User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions |
Answer: | It's not meant to be vented. As a precaution, I've kept a CO2 monitor in the room with ours and it's never registered any trace whatsoever. But, from it's use, the room does get humid sometimes. Here in NJ, we use ours to heat a 20x30 room that is probably 70% windows (including an array of skylights in the ceiling). Works really well. We've never had to turn it up high. The only problem, in that particular room, has been condensation on the windows from the moisture in the air the heater produces. That room was originally designed with electric baseboard heat, but I think we've saved a bundle when we've used this little the gas heater instead. |
Question: | Anyone had a problem with the unit flame not fully lighting from pilot? Like the flame is barely bouncing off of the bar and not fully lit |
Answer: | No essential oil is food grade unless it’s labelled as such. But they’re also not regulated by fda in most cases. |
Question: | thermostat |
Answer: | Only the manufacturer would know if each batch is tested as it varies batch to batch |
Question: | Can this be vented |
Answer: | Unless you absolutely know what you are doing, no essential oils are food grade despite what major MLM companies like Doterra and young living say. Europe has a few brands that are good enough to use internally because their regulation is stricter than the USA. Many here in USA are diluted with oil or alcohol. |

User questions & answers
Question: | if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought |
Answer: | I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater. |
Question: | I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know |
Answer: | The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place. |
Question: | Would this heater work in a 2 car garage |
Answer: | In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet. |
Question: | Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time |
Answer: | It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on. |
Question: | I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this |
Answer: | You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts |
Question: | Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower |
Answer: | The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT |
Question: | Will this work with a 20 pound tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety |
Question: | So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work |
Answer: | It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual. |

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one have a thermostat n blower |
Answer: | Yes a blower and a thermostat. |
Question: | I would like to use this at a cabin that is at 10,750 feet above sea level. Most appliances have to be ported differently. Will it work |
Answer: | Yes but the mfg discusses elevation in the paperwork that comes with unit. I would call them |
Question: | The specs do not list a blower. blower is mentioned is in the q&a section only. does it really have a blower? if so, why isn't it in the specs |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. A passive non forced air blower is available with all our vent free heaters 20K or larger. It is a purchase ad on. |
Question: | How long is the blower power cord |
Answer: | About 5 feet |
Question: | Where do i buy natural gas for it |
Answer: | You tap into an existing gas line |
Question: | sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage |
Answer: | I believe that it would. I have it in a 200 sq ft room with 13 ft ceilings, the house is 118 yrs old w/no insulation and it works very well. I do have the bigger size in another room.It has 3 burners instead of 2 and you can turn on 1,2 or all 3. It heats 2 rooms I have. |
Question: | Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings |
Answer: | The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat. |
Question: | How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide |
Answer: | The fumes are not vented. Natural gas is mostly H₂, gasoline is about 50% carbon, coal is all carbon. So being mostly H₂, the combustion products are mostly H₂O with a little CO₂, not unlike what we breath out. Coal and gasoline will asphyxiate you fairly quickly because of the high carbon content, which must be vented outside. |

Question: | What are the pros and cons of infrared verses convection nat. gas heaters |

Question: | I ordered one of these but can't seem to find info on how it actually hooks up to the propane tank. Also, does it come with a tank |
Answer: | It does not include a tank. You can get a Mr Heater hose that is 3/8 npt on one end and a tank fitting on the other end. The inlet on the heater is 3/8 npt. |
Question: | Can this heater run with only the pilot flame on |
Answer: | It is self-contained and automatic. The pilot setting will keep only the pilot burning. In heating mode it will automatically turn on and off at the desired temperature. The optional fan is not required but does not need to be plugged in if installed. |
Question: | Does this have plate for built in fan |
Answer: | Yes. Also wired for the fan so it is thermostatically controlled. Fan sold seperately. |
Question: | How low can the thermostat be set? Can it keep a room just above freezing |
Answer: | I use it to supplement my forced air heat. I would imagine in a room that is prone to freezing with the unit on it's lowest setting it would cycle quite a bit. It definitely kicks out a lot of heat. |
Question: | How long will 20lb propaine last on lowest setting in insulated room |
Answer: | Say a 10' x 10' room; about 12 to 16 hours. You MUST have some fresh air coming into the room or the O2 depletion will shut the heater off. Propane need air to burn just like most flames. |
Question: | Is this safe in a 300 square foot cabin as the sole source of heat |
Answer: | This is very large for a room of that size. I would recommend the 20,000 BTU model. That is ASIN B01DPZ5B3. These are designed as supplemental heat but it could be used for your application. |
Question: | Does this product have built in regulator |
Answer: | You must use an external regulator. You need some other hardware if you are going to use it on the floor. Here is what you need: ASIN:B0002YPAFY Rectorseal 23631 1/4 Pint Brush Top T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant, ASIN:B0058DIGPU Anvil 8700137808, Steel Pipe Fitting, Nipple, 3/8" NPT Male x 4" Length, Black Finish, ASIN:B005R21QLS Mr. Heater 12-Feet Hose/Regulator Assembly, P.O.L. and Hand Wheel x 3/8-Inch Female Pipe Thread. If your heater did not include an elbow, get a 3/8" ASIN:B005C2U67I Anvil Malleable Iron Pipe Fitting, Class 150, 90 Degree Street Elbow, NPT Male x NPT Female, Black Finish. Put sealant on the outside threads only. Screw the elbow into the heater so that the opening faces the front of the heater. Screw the nipple into the elbow. Attach the feet that came with the heater. Screw the hose onto the nipple. Attach the other end of the hose to your propane tank. Check all connections with soapy water before lighting. |
Question: | Will this burn in high elevation |
Answer: | Yes as long as there is enough oxygen. Oxygen above 12000 feet altitude becomes thin and supports combustion less efficiently. |

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use gas station diesel with this heater |
Answer: | You are able to use diesel #2 with this unit. |
Question: | Can this heater be used indoors without venting when using diesel? I have seen mixed reviews on the odor when using diesel but more opinions are nice |
Answer: | I use one indoors in a 1900 ft2 shop. Mostly I use diesel fuel but ignition with straight diesel is problematic with this and most multi fuel units. Diesel actually burns hotter and cleaner (less smell) than kerosine. I mix about 3 gallons of diesel with 2 gallons of kerosine. It a hotter cleaner burn that costs a lot less than straight kerosine. |
Question: | Does this use a wick like smaller kerosene heaters do |
Answer: | No, totally different burner type. It uses a powered pump/burner assembly and blows heat out one end, brings in burner air from the other end. Called a "salamander" heater in the construction trades. Also is MUCH noisier than a wick type heater! |
Question: | How long does a fill tank last |
Answer: | About 6 hours. Takes a tank and a third to run a 9 hour day. |
