostat by 10 – 15 degrees for 8 hours a day can bring you significant savings.*

User questions & answers

Question: Is the flame realistic? Also, can I put the heater on carpeting
Answer: My red Duraflame is in my living room. I've gotten comments from visitors to my house about how realistic the fireplace looks. I think it makes the room look cozy. Can you tell the flames are fake? Of course, but they look as real as any faux fireplace that I've seen (and I've owned five different electric fireplaces). I have a black Duraflame fireplace that's been in my three-season sunroom for about six years now, and it's on carpet. So yes, you can put the heater on carpeting.
Question: How can I purchase remote separately ? I lost mine
Answer: Try calling Duraflame at 1-888-674-7517 and ask if they will send you a another remote. The part number is P136. Good luck!!
Question: Do the sides/front get very hot? I have a 8 month old and want to know if it would be safe with her crawling around
Answer: No, the surface doesn't get hot. That's one of the reasons I bought it. I think it would be safe for an 8 month old, even if he/she pulled themselves up on it. It seems to be very sturdy with a low center of gravity, but I'm not sure I would totally trust a toddler to not pull it over.
Question: Does this unit contain a thermostat. That is, will it shut itself off when the room temperature reaches a specific temp, and will it turn back on
Answer: YES THIS UNIT HAS A THERMOSTAT, USE A WALL THERMOMETER AND THE KNOB ON THE LEFT SET TEMPERATURE .Turn the left KNOB fully counter clockwise, then turn the KNOB clockwise in 1/4 turn increments, stopping each time to allow room temperature to stabilize, check WALL THERMOMETER until desired temperature is reached. Leave the KNOB where it is and every time the Heater is turned on it will heat your room to the desired temperature set previously.

Front of heater must be at least four(4) feet away from any flammable items. Go to Home depot and get a pistol grip style Infrared thermometer with a laser that measures accurate heat on all objects. Also, keep heater intake rear filter clean. Expect your electric bill to go UP.

User questions & answers

Question: is it safe for a newborn? I want to keep my room at a constant temperature and want to make sure it is safe
Answer: no
Question: Does this heater have an air filter
Answer: If you still have the remote, press it to set timer and then press again to take it off timer. Same thing can be done on the unit itself.
Question: Can you put something on top, or would it get too hot? It looks like it would have a big footprint otherwise
Answer: another customer said that it she had to pay for shipping AND a 20 "restocking fee" ....
Question: How much does it cost to run 24/7 for 30 days
Answer: It would depend on certain things: Location, amount of space to heat, and at what temperature you intend to keep the space heated. I have a well-insulated cabin in Maine. It is 400 square feet - 200 upstairs, 200 downstairs. These heaters work well together (one on each floor) to maintain the temperature at around 72 degrees. This was also done quite easily with outside temperatures at -2 F and windy. I have not had them long enough to figure out how efficient/cost effective they are.

Question: What us the chord length
Answer: About 5ft
Question: Where are battery operated heaters for home
Answer: Buy a Tesla power-wall, plug a heater into it. It'll run for 20 hours on a charge and it only costs you $13,000 to buy and have the battery installed, and about $200 a month to recharge it with enough power to run it for another 20 hours. Or, just buy one of these and pay only $100 a month to run it full blast, off wall power.
Question: I have a tower heater that I can set a timer for it to turn off after a certain amount of time. Does this have that feature
Answer: Robert has the same setup I do. Build-in timers on a heater actually limit its usefulness unless you can bypass the timer when suitable. I have a heater with a build-in timer (my first-ever heater) and I no longer use it except in very limited situations. This heater is fantastic as its thermostat is very useful and easy. This system is in my greenhouse as a back-up if my other system fails and the temps drop below 40F.
Question: How do I set the thermostat
Answer: Turn the dial on the top of it. Usually once the room is warm enough I turn it back until it shuts off.

