11 best gas heater for garage

A gas heater for a garage is a heating appliance that uses natural gas as a fuel source to provide warmth and temperature control within a garage space. These heaters are specifically designed for use in garages and workshops, offering an efficient and reliable heating solution. Here's what you need to know about gas heaters for garages:

  1. Natural Gas as Fuel:

    • Gas heaters for garages are typically designed to be connected to a natural gas supply. This ensures a continuous and cost-effective fuel source, making them an efficient heating option.
  2. Types of Gas Heaters for Garages:

    • Radiant Gas Heaters: Radiant heaters use infrared technology to heat objects and surfaces directly in their line of sight. They provide quick, focused heat and are suitable for spot heating in specific areas of the garage.

    • Forced-Air Gas Heaters: Forced-air heaters use a fan to distribute warm air throughout the garage space. They are more effective at heating larger areas and are commonly used for general heating purposes.

  3. Heating Capacity:

    • Gas heaters for garages come in various sizes and heating capacities measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). It's essential to choose a heater with the appropriate BTU rating to adequately heat your garage space.
  4. Safety Features:

    • Modern gas heaters for garages are equipped with safety features such as automatic shut-off mechanisms for flame failure or overheating. These features help ensure safe operation.
  5. Ventilation:

    • Adequate ventilation is crucial when using gas heaters in a garage to prevent the buildup of combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide. Many heaters require proper venting to the outdoors, so it's essential to follow installation guidelines and local building codes.
  6. Installation:

    • Proper installation is critical for the safe and efficient operation of a gas heater in your garage. It's recommended to hire a professional technician to install the heater and connect it to the gas supply.
  7. Thermostat Control:

    • Some gas heaters for garages come with thermostat controls, allowing you to set and maintain your desired temperature level automatically. This feature can help you achieve consistent comfort.
  8. Cost Efficiency:

    • Natural gas is often more cost-efficient than other heating options, such as electricity or propane, making gas heaters a cost-effective choice for heating your garage.
  9. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance is necessary to keep your gas heater running smoothly. This may include cleaning the unit, checking for gas leaks, and scheduling annual inspections by a professional technician.
  10. Local Regulations:

    • Be aware of local regulations and codes governing the installation and use of gas heaters in your area. Compliance with these regulations is essential for safety and legality.

Gas heaters for garages are a practical solution for maintaining a comfortable and usable space in colder months. When selecting a gas heater, consider factors such as the size of your garage, heating capacity, safety features, and proper installation to ensure efficient and safe operation.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this unit be installed through a cut out in the celing so it points down towards the floor while having the majority of the unit in the attic
Answer: Highly unlikely. The louvers on the front that direct air flow have maybe 45 degrees of downward angle. This just seems like a bad idea
Question: does it smell when running
Answer: not after initial burn period .Very quiet compared to my last heater ,does not smell .
Question: Can it run on a propane tank for a gas grill
Answer: This heater can run on a gas grill propane tank. Make sure the propane conversation kit has been installed and then you'll need to use a grill hose that has the regulator on it. Then you'll have to change the fitting after the regulator.
Question: One description says heats 700 sq ft another says 1250. Which is it
Answer: It heats my 900 sq. ft garage nicely.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be converted to run on lp gas ? and if so what do i need to do so
Answer: It has 5 settings.
Question: Does this heater have electronic ignition
Answer: As Dan mentioned your home should already be regulated at the gas meter which gets regulated before your home. One good way to check - if you have a natural gas stove or boiler check to see if they are piped directly from your home piping gas line or does it go through a regulator then into your appliance. Most homes in the US are set up this way. This is something that can be done rather easy you should be able to connect it yourself. However if your unsure or don’t feel comfortable than you should seek the help of someone that can.
Question: I installed this unit and the small screen above the heating area getting very hot and is melting a bit in a few places. Is this supposed to happen
Answer: I can't find one. They operate on normal home gas pressure which sources say is 1/4--60 psi. I have the Blue Grass Living (blue flame) 10,000 btu heater. It operates to perfection, and it burns so cleanly! If you ever lose electrical power, these heaters will keep right on heating!! A lot of words here; hope they help....
Question: Can this heater be hooked up to a on/off switch
Answer: It is thermostatically controlled. However you could not connect your Nest thermostat up to it. The thermostatic controls will be done via the Knob on top.

User questions & answers

Question: if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought
Answer: I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater.
Question: I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know
Answer: The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place.
Question: Would this heater work in a 2 car garage
Answer: In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet.
Question: Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time
Answer: It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on.
Question: I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this
Answer: You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts
Question: Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower
Answer: The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT
Question: Will this work with a 20 pound tank
Answer: Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety
Question: So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work
Answer: It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual.

