User questions & answers

Question: if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought
Answer: I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater.
Question: I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know
Answer: The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place.
Question: Would this heater work in a 2 car garage
Answer: In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet.
Question: Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time
Answer: It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on.
Question: I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this
Answer: You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts
Question: Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower
Answer: The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT
Question: Will this work with a 20 pound tank
Answer: Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety
Question: So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work
Answer: It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual.

Radiant Vent Free Heaters

Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the difference between the red one and the grey one besides the $10 price difference
Answer: I got a grey one over a year ago and the manual in it just showed "MH18B" model to hint everything is the same between them except color. Many are saying new ones have no fan where my only guess as to getting one with vs without would be the ones with 500+ reviews are "older" ones with fans, while newer ones have under 100 reviews so far. Otherwise they show the same model etc as if attempting to make it cheaper but hide the lack in features.
Question: Can you used this in a vehicle for a temporary
Answer: Yes you can, I use it when camping in my VW camper bus. I crack the front windows a little and I have slept with it on low all night in my bus in -10 degree weather. Heats the bus up super fast and makes changing your clothes a pleasure when warm
Question: Does this one have the fan
Answer: I doubt it. Since Oct last year Mr Heater quit adding fans to these heaters. I ordered one just before Christmas (but the listing with over 500 reviews) and that listing said in the description "Includes fan" and "Needs 4 D batteries". The one I got sent did have the fan. I'm assuming this listing is totally new and the description leaves that out, so I'd not expect it. I'm expecting the older listing to go away or be edited soon to show units with fans are not available (although they may have some left in stock for now).
Question: How long do the small propane tanks on the sides last for on average
Answer: two 1lb bottles will give you around 3 to 12 hours of heat (depending on what setting it’s on), whereas the two 20lb propane tanks last for 50 to 220 hours (again depending on the setting). http://tacticalintelligence.net/blog/mr-heater-big-buddy.htm I love mine kept us warm at 7k' 14 degrees F in a tent trailer

User questions & answers

Question: How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room
Answer: Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames.
Question: Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat
Answer: This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application.
Question: Does this product have built in regulator
Answer: You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting.
Question: Will this burn in high elevation
Answer: Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently.

Question: Does it have a blower
Answer: The blower is not included. You can purchase the blower separately.
Question: Does it come with a warranty
Answer: Yes..it should have the warranty information down in the description/information section where you are looking at this particular item.
Question: How well does the thermostat work? Would like to leave this unit on in the garage and maintain a set temperature
Answer: Thermostat works well. It's not a set temperature thermostat though. You pick a number or in between spot that feels comfortable and leave it. I never leave it on overnight though.
Question: What are the pros and cons of infrared verses convection nat. gas heaters
Answer: Infrared is much warmer to me. We ordered 3 heaters before we found this one. It is the BEST and worth every penny that we paid for it. It heats quickly and evenly. I will never own another brand of heater.

User questions & answers

Question: Prod descrip states this model has a built in silent electric ignition, but one of the cust comments indicates it's a standard piezo. Which is it
Answer: This unit has a push button ignition. Clicks and lights. Globaltowne is an Authorized Mr. Heater distributor.
Question: When using this heater with a 20 lb tank, do i need a regulator on that tank and hose
Answer: No, using a hose like the F273704 will go to the "disposable tank" port and that expects high pressure gas (just as from the small tanks). The "Big Buddy" models have a Quick Disconnect port that takes in low pressure gas (and needs a regulator like the F281703 hose assembly), but not this or the Buddy MH9B models. I even tried running regulated gas into the Buddy heater, but it would stay like on "low" even though I put it on "high" showing not enough gas flow. So anything with a "disposable tank" connection expects high pressure gas (no regulators).
Question: When I put the heater setting on low, it sputters and makes a lot of noise, is this normal, but works fine on high. Thanks
Answer: Mine does the same. However, I found if I just adjust the temp selector just a little above low, slightly increasing the flow of gas but nothing like the high setting, the noise goes away. I literally shot a 6 point buck at 30 yards with the heater running like that this year.
Question: which hoses can you use to connect 20 lb. tank
Answer: The F273704 can be used alone. Many other hoses from mr heater (like F273701, F273702, F273703) and others can work that go to the "disposable tank" connection, but you'll need to add the "filter" with those others (item F273699). The reason for the filter is to catch oils that get "squeezed" out of most rubbers in hoses where the oils mess up the heater, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to not need it. Those are the choices for this model.
Question: Can the 2 heating heads be rotated and if so, independently of each other
Answer: They can be rotated independently
Question: do you need electric to ignite
Answer: You do need thumbs, but no electricity.
Question: The burners light but switch off after i release the safety shut off valve plunger, no matter how long i keep it pushed in. it should stay lit
Answer: Not sure if you have your problem fixed yet. But I had the same problem awhile back. I pushed the sensor probe closer to the heat element. I was too far away to stay heated and keep the unit on.
Question: How long does a normal supermarket propane tank last with this unit
Answer: That depends first I have no idea what a "Supermarket propane Tank" is, if it is a standard 20lb propane tank which you see on every gas grill and on this illustration then I can answer that question. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, a 20 pound tank weighs 17 lbs empty and 37 lbs with 20 lbs of propane in it, a "full" 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it.Now we have to discuss this model of Mr. heater which has two burners, you can run it on one or both and you can set it for low medium or high which is many differentt total burn times, I will assume either one or both with no mixture of settings.Single burner approx. operating hr.: 52/Low 37/Med 30/HighBTU output: 8,000 12,000 14,000Double burner approx. operating hr.: 25/Low 18/Med 15/HighBTU output: 16,000 24,000 28,000