User questions & answers

Question: can you mount this on a wall or something
Answer: The heater does not have any mounting holes. The internal fan, which is quite a good size (and VERY quite), draws in air from the back through an approx. 5" round vent. With this in mind, the fan could be placed on a small wall hanging shelf (that would allow the rear fan vent to draw in air without obstruction; given that the back of the heater would have at least 2-3 inches of clearance). It would be very "do-able" and very easy to construct. In my opinion, using wood as material should not create any safety concerns, as the ENTIRE plastic housing is not even warm when the unit is on. Great question and idea!
Question: does it start automatically at night if I set the temperature before I go to sleep
Answer: There is a knob/dial on the right side that should turn the unit on/off so the room stays at a set temperature, but it does not work the way it is supposed to. The room will be too hot before it shuts off and too cold before it starts up again. I definitely do not advise leaving it running when you go to sleep.
Question: will this automatically shut off, if it over heats or if it's tipped over? thanks
Answer: Mine tipped over and kept oscillating and full heat face down into my purse on the floor. It melted everything in there....my glasses, credit cards, lipsticks, etc. I am glad that I woke up. There was no auto shut off, alarm or reduced heat.
Question: How much did this heater increase your electricity bill
Answer: I actually DECREASED my monthly electricity bill for my two-bedroom apartment by over $50 by using this heater, coupled with a timer to shut the heater off when I don't need it running.

User questions & answers

Question: An you use extension cord
Answer: The wattage is 1500w, you should be able to use any extension cord you would use with a 1500w hair dryer. Because you will be using it for a much longer period of time than a hair dryer you may want to consider an extension cord of 14 gauge run the unit with full power for 15+ minutes and see if the cord gets hot. If it does go to a 12 gauge cord. Remember it uses very little power when used with the flame and sound, it uses the 1500 when you turn on the heat portion.
Question: How many btu's is it
Answer: I’m not sure about BTU’s but it is 120VAC, 12.5 Amps and 1500 Watts
Question: Can it be used free standing if you don’t have a fireplace
Answer: I wouldn't try it. It needs to be on a VERY SAFE spot for the heater. Away from drapes, furniture, etc.
Question: What is the difference between this unit and the duraflame electric dfi030aru with the same specs, aside from the sound
Answer: Aside from what the other person stated I believe another difference is that this one has heat regulation whereas the other one does not, however, both appear to have regulation of the flames.

User questions & answers

Question: is there a thermostat
Answer: This heater was purchased for our telephone receptionist is always cold. She LOVES IT! She was more concerned about her upper body than her legs, so she sat it right on top of the desk beside her. The heater is Super quiet (she is on the phone constantly), plus it puts off really good controllable heat. We HIGHLY recommend this heater.
Question: Is there a burning plastic smell? I tried a moda flame product and my eyes and nose were burning by nighttime
Answer: Yes, it appeArs to be able to distribute just cool air. There is a temperature guide that can regulate the temperature. Also, it is very quiet and turns itself off if toppled.
Question: where are the controls? i want to put in our fireplace so want controls to be in front not on top or back
Answer: No this unit does not glow orange or light up other than the indicator light on the top of the unit.
Question: Is it radiant heat for the forced hot air kind
Answer: I own one each of the 10-inch and of the 16-inch heater units. The 16-inch unit has an easily removable, without screws, cover on the back to access the air filter for cleaning. The 10 inch unit looks like it would require screw removal to access the air filter. They both have the same heating capacity rating, 750Wats low (setting-1), and 1500Watts high (setting-2) settings. I find that the 750Watt low-setting on either heater is sufficient to heat the room each is in, a bathroom and a bedroom. A third setting is for fan-only, no heat. They each have a switch on the back to control the oscillation motion. They each have a tip-over safety switch on the bottom incase the heater falls over. I am very pleased with both of the heating units performance and styling.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it normal for the plug to be hot
Answer: I noticed mine was getting really hot. The instructions says not to use and extension cord but I HAD to so I ended up getting a heavy duty appliance extension cord. The plug only gets warm now, not super hot like before. Even if you’re not using an extension cord and gets hot make sure it’s plugged into a GFI outlet and that will solve the problem.
Question: I know that infered heats a bigger room and gets hot faster, is there a difference otherwise? Pros and cons of each please. I don't know what infered
Answer: From my understanding, infrared is 40% more efficient and heats faster (covering more sf as a result). However, the heat is direct and thus dissipates just as fast. Conventional heats the air unlike infrared and is supposed to last longer after the heater is off. Conventional also dehumidifies as a result. Not sure the extent to which all that is true with this specific product... I have the conventional one but not this one so can't compare.
Question: Does this insert make a crackling sound
Answer: This model does not make a crackling sound.
Question: what side does the power cord come out on if your facing the fireplace
Answer: it comes out the back. the unit is a superb heating unit.

Year Round Ambiance

As the outdoor air temperature changes, you can enjoy the relaxing quality of the dancing flames and glowing ember bed of a fire year-round without getting too warm. A great addition to your decor, this log set creates a stylish atmosphere no matter the season when you use the flame effect even without heat.