Radiant Vent Free Heaters

Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this one have a thermostat n blower
Answer: Yes a blower and a thermostat.
Question: I would like to use this at a cabin that is at 10,750 feet above sea level. Most appliances have to be ported differently. Will it work
Answer: Yes but the mfg discusses elevation in the paperwork that comes with unit. I would call them
Question: The specs do not list a blower. blower is mentioned is in the q&a section only. does it really have a blower? if so, why isn't it in the specs
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry. A passive non forced air blower is available with all our vent free heaters 20K or larger. It is a purchase ad on.
Question: How long is the blower power cord
Answer: About 5 feet
Question: Where do i buy natural gas for it
Answer: You tap into an existing gas line
Question: sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage
Answer: I believe that it would. I have it in a 200 sq ft room with 13 ft ceilings, the house is 118 yrs old w/no insulation and it works very well. I do have the bigger size in another room.It has 3 burners instead of 2 and you can turn on 1,2 or all 3. It heats 2 rooms I have.
Question: Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings
Answer: The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat.
Question: How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide
Answer: The fumes are not vented. Natural gas is mostly H₂, gasoline is about 50% carbon, coal is all carbon. So being mostly H₂, the combustion products are mostly H₂O with a little CO₂, not unlike what we breath out. Coal and gasoline will asphyxiate you fairly quickly because of the high carbon content, which must be vented outside.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does pilot turn off after thermostat turns on
Answer: This could be the result of a partially blocked pilot tube, but further diagnosing may be required, please feel free to call us directly at 1-800-251-0001.
Question: Are there any issues/adjustments for installing at an altitude of
Answer: Yes I would think so. Please review the manual.
Question: What parts/size are required to attach to a Natural gas stub out
Answer: Regarding parts, I used a reducer elbow then attached a flex pipe to this (approx 18" in length). Regarding size, I used 1/2" piping from my basement to the heater which is attached to my ceiling in my attached garage. You have to be careful what size pipe you use. The longer the distance from the source the larger the pipe you'll need. Hope this helps.
Question: Can you mount it to tilt/angle out and or to the side or is it locked at a 90d strait down
Answer: I put an angle finder on my heater and it registered about 40 degrees. It is fixed mount but you could probably bend it some. I use mine in a 40 by 22 attached garage and set the thermostat at 45 degrees. It keeps the snow melted off the vehicles does not run all the time. Great heater.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for heating a 9x20' garage with the door open in the winter (nj)? how loud if we are sitting in the garage in chairs? fan force
Answer: Hi, Honda specifies the Rancher is 84.6 inches long, so you will want the Medium for a perfect fit on ATV's up to 85 inches.
Question: So it needs to be plugged in AND hooked up to propane
Answer: I bought a medium for my Grizzly 700 and it completely covers it down to the wheels, however I don't like to trap moisture or provide a home for mice so I use the elastic to tighten at mid wheel level. They seem to run large. Yours depends on the height of the windshield. I would expect that a large would be more than enough for a 570, maybe even a medium depending on how far you want to cover. I only cover mine in the winter between snow plowing so I don't have to spend time clearing the snow off it.
Question: How long will a 20 lb full tank last
Answer: You should verify the ATV dimensions with the sizing chart on the listing, but we recommend a Medium for your 500 sportsman.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this ul or csa rated
Answer: They slip in and off easily. They have a good grip too, but nothing that requires one to sit down to remove.
Question: Okay,I see the high is 13000 btus and seems to run at about 1 gallon an hour. But what does it run btus at minimum and how many pounds per hour
Answer: Definitely a 9. I bought a pair in size 9 for my friend and she wears 8.5 in ladies and they fit her great. We notice the sloggers run 1/2 size smaller than normal.
Question: How long is hose? Comes ready to connect to standard 20lb tank
Answer: The back of the shoe is 2.5" tall (measured on the outside of the shoe, including the heel and the small lip/rim).
Question: Does this work with small propane bottles, or just large tanks
Answer: Must be the inside. I wear a size 10.5 and they fit comfortably. If that was an inside measurement they would probably be tight.

Question: Does it have a blower
Answer: The blower is not included. You can purchase the blower separately.
Question: Does it come with a warranty
Answer: Yes..it should have the warranty information down in the description/information section where you are looking at this particular item.
Question: How well does the thermostat work? Would like to leave this unit on in the garage and maintain a set temperature
Answer: Thermostat works well. It's not a set temperature thermostat though. You pick a number or in between spot that feels comfortable and leave it. I never leave it on overnight though.
Question: What are the pros and cons of infrared verses convection nat. gas heaters
Answer: Infrared is much warmer to me. We ordered 3 heaters before we found this one. It is the BEST and worth every penny that we paid for it. It heats quickly and evenly. I will never own another brand of heater.

Product features