User questions & answers

Question: It warns against using in elevations higher than 4,500 FT. Have you had success at
Answer: Yes, there have been units with success over 4,500 ft, what this means is we aren't able to guarantee successful operation of these heaters are higher than 4,500 ft.
Question: How many hours or days will it run with a 20# bottle
Answer: I recently insulated a 14’ x 20‘ workshop attachment on my garage. I got this heater and before I bought a big tank I tried it on a 10 pound tank from my grill. It was set on number one setting the temperature outside was in the 30s and I got 64 hours out of it holding just over 60°. So I figure a 20 pound bottle should last me little over five days. So I’m going to get a 30 pound bottle that way I only have to refill about once a week. Warmer weather less often, I hope this helps.
Question: It dont tell the dimensions? Is it 20" wide
Answer: The dimensions for the heater are 23 3/4" W x 11 1/4" D x 27" H.
Question: Can u use propane tank from a grill and how long would it last
Answer: Quick math says about 17 hrs on full tank. This heater has a high and low output, controlled by the thermostat, not the user. One gallon propane would last approx 4 hours. A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.5 gallons.
Question: how long does it last on a small propane tank
Answer: The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack.
Question: Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it
Answer: As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix.
Question: Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on
Answer: Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer
Question: how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle
Answer: A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this hook up to my natural gas system or is it just for use with 20 gallon tank you buy
Answer: Not for natural gas. hook up to LP, any size tank. ours is hooked up to outside 100 # tank.
Question: Can the fan be used if mounted on wall
Answer: Yes. I have mine standing on the floor but it came with the hardware for wall mounting. The hardware included spacers so the fan will be able to breathe. However, the fan does require to be plugged in so you need to mount close to an outlet. The heater itself has a battery ignitor so it can be used during power outages.
Question: Is anything else required for use with this heater? How does the propane hook up to it
Answer: You will need to buy a hose and regulator to hook up to a propane tank. You will also need some adapter fittings for the gas line since the fitting on the heater is a 3/8 NPT and the typical hose has 3/8 Flare fitting. You can get a universal Gas hook up kit that has all the adapters plus a shut off valve. The shut off valve is critical if it will be hard lined into a gas system instead of off a separate tank
Question: Does it have legs to set on the floor
Answer: Yes, you have to attach them - very simple and only 4 screws. Very pleased with the Heater though I added a blower and the auto temp switch functions improperly.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the thermostat allow you to set the air temperature so thst the unit comes on automatically whenever the ambient air gets colder
Answer: Yes but not exactly. You cannot set a specific temperature. The lowest setting is about 60 degrees and each subsequent number is about 5 degrees warmer. The last setting keeps the unit on continuously.
Question: I need a replacement for my bathroom heater and need to know the size of this heater and can it be used to replace a vented one
Answer: 23.8 x 11.2 x 27 inches Yes, it could replace a vented one, although it doesn't require a vent according to the design. But in all reality they do because they are oxygen hogs and small spaces are not optimal for it to breathe and you'd basically have to leave that existing vent open and even then it might rob the room of oxygen. I wouldn't use in a bathroom, if vented worked I'd get the same thing.
Question: does the unit emit a lot of heat from the back ? I am concerned about mounting the unit on the vinyl siding inside the enclosed front porch
Answer: The back of the unit is not the problem, it's fine. It's the heat coming out the vents on the top front...we do have our heater mounted on our vinyl siding on the back porch. When the flames are on, the siding above the heater does get hot, not the sides or the back. The first time we were enjoying our "heated" porch after having the heater installed by a professional I noticed the siding looked funny...felt it, yup, it was hot, hot to the touch...great, now what....the heater is installed....we solved the problem by using a fan. We mounted a small fan off to the side above the heater facing the wall so it blows the "heated air" coming out of the vents away from the wall....not the correct way I'm sure but it took care of the problem without having to take the heater out. The heater is not on when no one is on the porch. Had we known before installing the heater we would have taken steps to put up a fire barrier of some sorts that would work correctly from the start....or perhaps mounting it further away from the wall than ours is set, which is about 3/4 to inch away....the heat goes right up the wall....on our other porch we have a heater also but it is on legs and sit about 6-8 inches away from the wall and there is no problem with the wall heating up. I hope this helps.
Question: Can mr. heater provide me with an accurate ppm reading for this heater? accurate carbon monoxide meters: senorcon or pyle
Answer: No. I installed a separate CO monitor on the opposite wall about 15 feet away from the heater as instructions recommended. Readings have remained at zero.
